  1. Aw man! Sorry to hear this C-towns. Take care of yourself my friend.
  2. I'm available the 26th, 27th, or 28th.
  3. At loooooong last, The Manuel Play is in production and tickets are on sale! "Manuel is a play about Richard Manuel, the deeply talented and enigmatic piano player and vocalist from the acclaimed musical group THE BAND. This play is a lively and musical tale told from the point of view of Richard's last remaining brother Al who reflects back on thirty key years in his brother's turbulent and incredible life. In doing so, Al confronts his own feelings while facing formidable forces of nature and dark complexities of the human condition." The premiere set of performance for the play will take place at the end of this month in London Ontario. April 26-May 1, 2016 Grand Theatre "Hailed as "the light of THE BAND" by his good friend Eric Clapton, Richard Manuel had a voice that could melt hearts that was forged from another world. But so too was his sensitive spirit and this story by Glenn William Grainger chronicles the clash between the harsh external road of the musician's life and one man's profound inner longing for peace and acceptance." Directed by John Pacheco. Special musical consultant Terry Danko (brother of The Band's Rick Danko). http://www.grandtheatre.com/index.php?cID=1471 I'm gonna go. Anyone else in?
  4. The Manuel Play is starting to take shape. Based out of London Ontario, they are currently auditioning musicians for the play. If you know any singing drummers aged 18-30 I believe they are having a hard time filling the role of Levon (understandably--big shoes to fill). To learn more about the project and to get updates check out their new facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/manuel.play.14?fref=ts&ref=br_tf or the website: http://www.themanuelplay.com/
  5. Ha! Toooo funny NW! You're right, I'm getting a much warmer response from this contest than I did in Fergus...and that judge was a deadhead fercryinoutloud, how could I not have won?! Haha. Last day to vote for this round folks. I'll update all y'all on Saturday as to what happens. Thanks for all the support!
  6. We're down to the final two days of voting. Vote today, vote tomorrow and spread the word if you can. I'll find out on Saturday whether Hank makes the Top 10!
  7. Exciting news! Hat Trick Hank made the Top 50 songs!! This will be announced on tonight’s broadcast of Hockey Night in Canada. Thank you for your voting and helping me move forward in the Song Quest contest. The next round of voting begins today, with the goal of making the Top 10. Starting today at 4pmET you can vote once a day. music.cbc.ca/#/artists/Anne-Thomson Here are ways you can support the song in this contest: 1) Vote once per day, per internet device from today until Thursday Dec 19th. Some people asked me to remind them to vote daily; if you would like me to send you a daily reminder to vote just PM me your e-mail address. 2) Listen to the song once on every internet browser. If you have Chrome, Firefox, Safari and/or Explorer on one computer please play the song on each one. Play it once at work and once at home. The first time the song is played on every internet browser adds to the total number of plays (and each play counts as a vote). 3) Continue to spread the word: -Tell your music-loving and hockey-watching friends and colleagues! -Ask friends to share it, tweet it and post it! -Know someone on a hockey team? Ask them to send the link to players and fans! -Visiting a friend’s house? Use their computer and make the site their homepage. 4) Keep your fingers crossed for Hank! Thanks folks!
  8. There are only two days left in this voting period. Thanks for all the support so far folks; if you get a chance please vote each day between now and Wednesday at 11pm EST. http://music.cbc.ca/#/artists/Anne-Thomson Another way to log a vote is to listen to the song again but on a different internet browser (i.e., if you used Chrome the first time you listened, please listen to it using Safari, Explore, or Firefox). Each first-listen per browser counts as a vote. :content:
  9. Thanks for the encouragement folks! The voting period continues for another week and a half (until Dec 11th) so keep on voting once a day. And as for this... ...I'm not sure whether to say thanks or sorry!
  10. Good point Edge. It was refreshing that ya don't need to go through a lengthy registration process, divulging tons of personal info along the way. Ya just have to go to the site and click "Vote for this Artist". Easy-peasy!
  11. Calling all: Music lovers, CBC listeners, and hockey fans. So, I wrote a song about hockey. The song, Hat Trick Hank, has been entered into CBC's "Next Great Hockey Song" contest. The recording has more of a country sound than I would have liked but I gave up some creative control in exchange for a good quality recording. Anyway, you can listen to the song on the CBC website and you can vote for it. Online voting opened today and runs until Dec 11th; you can vote once per day, per internet devise, for the next two weeks. Surf on over to the CBC site, listen, and vote: http://music.cbc.ca/#/artists/Anne-Thomson Vote at work, Vote at home, Vote on your phone, Vote on your kids' phones ...you get the idea. Also, feel free to share it via e-mail, facebook, twitter, etc. The more listens, likes, playlist adds, and votes the song gets, the more likely it is to get noticed by one of the judges. Thanks Skanks! Anne
  12. I heard a lot of great music this summer and I’m sure I’m not the only one. Below are four of my summer music highlights; I’d love to hear about some of yours. 4. Being “in the pit†for Hold Steady at TURF. Now, I’ll admit that using the term “pit†is a bit of an exaggeration but being at the front amongst the diehards was not only fun but also nostalgic as I hadn't listened to that band in a few years. Side note: Speaking of TURF for a first-time event this was very well run (save one lack-of-washrooms issue on the last day). The lineup was great and it was refreshing to have no overlaps and no waiting for sets. The organizers are encouraging people to advocate for the continued use of Fort York as a music venue. The TURF website states: “If you had a great time and feel so inclined, we’re asking people to email Councillor Mike Layton (Councillor_layton@toronto.ca) to let him know how important events like TURF, which take place in downtown Toronto, are to the City of Toronto†I already e-mail councilor Layton and encourage all Canadian music-lovers to do so too. 3. Seeing Dylan at Toronto’s Americanarama. I’d seen him before but never with such good seats and never a show at which he was so coherent. I liked his performance, his band members, and the song selection. It was also my last night of a two-week run of live music before going overseas for vacation so I was in very very good spirits. 2. Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros’ set at Gentlemen of the Road in Simcoe. I’d heard this band’s radio hits and always enjoyed them but I’d never really listened to their catalogue. Leading up to the fest I started listening to them and dug their stuff but man-oh-man was I ever impressed with their live show. It was vaguely Flaming-Lips-y in its spectacularness (although there were no costumes, confetti cannons, or hamster balls). There are oodles of band members and they all contribute to the sound (unlike a many-member band like Camera Obscura where there are lots of people on stage but it sounds as though only three or four of them are actually making music). Four or five band members took turn on lead vocals and there was plenty of audience interaction. I wouldn’t drop out of life to follow this band but I sure dug their set. Side note #2: I was extremely impressed with how less-run this event was. There was lots to do on site and it seems they’d thought of everything in terms of logistics. 1. Ok, now my number one pick needs a disclaimer. I am not picking this to poke fun and I am not picking this out of irony or sarcasm. This really was to coolest musical thing I witnessed all summer… My number one is C-Town’s washboard solo at the Tottenham Bluegrass Festival. Yes, the very C-Towns that we all know and love. Yes the washboard. Now the draw of Tottenham, for those of you who have never been, is not the bands in the official lineup. The main draw is the world-class bluegrass jamming that occurs in the campground. Literally at all hours you can wander around and here people pickin’. We have essentially established an area for skanks & friends in the campground and we rapidly got the reputation for a) Playing until past dawn every night Playing songs that aren’t all bluegrass standards because there are so many fabulous song writers in the crowd (my personal favourite being Blurry). So here’s the scene. We’re hours into a late night jam and, as usual, in most songs a few pickers take a solo. C-Towns joined the jam playing percussive washboard for a few songs. Part way through a song someone, likely jokingly, asked C-Town if he’d like to solo and whoa-nelly did our boy ever rise to the occasion! He played a long, varied solo that exceeded everyone’s expectations and blew us all away. Anyone I saw my within the next few weeks likely heard about it b/c I could not stop talking about how awesome I thought it was and how lucky I felt to be there to witness it. Summer ends this weekend but fear not, Rocktober is just around the corner.
  13. Found your wig in the room....no brain in it though.
  14. A friend of mine Glenn Grainger is writing a play titled “Manuel†that documents the life of Richard Manuel. ---Richard Manuel. Born in Startford ON in 1943. Member of The Band. Took his own life in 1986.--- Glenn has been working with the Manuel family and a variety of musicians to ensure that he is creating an accurate depiction of Richard. The play isn’t ready yet (I’ll keep y’all posted on that) but for now Glenn has organized an AMAZING night of music: CELEBRATING THE BAND Friday Nov 25th, 2011 Concert, Dinner and Silent Auction Kitchener, ON Featuring Chuck Leavell (from The Stones), Royal Wood, The Sadies, The Steve Strongman Band, The Last Waltz Tribute Band and more being added to the lineup....Hosted by Alan Cross Tickets are pricey but proceeds go to two great causes: Canadian Mental Health Association, and Production of the play “Manual†Facebook More info & Tickets using PayPal at www.paddlesinaction.com Check this out and spread the word! If anyone wants to get in on a table together message me. Anne
  15. Congrats Blurry! And great lyrics; you are a fabulous song writer! Seems you've assembled quite the Ontario super-group too. Looking forward to the album.

    Fish & Bird

Fish & Bird fishandbird.ca This has been one of my new favs lately (new-to-me that is). This folky-fivesome from BC, who got its name from the Tom Waits tune, has great recordings and I've heard a variety of ppl rave about their live sound. And...lucky for us they are touring hard and heavy right now. A combo of venues and quasi-public house concerts. May 10 The Pearl CompanyHamilton, Ontario , CA May 11 The Albion HotelGuelph, CA May 12 Cameron HouseToronto, Ontario , CA May 13 The GildToronto, Ontario, CANADA May 14 House ConcertPeterborough, Ontario, CANADA May 15 L'Inspecteur ÉpingleMontréal, Québec, ...and that is just a snippet of the dates. They are going all the way out east and playing shows all the way back too. I plan to see 'em in Guelph on Wednesday. Unless of course any of you fine folks are looking for a pretty lady to accompany you to see Neil at Massey. But barring any Neil Young miracles I'll be Fishing & Birding.
  18. You said it bird! This band is a like a beautiful woman with a hot body that wears baggy clothes. Their records are lovely but when you get them live & in the flesh they are SMOKIN' HOT! I was telling my man that I was heading to Hamilton to see a folk band and came home talking about how much they ROCKED. A great night of music & dancing with some great pals. Hey OTTAWA...you've got two chances (Blacksheep and NAC) go see 'em!
  19. I'm also in the hoped-to-catch-'em-in-Guelph-but-missed-it boat. So....sounds like we all ought to go to Hamilton on Wednesday.
  20. I went to a cool water-related event last night. I heard three women from the Grassy Narrows res. speak about their experience with the blockade, fighting for trapping rights, and action on mercury poisoning. They are making a few other stops in southenr Ontario: freegrassy.org Happy water day!
