Lead by Tommy (son of DSO’s Rob Eaton Sr) on lead guitar, the band ran into some member troubles before the show even started. All but two members of the band were able to make it but as we’ve come to know in the Grateful Dead community, one person’s problems become everybody’s solution. With a plethora of talented musicians willing to help, a plan was quickly devised that saw Eaton Jr and bassist Rudy Kiburis joined on stage by Eaton’s dad, Rob Sr. on rhythm guitar and vocals, DSO’s Lisa MacKay on backup vocals, DSO’s Rob Barraco on keys and Barraco’s son, Rob Barraco Jr. on drums. The band lead the crowd along one of the musical highlights of the day with the band jamming ABB’s “Dreams” and Eaton Sr leading Marty Robin’s “Big Iron”. Talking with Eaton Jr after the show he agreed that sometimes, in the face of adversity, opportunity will arise, “It was my first time playing with my dad in a setting like this. It’s something I’ve always wanted. I’ve sat in with DSO a couple of times and played around the fire but nothing like this. It was really a special thing.” Jemimah Puddleduck came on next lead by Mark Karan (Ratdog). They were tight but somewhat forgettable. I thought there jams were mostly anti-climatic and lacked direction and drive. The highlight of the set was Dylan’s “Tonight I’ll Be Staying Here with You” starting off slow and bluesy and coming out a full-on rocker which in turn went into “Turn On Your Lovelight”. DSO’s Rob Barraco could be seen side stage holding his phone out and smiling ear-to-ear as the band breezed their way through the “Pig in a Pen” opener. Rowan plays a very calm, relaxed style of bluegrass. It’s almost like he’s on a horse trotting slowly through the desert, playing and singing all the while. The band ran through a number of old-time traditional tunes, some Rowan-penned favourites and 3 new songs from a new album the band has due out in a couple of months. Backed by Jody Stecher on mandolin and high-tenor vocals, Keith Little on banjo and vocals and Paul Knight on bass and vocals, the band got a huge roar from the crowd after playing “Family Demon” which will be featured on their new album. Rowan played his own “Land of Navajo” with a spacey guitar intro to start the song off, coloured with some choice mandolin notes from Seckler, and Little tapping out a percussive beat on his banjo. Other highlights from the set included, “Hobo Song”, “In the Pines”, “I’m Lost and I’ll Never Find My Way”, “Catfish Blues”, “Panama Red”, “Little Maggie” and Bill Monroe’s “I’m Blue, I’m Lonesome Too” with Stecher nailing the chorus. Being that this is a festival that pays tribute to the Grateful Dead and Jerry Garcia, I asked Rowan of his time with Garcia and what came to mind when he thought of him. “When I think of Jerry Garcia I think of his sense of encouragement. He was a very encouraging person. You never felt like you were doing something stupid musically. He would always want to bring it up to a level of confidence. His enthusiasm and confidence made everything blossom.” He added, “Jerry was just a totally friendly guy. You know, kind of mischievous. Always a mischievous grin. His eyebrows always going up and down, you know. He talked a lot with his eyebrows! (laughs)” New Riders of the Purple Sage were the last band of the night before DSO was to take the stage to finish the night off. And as usual they did not disappoint. The band came out with a roaring Rocky Road Blues. Tight and having fun, the band ran through a number of favourites that had the crowd movin’ ‘n shakin’ to each song and hootin’ ‘n hollerin’ for more after each selection. Other notables for the set were Portland Woman, Lonesome LA Cowboy, I Don’t Know You and Last Lonely Eagle. Buddy Cage’s pedal steel was ringing clear through the sky throughout the set and I believe could still be heard in the far off distance as the day of music came to a close. Dark Star Orchestra with Donna photo by: blueice313 Dark Star Orchestra finished the night off and came out swinging with an original setlist and a funky “Shakedown Street” opener. Feet were moving and sand was flying everywhere. There must have been 13,000lbs of happy energy danced into the ground that night. If a best song of the weekend can be picked the “Loser” they played that night may have been tied for top spot. Other memorables of the first set included, “Greatest Story Ever Told”, Donna Jean Godchaux joining DSO’s Lisa MacKay for stirring backup vocals on “Gomorrah”. The second set highlights included a sweet, “I’ll Take a Melody”, “Alligator > drums > space > Alligator” and a rockin’ “I Know You Rider” to close out the set. The band came out and delighted the crowd with a beautiful “Sing Me Back Home” to close out the night. I asked Donna Jean Godchaux after the show when she first heard DSO and what she thought of them. “I first heard of them in ’91. John Kadlecik (Further, formerly with DSO) called me and asked if I’d like to come watch and maybe sit in. I went and was blown away. We became fast friends. There’s no competition there, I love hearing Lisa sing my songs” Sunday come too fast but nonetheless there was still one more day to soak up the happy all around and take in the music that lied ahead. The day was scorching hot and we knew shade and hydration were our key words. Musically, the day started with the Donna Jean Band. Donna Jean and guitarist Jeff Mattson (also of DSO) shared lead on vocals while the band layed down the groove behind them. They played a tune unknown to me but one that had some of the prettiest harmonies and lyrics. A slow beautiful tune called, “Tomorrow is Forever”. Then, to the delight of the crowd they launched into a smokin’ “Franklin’s Tower”. And one of my favourites of the weekend, the band layed down a nice slow groove to The Beatles, “She Said”. Up next and, judging by the size of the crowd, one of the most anticipated acts of the weekend, was the Emmitt Nershi Band. They opened with Nershi’s “Black Clouds” that had most of the crowd singing along. Emmitt has a real sweet easy-to-listen to voice which is somehow complimented by Nershi’s rough yet adept vocals. They were joined on bass by flatpicking champion Tyler Grant and Andy Thorn on banjo (formerly of Larry Keel and Natural Bridge). The tunes were played as well as I’ve ever seen bluegrass played with each player listening to each other carefully and filling in the spaces nicely. The band has a new album out and, for the most part stuck to their new material, with Emmitt and Nershi trading off the lead vocal roll. The highlight of the set for me was when Larry Keel sat in for the final 4 songs with Keller Williams coming out to lead the final song “Rosalie McFall”. It’s impossible to put into words what happened on that stage but the Guinness Book of World Records should have been called for the biggest and most smiles in one place at one time and for the most notes played by 6 pickers on the same stage during one song. Emmiitt Nershi Band photo by: Blair Babcock Well the pickin’ was up and much to happiness of the crowd it continued with a set by Keller and the Keels. They have something really special happening with this 3-piece. Larry Keel and Keller Williams dance around each other with ease and distinction as Jenny Keel keeps a solid beat behind them. Due to what Keller described as a “walking pneumonia”, Keller took hold of the majority of the vocals for the night with Larry taking on one song, his own “Mountain Song”. Other highlights included, “Don’t Cuss that Fiddle”, “Crater in the Backyard” and “Get it While You Can”. I asked Keller why the band worked so well together and he said, “For me it’s the 3-piece. You know, that a lot of room to go musically without things filling up the space. I love banjos, dobros and fiddles – things like that - but the 3-piece we have, I really like that. And the harmonies, I really love that too.” After a short break, Keller kept the place movin’ with what was labeled “Keller’s dance set” with Nershi on guitar. I don’t know much of Keller’s material by name but I do know that the crowd was taking in every note. And looking out into the crowd, there was a rare and special event happening as they moved almost in synchronicity to the beat. Now time for Dark Star’s last show of the weekend which ended up being a show from 6/28/87 - Alpine Valley Music Theatre, East Troy, WI. They opened with a ruckus “Hell in a Bucket” then slowed things down with a moving “Sugaree”. Then time to pick things up again with “Me and My Uncle” followed by “Mexicali Blues”. “Althea” and “Bird Song” were other highlights of the set. The band finished the set off with “Jackstraw” and the whole crowd singing along as the band sang, “Leaving Texas, 4th day of July”. The set break featured one of the best fireworks shows I’ve ever seen with the sky doing its best impression of Joseph and the techincolour dreamcoat for what must have been 20 minutes. Making headway a couple hundred feet back to the stage, the crowd was treated to “Mississippi Half Step Todeloo” to open the second set. Other highlights included, “Man Smart, Woman Smarter”, “Morning Dew”, and to close the set a tasty, “Throwing Stones > Not Fade Away”. They encored with “Quinn the Eskimo” before owner/operator Evan Kelley coaxed them back out for a beautiful and stirring “Ripple”. The weekend was a great success with like-minded folks meeting to celebrate the music we hold so dear to our hearts. The event is a wonderful gift to the world and event organizer Evan Kelley deserves much congratulations for his vision and determination. The festival is well run with all the amenities at your disposal. The large crew Kelley has working for him is well organized and willing to help anybody in need. Donna Jean Godchaux summarized things nicely, “Evan’s goal was to re-create, as best he could, the time we had in the ‘60s, ‘70s and so on. He’s doing an outstanding job. It’s the most intimate of the festivals. I love coming here because it’s my family, my peeps.” Added Rob Eaton Sr., “This is our 11th year here. It’s pretty amazing. Hopefully we’ll keep going. This music is special to everybody. It’s timeless. We’re just passing it on to the next generation.”

It has been faithfully remastered and restored in beautiful 1080p for your viewing pleasure. Part II to follow...] Canada Day started off with the normal excitement one works up when one knows their next 4 days will be filled with the sounds dearest to our hearts. Sounds filled with warm tonality. Sounds that take you on a journey in and through time. Sounds of laughter and reminiscing. Sounds of new voices that become familiar and familiar voices that never grow old. Sounds that are home to some of us and, for others, sounds that are our home away from home. We arrived Grateful Fest (Nelson Ledges Quarry Park, Garrettsville, OH) on Thursday evening to a community of brothers and sisters bound together by the soundtrack of the of our lives – the Grateful Dead. As we approached the gates, the energy in the air was palpable. Even the tension from the ridiculous wait at the border melted away as an assembly of smiles, dreadlocks, patchwork pants and patchouli drifted by. We went and set up camp and enjoyed the shade provided by the surrounding trees and friendly faces. After a while we went for a walk down Shakedown Street. A number of vendors were set up with everything from engrained art to homemade clothing to paintings to beautifully handcrafted carvings to Dead-inspired tiling to music photographs to a build-your-own-hand-drum stand present. Shakedown sucked us into its vortex and when it spit us out we found ourselves directly in front of the main stage with the quarry and beach only a coupled hundred feet away and the second stage only a hundred feet or so behind us. A serene setting for a weekend of peace and harmony…….life seemed pretty good! If one was so inclined, floating in the quarry while taking in all the weekend’s festivities and music was an achievable goal! Though the music was scheduled for Fri, Sat and Sun, headliner Dark Star Orchestra provided earlybirds with what has become their traditional “soundcheck” set on Thursday (only $10 extra). The band seems to be quite relaxed and having fun in covering songs not normally in their repertoire – the music and the atmosphere were loose and it came across nicely. With their playbooks and lyrics on stage in front of them the band came out blazing with Mountain’s “Mississippi Queen”. Cat Steven’s “Peace Train” was a nice feature followed by the Travellin’ Wilbury’s “End of the Line”. Bassist Kevin Rosen then layed down some monster bass chords as they covered The Band’s “Evangeline” and keyboardist Rob Barraco said, “I’ve been waiting to play that song for 25 years” as the band finished up The Clash’s “Rock the Casbah”. Other notable songs from the set were Blues Image’s “Ride Captain Ride”, Little Feat’s “Skin it Back”, Buffalo Springfield’s “For What It’s Worth”, Neil Young’s “Mansion on the Hill”, Bachman-Turner Overdrive’s “Taking Care of Business”. The band came back out for an encore and treated the crowd to a first. They’d announced that they’d gotten together and done something they hadn’t done before which was make their own music. They’d written music to a song, sent it off to Robert Hunter who loved it and in turn wrote lyrics for it. What came of it was an energetic “Run Mary” played lived for the first time ever and finished off with the Dead’s “The Golden Road (To Unlimited Devotion)” that had everybody moving. Dark Star Orchestra Friday started off with Ohio’s “The Recipe”. The band had a nice groove revolving around a fiddle, guitar, bass, sax, percussion, drums and male/female vocal. A dedicated following sang happily along to old songs while taking in a couple of new compositions. Although there were moments of musical enlightenment, I thought they fell a little flat. After The Recipe was Moonalice who hit the musical jackpot for me. This was my first time seeing and hearing this band and they did not disappoint. Steeped in the rich musical senses of the Grateful Dead and Bob Dylan, they still managed to convey a unique sound. The songwriting was great – lyrically the words rang true and deep and were filled with stingingly potent messages. Guitarist Barry Sless‘s tone was filled with warmth while placing his notes perfectly along the roadmap to the soul. The jams were deep and spacey with drummer John Molo keeping the groove all the while. I felt like I was climbing a road with a cliff right beside me - trippy enough to look over the edge but comfortable in knowing we wouldn’t fall. The crowd took a lot of pleasure in seeing the musical talent and diversity in the band with the musicians often switching instruments with one another between songs. JGB came out and treated the crowd to a great set of music. With an underlying gospel feel to their set they still managed to fuse the sound with funky upbeat jams and slow emotional songs. Highlights included an unbelievable and (what seemed like a) never ending “Sittin’ Here in Limbo” and monster “Deal” to close out the set. Melvin Seals is the real deal on the organ holding out notes for what seems like eternity and backup vocalists Shirley Starks and Cheryl Rucker singing what may have been the sweetest harmonies of the weekend. Kimock, Melvin and Crazy Engine came on next and much to the enthusiasm of the crowd played many of Kimock’s original tunes including “Africa”. The set was dreamy and tight with a nice mellow groove. Kimock is a virtuoso on the guitar and had the crowd following his every move. It was nice to see Melvin Seals showcasing a different side to his playing than he does with JGB. In this outfit, Melvin’s spot wasn’t to sustain his sound over the music with the organ but find his spot filling and adding chops around Kimock’s playing. Some more music on the side stage by the Spikedrivers – then time again for Dark Star Orchestra. We got down the stage and were treated to what turned out to be a show from 9/28/76 – Onandoga County War Memorial – Syracuse, NY. Opening with Cold Rain and Snow, I turned to a friend and mentioned that as wonderful a day it was in terms of music (and it was!) when it all falls down, this is what it’s about. DSO play the Grateful Dead’s music and they play it with precision and clarity. It feels soooooo right! I hadn’t seen DSO without John Kadlecik and was a bit weary about how it would come across with Jeff Mattson (Donna Jean Band/Zen Tricksters) sitting in on lead guitar/vocals. Not because Jeff isn’t an accomplished musician and Deadhead himself but because Kadlecik played the part so well. I have to say my fears were quickly set aside as Mattson stepped into the role without missing a beat. His vocals had similar intonation to Jerry’s and his guitar playing had a similarity to Jerry’s phrasing mixed with his own style. Highlights for the night included Donna Jean coming out to sing with Lisa MacKay (sings the Donna Jean part in DSO), along with a great “Big River”, “Bertha”, “Friend of the Devil”, “Going Down the Road Feeling Bad”, “The Wheel” and an unbelievably emotional “Comes A Time”.
  3. June 10-13 marked the 2010 installment of (in my humble opinion) North America’s most comprehensive music and arts festival, Bonnaroo. In this lifetime, I’ve been fortunate enough to attend this festival six times and I hope to continue the tradition. Each year is worlds apart from the last. The success and longevity of Bonnaroo can be contributed to evolving nature of the festival. As music and fans grow and change so too does Bonnaroo. During a time many festivals are canceling their experience (10,000 Lakes, Langerado and others) Bonnaroo continues to deliver. According to USA Today this year’s festival saw attendance near 80,000, effectively putting to bed any rumors regarding crappy ticket sales. Okay, enough with the love letter, let’s get down to specifics. What’s New? This year marked the addition of yet another stage, Lunar Stage. Lunar is located between This Tent and the Other Tent, and offered an eclectic lineup, including World Cup shenanigans and world renowned DJs. Lunar Stage is an excellent addition to an already jam-packed experience. It is also the only organized all night party with events scheduled until 6 am every morning. Thursday Wednesday evening delivered crazy weather, torrential downpours and thunder storms. The weather effectively turned the farm into a mud puddle and wreaked havoc on Thursday morning entry resulting in exceptionally long lineups at most site entry points. I spoke to many fans who waited in line for more then eight hours, while we waited for less then one. These are the directions we followed. I suggest you follow them in the future. Please pass along to anyone righteous, avoid sharing with Douche Bags and Frat Boys. From Nashville Take I-24 to Exit 105. Turn right onto Route 41. Follow Route 41 toward Manchester for approximately 6.5 Turn left onto Route 55 and travel north approximately 1 mile. Cross over I-24 Turn right immediately after the I-24 interchange onto Ragsdale Road. Turn right from Ragsdale Road onto Bushy Branch Road. Follow signs to site. Thursday night felt like the first night of summer camp. The grounds pristine, fans pumped and ready to get the party started. All tents offering lineups including: The Dodos, The Temper Trap, Blitzen Trapper, Lotus, The XX, while the Comedy Tent hosted two sets of the Bonna-vetran Margaret Cho. Friday After a blurry inaugural evening patrons awoke to rediculosly hot weather and the official opening of Which and What Stages. Trombone Shorty delivered a solid set to an eager Friday noon hour crowd at Which Stage. The artist, who made several appearances as himself on HBO’s brilliant hit TV series Treme, brought his talent and sense of eternal optimism to the festival. During a press conference later that afternoon Trombone Shorty discussed the growing interest in New Orleans culture: “It is great that people are enjoying what we’ve been doing for a hundred years.” Like a second line after a NOLA funeral the music’s message is clear: forget the past, the future will never come, enjoy this moment. One O’clock Friday afternoon marked the much anticipated Conan O’Brien standup act. Die hard fans, with surprisingly nothing else to do, began lining up around 5 am to ensure access to the Comedy Theatre. Luckily for the rest of us the Lunar Stage hosted a live feed of the show. Conan’s act consisted of an array of special guests, mixed-media, bizarre musical numbers and a surprisingly honest assessment of self. Since disembarking from NBC Coco has grown a beard which he says makes him look like “Paul Bunyan with an eating disorder” or “the Brawny paper towel guy just before his bone-marrow transplant.” Other Friday highlights include The Gaslight Anthem bringing their New Jersey inspired style (think Springsteen not Jersey Shore) to Which Stage, Damian Marley and Nas tearing it up on What Stage, while The National, She and Him, Tenacious D, Steve Martin (yes THAT Steve Martin), Tori Amos Michael Franti, Les Claypool and others rounded out the afternoon. You know life is fantastic when your largest dilemma is trying to decide which rediculosly great acts to see and which to skip. 10:00 Friday evening the tents stood silent and all eyes were on What Stage as it played host to local boys made international superstars Kings of Leon. KOL are not new to Bonnaroo but they are the first band to work their way from small tents to a headlining spot on What Stage. Frontman Caleb Followill summed-up the significance of this experience as follows: “There are very, very, very few times when I’ve felt really proud of what we’ve accomplished. This is one of those times.” The Flaming LipsMidnight marked the beginning of the acid-inspired-carnival that is The Flaming Lips. The Lips started an hour long set composed of their own material, followed by a short intermission, and a second set of Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon (featuring Stardeath and White Dwarfs). In a press conference earlier that day Wayne Coyne eloquently summed-up the essence of Bonnaroo “If you are not giving into the festival experience. If you are not enjoying the ride and surrendering to the flow then you are effed for life.” Well put Mr. Coyne, well put. The rest of the evening saw Bonnarooians surrendering to the flow as they danced themselves clean to LCD Soundsystem, Kid Cudi, The Black Keys, Daryl Hall & Chromeo, B.O.B. and Galactic......... life is freaking fantastic! Saturday Saturday afternoon the Dead Weather effectively brought the real weather on What Stage. Torrential rains lasted for about half an hour, it was enough to cut the humidity and make the rest of the day even more enjoyable. Cruel scheduling conflicts forced fans to choose between the Dead Weather, Weezer, Jeff Beck, John Prine and Ozomatli. I managed to catch a little of each set, which was a bad move and definitely not recommended. 9:00 Saturday evening, all was set right in the world, as every man woman and child made their pilgrimage to What Stage to experience the wonder that is Stevie Wonder. This set was an open-invitation-party for the masses. Stevie’s genre-jumping style and mulit-generation-appeal created an atmosphere so unique and rare one could not help but surrender to the flow. One music legend, one sequence jumpsuit, thirteen band members and one helluva mass singalong were just a few elements contributing to the success of this set. The power of collective experience was alive and strong for Stevie and spilled over into Jay-Z’s spotlight. JayZJay-Z. What can I say? This set was so great even Stevie Wonder stuck around. The energy of artist and fans was electric. Mr. Z was an unstoppable force and even displayed signs of genuine enthusiasm to be preforming in front of a crowd 70,000 strong. At one point he pulled a lucky fan and had the entire audience sing Happy Birthday....... then pure elation caused her head to explode. Apres Jay-Z Patrons were faced with yet another round of difficult decision making, including Thievery Corporation, Clutch, Gwar and The Disco Biscuits....... I choose Toronto’s own Deadmau5. This set blew me away. Mau5 combines fresh beats with on helluva visual show involving a giant mouse head and many vibrant colours; the product is an experience so original you can’t help but feel like a part of it. Grandma always told me to beware of dead mice, where there’s one Deadmau5 there are bound to be 10,000 live mice........... which was the case for this show. One particularly involved group of fans brought their own professional grade Mau5 heads, a sign of devotion rarely seen for DJ set. Ottawa fans will have a chance to dance with the Mau5 on Canada Day for a free set apres dark on George Street. See you there!!! Sunday Sunday started with a ripping set from Vancouver’s own Japandroids. Despite a few equipment malfunctions the duo delivered a solid performance to a very responsive audience. They may have even won over a couple of famous fans as Against Me! watched from the wings. The afternoon was jammed packed with more decision-making as patrons chose between Calexico, John Butler Trio, Blues Traveler, John Fogerty and Kris Kristofferson, among many others. Late afternoon was punctuated by an extremely well-received and well-attended show by Bonnaroo veterans Ween. The eternally entertaining band treated their fans to an eclectic set, which included a cover of David Bowie’s ‘Let’s Dance.’ French band Phoenix closed Which Stage with a brilliant sunset performance. The audience was extremely involved as the band delivered a precise experience under the most beautiful sky of the festival. The set ended with two versions of their smash hit 1901, as lead singer Thomas Mars high-fived fans from the photo pit, climbed scaffolding and visited the soundboard. Dave Matthews BandSunday evening closed with a performance from multiyear headliners Dave Matthews Band. DMB treated their audience to a two and half hour long set, which included classics “Don’t Drink the Water” “Tripping Billies” and covers “Needle and the Damage Done” “All Along the Watchtower.” Although beautifully executed and technically sound, this set was lacking the passion and furry of Dave shows past. Next year DMV plan on taking a summer off which is probably a very good idea. The last note faded effectively marking the end of another successful Bonnaroo.
