Uncle thanks Lyle Lovett for rescue

KLEIN, Texas (AP) -- Lyle Lovett's uncle says he owes his life to the country singer, who came to his rescue when an enraged bull charged, knocked him to the ground and mauled him.

Lovett, 44, faces months of rehabilitation following surgery to repair a broken right leg he suffered when he slapped the bull away from his uncle, Calvin Klein, 67. "If it wouldn't have been for Lyle, I wouldn't be here talking to you," Klein said in Saturday's edition of the Houston Chronicle.

Lovett was recovering at his home in Klein after being discharged Saturday morning from Memorial Hermann Hospital.

Klein, no relation to the designer, escaped with severe bruises after the incident Wednesday on his farm in suburban Houston. The bull, called Cotton, was Lovett's pet.

Lovett ran over and slapped the bull with his cap, and the bull turned on him, chasing him to a fence. The bull pinned Lovett's leg against the rail and raked him over to a post, shattering his shin bone.

Lovett, a singer-songwriter who has won several Grammy Awards, graduated from Klein High School in 1975. (More on Lyle Lovett).

Anybody else see the glaring leap of logic in this article?

"The bull, called Cotton, was Lovett's pet."

"Lovett ran over and slapped the bull with his cap, and the bull turned on him"

Was Cotton some sort of *obedient* bull before he "turned" on Lovett? Did he sleep on Lyle's bed at nights or something?

I tell you, rich people should stick to drugs and gambling, and leave the exotic pets to that Crocodile Hunter guy.

Now, wait a minute. Lyle Lovett lives now where he was born and raised; on his grandfathers farm in Texas. His folks built a house on a corner of the plot of land and they still live there. Lyle bought his grandfathers farm when he passed on. No apartment in NYC, no house in California, just a purebred Texas country farm boy, who has spent more than a considerable time around cattle. He even still sings in his local church choir every Sunday he's not touring. Lyle is a stand up dude (no pun intended).

BTW, if you ever get a chance to see Lyle, go. One show and you'll become the fan I am.

Now don't get me wrong, I wasn't dissing Lyle the Artist. I was dissing the fact that Lyle the Artist slapped an enraged bull with a cap.

Of course in Lyle's defense, I have no idea what I would do if an enfuriated bull was mauling a relative of mine.

i love the guy and almost everything he does. i was actually looking around for an address where i could send a get well card to him. what a terrible thing to have his leg so crushed up.

btw velvet, came home and have been searching my husbands collection for his mr. bungle cds - i guess i should pay more attention to what he listens to cuz that stuff rocked. were you also the one responsible for the tom waits at the club too?

I'm not sure of the correct protocol for slapping a bull...but a motorcycle accident that forced him to cancel a tour a few years ago (maybe 6 or 7 years ago), marriage to Julia, and now this! Been a tough life for that cowboy.

If you do get a chance, do go see Lyle. The man is a class act!

ya, i recognized big time at the time, though i havent' seen the movie or heard that album in years, brought a big grin to my face, for some reason i was expecting to hear phish or something grin.gif" border="0

Lyle Lovett, ya, believe it or not, i discovered this guy from an appearance on the Tonight Show years ago (of all places to see an act for the first time) That performance was much more big-band-like singing "here i am" with a lady. I was so impressed i ran out for the album that week. Then from there i just kept buying, it's true he is all class. (i was sooo mad when the press was eating him during that julia marriage)

That's so funny h, I saw that Tonight Show performance! I remember it vividly; I was 14 with my nose inches from the screen and here was a funny looking guy singing over that jazz stuff, but it was good. When he said "Make it a cheeseburger" I completely lost it. My first experience with liking a kind of music that wasn't the usual. Unfortunately, I missed the point and didn't go buy the album. Luckily my ex reintruduced me by taking me to see Lyle at the NAC a few years ago. He is now one of my favourite songwriters ever.

Who keeps on loving you when you been cheating,

And spending your nights on the town?

And who keeps on saying that he still wants you

When you're through running around?

Who keeps on wanting you when you been lying,

And saying things that ain't what they seem?

Well, God does, but I don't.

God will but I won't,

and that's the difference between God and me.

Lyle is so nicely nasty.
