DAVE RAVE BIO

Dave Rave is a musician’s musician. To the general public, he’s the manic Teenage Head rhythm guitarist who graduated to lead singer and catapulted the band back into the charts; but musicians know him as a valued session player (Daniel Lanois, Andrew Loog Oldham, Alex Chilton, and countless others) who can play the best version of a song he’s never heard.

Dave began his music career in his high school years writing songs and performing driving acoustic rock and folk-pop in and around their native Hamilton. This evolved into the wildly popular, The Shakers, from 1979-1982 with Rick Andrews, Tim Gibbons and Claude DesRoches. They charted many singles with albums produced by Daniel Lanois (U2) and Jack Richardson (Guess Who, Alice Cooper). Their garage rockapunkabilly sound ignited the masses during their reign.

Following the break-up of The Shakers, Dave took over as lead singer of the already popular Teenage Head. Dave replaced Frankie Venom who incidentally had worked with Dave on several other projects including a band named Madonna. Dave Rave continued to take Teenage Head on an upward trajectory with radio friendly hits like “Can’t Stop Shakin’”. Dave left Teenage Head after a successful run to try things out on his own.

Often referred to as a Canadian Nick Lowe, Dave was the first North American artist to sign to Russia’s Melodiya record label and recorded Valentino’s Pirates in 1989 as The Dave Rave Group. They were originally known as the Dave Rave Conspiracy but this name was changed to appease cold war era Russian sensibilities. Press surrounding this release included a CBC documentary revisiting Russia with the group as well as 3 promotional videos that were in heavy rotation at Much Music in Canada. Some of the players on this album included Gary ‘Pig’ Gold, Coyote Shivers, Jack Pedler and Television’s Billy Ficca. Bullseye Records re-issued the album for the first time on CD in 2001 and the positive reviews continue to pour in.

BOB BRYDEN BIO

Bob Bryden was born in Ottawa, Ontario and was transplanted to Oshawa, Ontario where he was a member of such bands as The Outcasts and The Christopher Columbus Discovery of New Lands Band.

With much original material under his belt the Christopher Columbus band featuring Helge 'Rich' Richter and Lynda Squires became Reign Ghost who released an eponymous debut to no effect in 1968. In 1969 they recorded a second LP which was held back until 1970 and released simultaneously with the debut album of the band they mutated into - Christmas.

From 1970 to 1974 Christmas (later dubbed Spirit Of Christmas) saw Bryden writ and record two more incredible LP's - 'Heritage' and 'Lies To Live By'. Both of these albums were received very well by the critical community but were considered too eclectic even for Canadian FM radio. Spirit Of Chistmas disbanded in 1975.

In 1978 Bryden was offered the job of managing a franchise store of the Star records chain and headed up their independent record label as well. Through the label he was able to produce material for the likes of The Forgotten Rebels and Durango '95.

In 1981 Bryden returned to his own recordings and 'See This Brick', a self-produced solo LP, was released on his own Limited Availability label

Out of the broken pieces of The Brick came a new band called Benzene Jag. Together for over 4 years, the JAG released one highly controversial single, recorded a six-song EP and toured southern Ontario.

In 1985, Benzene Jag gave way to yet another band - the striking "progressive-Euro-pop" group, Age Of Mirrors. Singing and writing under the pseudonym Simon De Beaupre, Bryden released the 'Mirage' LP and found himself playlisted, incognito, on some of Toronto's major radio stations.

Reaction to the LP was unanimously good - but independent distribution slowed momentum. Meanwhile Bryden began taking his religion a little more seriously and ended up recording with a fellow church goer Belma Diana and together they released 'In One Spirit'

Age Of Mirrors went on to release a 2nd LP called 'Screenplay' in 1987 before Bryden decided to once again focus on his own material. Ten years after his first solo release Bryden released 'Theatre Like This'.

He has also supervised the CD re-issues of both Reign Ghost albums and two Christmas records by Laser's Edge in New Jersey and the release of a Christmas live album through Zapp Records in Hamilton.

Nice...see you there probably!

Hey Brian, if you get there early enough (10:30-11:30pm), you MUST see BOB BRYDEN INTRIGUE.

Bob Bryden is an amazing psychedelic music passioneer. So much catalogue, he could play for days on end. Great material. If you dig 60's psych akin to The Electric Prunes, The Sonics, The Pretty Things, Syd Barrett etc you'll love Bob Bryden.

Syd Barrett huh?

Hmmm,I have high regard for Barrett,if this guy is "akin" to the original madman, then I guess I could make the trip for that one, although I an extremely skeptical, guess I'll have to see for myself.

Benzene Jag,now thats a blast from the past!I used to have the EP,man I'm getting old.I remember them from my friends in Viewer Discretion & Instant Gothic, thats who got me into them.

Sounds interesting none the less.
