Jay Funk Dawg
ON DISC REVIEW - THE JIMMY SWIFT BAND from: http://www.eye.net/eye/issue/issue_01.20.05/music/ondisc.html THH JIMMY SWIFT BAND Rebirth of the Hooch Below Me/Maple The New Deal hit upon the perfect bridge between DJ culture and live bands by offering the extended dance-music sets of the former combined with the appeal of watching musicians interact and create songs as you hear them. Halifax's Jimmy Swift Band not only feature the same two-pronged attack, but throughout most of the live recording Hooch sounds nearly identical to the Deal's funky electro-disco marathons until switching gears halfway through for an alt-rock intermission with "Daisy." At 78 minutes, the experience wears a little thin on record, but with bands of this nature, albums are essentially a plastic aural flyer for their shows anyway and JSB make a good enough pitch with Hooch that you wouldn't be remiss seeing them live if cosmic dance jams are your bag. RYAN WATSON The Jimmy Swift Band play The El Mocambo (464 Spadina Av) Jan 22.
