co-op employment

Well, I am close to the end of my chef training program and I was hit with an blow in the fact that I did not get the job in Jasper, like I was so sure I would...

So I was wondering if anyone had any good funky/fine dine/ jazz bar etc....restaurant that they would recommend me applying to for my co-op. I do not want to work in an assembly line kitchen, I need to be working under someone who has their red seal and perhaps wants to apprentice me. If you could give me the names of some places that I could be in touch with that would be great. I am into going anywhere...relocation is not an issue....

I suggest you call my friend Chef John Cadieux at Monk's Grill in Whistler 1-604-932-9677. He is an incredible Chef with all the accreditations you could want, and I happen to know he is really disappointed with the staff he hired this year.

I think he'd be thrilled to hear from you, as there have not been enough newcomers to Whistler this year to fill the job void!

Tell him that "Corey" suggested you call him. (Then you're guaranteed to be considered loopy! hahahahaha)

Don't worry. Use my name. He'll talk to you. The worst he can do is turn you down, right?

Oh, and I don't know his email address. Calling would be better though; trust me.

dude...I just talked to the man...he seemed steller...and said that he could probably find me a place as long as I am not as sketchy as you...I presume he was joking. At any rate, I may be owing you the biggest hug ever for this...that is of course if he gives me a job....at any rate you have earned major good karma points on your good natured effort to help your fellow (wo)man.

That will be your hardest part about moving to this overpriced town. We do have provisions for that, though...

There's a quasi-governmental body here called The Whistler Housing Authority, which exists entirely to arrange for affordable housing in Whistler for workers. They have a whole bunch of restrictions on many properties, so that they can only be rented to people who work in Whistler, and at a reduced rent. Check them out at http://www.whistlerhousing.ca/

Also, if you're willing to live 25 minutes north of Whistler, the town of Pemberton is considerably more affordable. You may find some leads for living in Pemberton by going to www.piquenewsmagazine.com.

Otherwise, if you can find a roommate, by coincidence my firm has a two-bedroom condo for rent. It's a pretty good place. I lived there for a while. Money-wise, it's not the greatest deal in town, though, as far as staff-housing; as you could probably find something cheaper. It's also not the most expensive either, (and has the bonus of being really close to where I live!).

When are you thinking of coming out? Send me a Private Topic on this stuff, and I'll see what I can do for you when you're actually on your way.

(The good thing is that everyone in Whistler is similar to you; moving to town in winter and trying to make a go of it. It always comes together.)

Whistler is a CRAZY place to live- it was the first place that I lived when I left the nest in Ontario when I was 17 (in 1996) If you can swing it financially its great. I lived in Pemberton which was alot cheaper than the village and not to far if you drive, hitching around there is very easy and commonly done as well.

If Whistler and Monks doesn't work out you may wanna try The Eagles Eye in Golden, BC. It is a world renouned restaurant at the top of Kicking Horse- which is (IMHO) the best mountain to ride in BC, its still new enough that its not over crowded and the terrain is so raw, its truely amazing- Golden is a really nice, welcoming community to live in as well- tight knit. The Eagles Eye hyas 3 red seal chefs and the one in charge on hiring is Allen if you wanna call him up- you can also tell him that I (Adrienne) refered you-= I work at the hill and help out at the Eagles Eye when there are "functions" its a great place to work, the food is AMAZING. Its fine dining 5 star restaurant and has been rated the best place to eat by many astounded magazines etc.- mean its at the top of a world class ski hill- also its open year round (KH stays open in the summer for tourism, bikers and there is a grisly bear preserve. Check it out- www.kickinghorseresort.com/winter/

there is a link for the Eagles Eye on the KHMR website and links for Golden as well if your interested.

Another fine dining pretty renouned restaurant in Goden is the Kicking Horse Grill. The owner of this place are also great people- I have never eaten here because its very expensive but I know they have very acredited chefs and have difficulty finding employees to suit thier style. They also have a website that you can Google if ya want.

Good luck girl!

Much love & luck

Drie

I was up at the Eagles Eye today and they asked me to work because they are so short staffed.

Call them!!!

(250) 439-5400 then ask to be transfered to Eagles Eye Back of House and ask for Allen.

Good Luck!

The hill is stellar this year. I work at a mid mountain bar/cafe and since the hill isn't open to public until tmo i have been getting fresh lines all wqeek long... best job perk ever!

Much luck & love

Drie

and Golden is really a rockin' little town- last year Spearhead came and played a field party, this year Toot and the Mayalls. Very good shiznit!
