c-towns
What is the best way to take digital camera shots of bands in darker bars with out using the flash? I have a canon A520 Powershot with most of the bells and whistles. What mode and such, I'm a novice at cameras.thanks.
secondtube
have to turn the iso up, so you dont get blurry images, but have to keep the shutter open long enough to let light in....the dark bar without flash shots are the single toughest shots to do with a digital camera. guigsy
on the top dial put it to "SCN".use the directional key on the back to cycle through the modes.the 2 in there that i think would work are "night snapshot" and "fireworks" - the fireworks setting might be useful because the lighting is probably similar enough that the settings are likely programmed fairly accurately. night snapshot might have a flash function, so you may have to turn that off - i'd play around with those and see what ya get.one thing to be aware of, though, you're going to be limited to 400 ISO - i typically shoot band photos around 1600 ISO, sometimes down to 1000, sometimes up to 3200 (but rarely on that end).what does that mean? you're getting 4 times less light into the camera (compared to 1600), making it harder to grab shots without streaking or blurring - but it can be done.nice camera ya got there. guigsy
right - just to expand on what s'tube was driving at - if you set your camera to M on the top dial, you're in manual mode, then you can take your f-stop as low as possible (likely F3.5 or F4.5 w/ that camera), ramp up the iso to 400, and then adjust the shutter speed to an acceptable hand-holdable speed - which will probably yield varying results, and it's a little trickier, but its another way to really manipulate the camera to get the best possible results for that scenario. secondtube
ya, thats what i was trying to say. used my manual mode for my concert shots....but eventually gave up, realizing i'm trying to shoot under the single most difficult shooting conditions...i leave it up to pro's now, and just take shots of fish. Much easier. Edited January 14, 2006 by Guest

secondtube
remember, the brighter the stage lights, the easier the shots...so if your seeing a concert that has a lightshow, the best opportunities for shots is when the lights are bright...seems like an obvious concept, but figured id throw it out anyways...
