phishin4groove Posted June 24, 2003 Report Posted June 24, 2003 Wondering if I could get some suggestions of some covers that would be cool to do in the "jamband style".... Preferably easy chord progessions into a nice smooth single key long ass cosmic jam..... Any ideas???????? Tanks
kung Posted June 24, 2003 Report Posted June 24, 2003 As anyone will tell you I'm the king of this shit. Eminence Front is likely the sickest ass non-jam jam song by the Who of course. I heard of a band from Atlanta called Skydog Gypsy covering it first but the Mule have done it as well as recently as 12/30 or 31 of the past year. Ween has a bunch of gems along those lines: Flutes of the Chi or Tender Situation. Just listened to the studio version of the latter a few minutes ago and must have only listened to live versions as of late because it threw me a bit it was so slow. Listening to one of the Phish Japan soundchecks right now, probly 2000 and their just daintily butchering Live and Let Die. Then at some point they just give up on it, seemingly, then seem to just nail it- obviously not scripted as you can tell by their dinkering away and jokes over the vocal monitors. Let me think about this one a bit more and I'll get back but those are some goodies.
bradm Posted June 24, 2003 Report Posted June 24, 2003 I agree about "Eminence Front". I've always wanted to do a Eminence Front -> Elephant Talk* segue. Aloha, Brad * By King Crimson, one of the incarnations with Adrian Belew.
Jaimoe Posted June 24, 2003 Report Posted June 24, 2003 Any tune by Zappa. They can't be too hard to master eh? Seriously, here's a few: Powderfinger - Neil & Crazy Horse Cortez The Killer - impossible to play this song badly because the chords are perfect. Love Ain't For Keeping - The Who ( listen to the version on the remastered Odds & Sodds with Leslie West from Mountain if you need proof that this is a jam song) Young Man Blues - The Who ( doesn't get any better ) Born Under A Bad Sign - Albert King/Jimi Hendrix ( both versions will do nicely - Hendrix's is an instrumental from the Blues album ) Chunga's Revenge - Frank Zappa ( jams like no one's business ) Yer Blues - The Beatles I Want You ( She's So Heavy ) - The Beatles Marquee Moon - Television ( seek this song out and you won't be disappointed. One of my favourite jam songs and songs for that matter of all time )
secondtube Posted June 24, 2003 Report Posted June 24, 2003 quote: As anyone will tell you I'm the king of this shit. you sure you meant 'this' in that statement? rather than tell you what i'd like to hear covered (cause i love almost all songs), i'm going to list what songs DON'T need to be covered.... 1) All ALong the Watchtower (this should be obvious) 2) Franklins Tower (bands covering this make me puke) 3) Any rap song turned into a jamsong (gin and juice, etc) 4) Any Phish song. That is all
Tooly Posted June 24, 2003 Report Posted June 24, 2003 i think there is just one rap song that should be covered, and ive actually never heard anyone cover it. hits from the bong, nice fatty bassline, words that everyone can relate to, i mean come on, who doesnt want a hit from the bong id love to hear some zappa covers like dancin fool, i heart that tune. as for hendrix maybe some catfish blues, i dunno if its by jimi but i know its on jimi:blues and as for ween, i wanna hear someone cover bananas and blow, just a silly song but a great carribbean kinda beat. id like to hear someone cover some leo and mike or maybe best feeling by keller
Rob Not Bob Posted June 24, 2003 Report Posted June 24, 2003 For a tune I believe is fairly straightforward with room for a bad ass cosmic jam at the end, I suggest you check out the Dave Mason/Traffic song "Shouldn't Have Took More Than You Gave". It's on the first Dave Mason album (whose name I forget) and also a cool slightly jammed out version that Dave did on the live Traffic album , Back To The Canteen. I have long campaigned that Gov't Mule should do it (Warren would sound so amazing singing it), after their stellar cover of the other Dave Mason song on Back To The Canteen, "Sad And Deep As You". Rob Not Bob
Esau Posted June 24, 2003 Report Posted June 24, 2003 I'd say some Traffic tunes would be appropiate. Ami ~ Pure Prairie League(probally their best song)works into a great tune to drift away into a jam. And maybe some Flying Burrito Brothers.(definatley) My .02
dave-O Posted June 24, 2003 Report Posted June 24, 2003 Nobody seems to cover Traffic... well, except for The Dead I've wanted to do Medicated Goo in a band for years.
Esau Posted June 24, 2003 Report Posted June 24, 2003 Yeah I once jammed with these guys who were working on bringing "Glad" from John Barley Corn Must Die(my personal favourite song & album by Traffic) into the selections. Great song to jam to...as long as you got a keyboard/organ in the band. You could take that song in forty minute proporations as my friends did. What a song think I will dust the vinyl off and throw that album on.
Mr. Musicface Posted June 24, 2003 Report Posted June 24, 2003 quote: I've always wanted to do a Eminence Front -> Elephant Talk* segue. Oh man, that might possibily be the best thing EVER I don't think I could ever talk my band into this but man I'd love to hear that someday. Brad, if you're seriously ever gonna do this tell me and I'll drive to Ottawa or where ever. I'm serious! To me, a good jam song should have at least one really strong instrumental and/or vocal hook that you can come back to, and somewhere in the song that you could open things up. Some songs that I always thought would be good jam tunes 'cus they have the potential to jam in the middle or elsewhere in the form: Something In The Air - Thunderclap Newman (I'm pretty sure I've heard someone do a jammy version of this, can anyone confirm?) Out On The Tiles - Zep (take that outro groove and run with it for while, then maybe build back to an extra chorus afterward) Riverboat Fantasy - David Wilcox (a slightly cheesey song, but a fun groove with a sing-a-long chorus that's perfect at the end of the night once everyone is drunk off their ass) In Your Eyes - Peter Gabriel (this is just such a great song, there are a million ways you could do it - actually we might pull this out with Uncle Seth someday if we can ever get off our asses and come up with one arrangement we can all agree on!) It's Hard To Be A Saint In The City - Springsteen (check out the Live 75/85 version for some great ideas on a jammy middle for this, a great trading-off song) Also although everybody covers them there's a reason for it - Bob Dylan and Tom Waits songs are a goldmine, pick your favorites and go to town! Peace, Mr. M.
Mr. Musicface Posted June 24, 2003 Report Posted June 24, 2003 quote: Originally posted by dave-O: Nobody seems to cover Traffic... well, except for The Dead. Actually Uncle Seth has done Dear Mr. Fantasy regularly since our first gig. It's sort of a mix of the Dead and Big Sugar versions, fairly heavy. Some friends of mine used to do Low Spark which is a great song if you've got piano. You can solo over that all day. Esau, right on about Glad, I actually saw Windwood play that back in the 80s and it was killer. And I've always wanted to try Light Up Or Leave Me Alone, and yes I thought of it before I heard that Phish did it! - M.
Tooly Posted June 24, 2003 Report Posted June 24, 2003 ive heard phish and mule cover traffic, and a band that kicked my ass in chicago in some blues bar they were the steepwater blues band, probably got a website, and they fucking ROCK after a quick search its right here all i know is the guy plays slide like theres no tomorrow, one of the best slide players ive actually seen, and before they played LUOLMA they said they play this tune so often theyre startin to think its their own.....sometimes i feel, like im fadin awayy, yer lookin at me butive got nothin to say, man i love that song, the bands got a ranch in indiana ont he MI border, we lived up the street from them, hung out a few times, the guitarist was always hittin on my gf. anywho, if you see that their playin around, check it out. and cover more zappa and phish
paisley Posted June 24, 2003 Report Posted June 24, 2003 heard an eighties tune the other night I'd love to hear come out in the middle of a night of jam Men Without Hats - Safety Dance Ah we can dance if we want to, we can leave your friends behind Cause your friends don't dance and if they don't dance Well they're are no friends of mine I say, we can go where we want to, A place where they will never find And we can act like we come from out of this world Leave the real one far behind, and we can dance fun stuff
scottieking Posted June 24, 2003 Report Posted June 24, 2003 I've always thought a Canadian jamband should pull out a little "Running back to Saskatoon" I hear BIG keys, though. How's the formation of that band going here in London?
MarcO Posted June 24, 2003 Report Posted June 24, 2003 "I've always thought a Canadian jamband should pull out a little "Running back to Saskatoon" I hear BIG keys, though." Ha, BNB did that last itme I saw them in Brantford. It smoked! speaking of which, I haven't seen anyone disseminating this info from their website: Well.. it's been a long time coming... but we're set to begin working on a new studio CD this week. We plan to release our fourth recorded effort this Fall and follow with a full coast to coast tour... East to West and back again. It's been a while since we've been West and even longer since we've recorded... so you can understand we're all very excited. We'll be sure to keep you posted as things roll along and hopefully we'll be able to release some some "pre-release" treats online soon. See you all this Fall!
phishin4groove Posted June 24, 2003 Author Report Posted June 24, 2003 its going good actually, got a drummer, got a bassist and me on guitar,,, Just would like to get a man on keys, but can live without that for now... Thanks for asking
Rob Not Bob Posted June 24, 2003 Report Posted June 24, 2003 Actually , a few bands have covered Traffic, including Gov't Mule doing Low Spark Of High Heeled Boys and the aforementioned Sad And Deep As You (originally a Dave Mason song, but he also di it with Traffic), of course Phish doing Light Up And Leave Me Alone, and Big Sugar doing the hardy perennial Dear Mr. Fantasy, but yeah, I wish people would try more songs of theirs. Glad/Freedom Rider, Shootout At The Fantasy Factory and Pearly Queen, to name just a few, would be ideal for a, errr, Traffic Jam I love Zappa, but I figure a lot of his ideal jamming stuff might be a bit more complex than a lot of folks want to take on ... not to prejudge, but that was the response I got from the guitar player in my old band whenever I suggested playing some of his stuff (I am merely a vocalist and know little of such things). I have, however, heard The Fall cover I'm Not Satisfied, as well as a salute to Uncle Frank called I'm Frank ... now the Fall is a band I would love to hear cover Eminence Front, if only to hear Mark E. Smith snarl, "It's a put on!" Rob not Bob NP : 1965 - Afghan Whigs ... I can't believe how long I have neglected the genius of their last album
phishin4groove Posted June 25, 2003 Author Report Posted June 25, 2003 I agree that Franlins doesnt need to be covered anymore.. Except for Darkstar, they can cover it anyday... Zappa is definately a route I'd like to go... Preesh boys
bradm Posted June 25, 2003 Report Posted June 25, 2003 quote:Originally posted by Tooly: i think there is just one rap song that should be covered, and ive actually never heard anyone cover it. hits from the bong, nice fatty bassline, words that everyone can relate to, i mean come on, who doesnt want a hit from the bong A couple of the Open Jam tracks* at the JamHub (especially 2003-03-11.4) have bits of "Hits From The Bong" in them. In fact, that track (and other stuff, like "We Ain't Goin' Out Like That") usually gets broken out at some point on Jammer Tuesdaze at Cafe Dekcuf. Aloha, Brad * Note that you need to be a member (registration is free) of the JamHub to download tracks.
Tungsten Gruvsten Posted June 25, 2003 Report Posted June 25, 2003 hmmm i think a certain 3 piece instrumental band should do King Crimson - Red.... And I think that Drums and Tuba should cover Spring Heel Jack's 'Trouble and Luck' (amazing tune!!!) As for Zappa-i'm glad moe. has hit on my fave album - One Size Fits All....but I'm dying to hear a rendition of Orange County Lumber Truck/More Trouble Every Day a la Roxy and Elsewhere... Hmm other ones on my wish list... I always think of mid-90's indie bands like Trans Am and UI - some fun instrumental rock/synth fun there.... I highly recommend anything from UI's 'Sidelong' album..... D & T really reminds me of them(well without a tuba) 2 bass players, no guitar...some synth and very cool.... how about Start Choppin' or Yeah Right from Dinosaur Jr.... Maybe some Can - Oh Yeah, Live till you Die, Vitamin C.... Matthew Sweet - Divine Intervention...it rocks, it has the rising action.... 'You Know you're a Man' by Captain Beefheart....now that would certainly light up a few eyes...and it's got a rippin' guitar bit...even 'When I See a Mommy' also from Bat Chain Puller.... Oh and Bowie....2 tunes that would go off great-Unwashed and Somewhat Slightly Dazed has huge potential, maybe even Width of a Circle or She Shook me Cold for some more rawk style stuff...
Jaimoe Posted June 25, 2003 Report Posted June 25, 2003 Seriously phishin4groove, Do yourself and your band a favour and seek out Marquee Moon by Television. Cosmic jams don't get any better.
bradm Posted June 25, 2003 Report Posted June 25, 2003 I agree about needing more Zappa performed (RAQ does some; they're about the only band I've heard do Zappa), but the Zappa tune I'd like to hear is "Big Swifty". Check out the version on "You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore Vol. 1"; it starts normally, but then moves into a jam/groovefest, with George Duke just whippin' it out as he did with Zappa. Aloha, Brad
Jaimoe Posted June 25, 2003 Report Posted June 25, 2003 Also, Anything off of the great Yardbirds album Roger The Engineer ( featuring Jimmy Page & Jeff Beck ) - eg. Happenings Ten Years Ago, Psycho Daisies, Over, Under, Sideways, Down etc... Speaking of Beck, his first two albums, Truth and Beck Ola, should provide you with decades of jam cover material.
