c-towns Posted June 26, 2003 Report Posted June 26, 2003 I would have written about this show yesterday but I only got 3 hours of sleep and I couldn't speak english. All I can say is wow... Its been a while since I've worked up a sweat like that. Blue Quarter opened and they got me a serious sweat going, you guys back east (of Calgary) have to all go see these guys and they're new jams. I would recommend picking up their new disc as well. Antibalas was amazing, one of the best shows I have ever seen. I was not familiar with any of their songs but I danced like Jimmy Wilson when you give that boy a dime. Only issue was the amount of people they crammed into the venue, well it wasn't to bad for me, but the short girl beside me was feeling the crowdedness, I elbowed her in the face not once but three times, booo. I kept apologizing and she just kept reassuring me it was all right. After I made contact I would stop moving my arms and just dance with my lower body but the music kept getting a hold of me and making my arms flail. I would just like to take a second to apologize to anyone (especially the ladies) that I have came in contact with on the many dance floors I have been on. I'm sure I have have ran into a lot of you at some point not even nowing who the hell you are, yes I'm that guy. Anyway the show I was talking about was freekin amazing and if you haven't seen them, do it.
Im going home Donny Posted June 26, 2003 Report Posted June 26, 2003 ...oh sooo you're that guy! I've been hearing about Antibalas for awhile now......I won't miss 'em this time around

What a spaz!! That poor girl probably has two black eyes from you, you dance floor bully!
weezy Posted June 26, 2003 Report Posted June 26, 2003 I'm going to see them tonight. Can't wait. This year's jazzfest has been sick!
SolarGarlic Posted June 26, 2003 Report Posted June 26, 2003 I have to agree, that show was delicous!! I saw them at the same venue last year and the place was almost twice as full this time around. They recieved great revues last year and the peeps came out in full force. As much as I like seeing them at the Warehouse, I think they may have to change venues next year....maybe. I do like that feeling of being in the middle of a music driven frenzy!! I know for sure that they played at least two encores and that the crowd was beggin' for more still...everybody say "ya, ya".....
c-towns Posted June 26, 2003 Author Report Posted June 26, 2003 Ya, ya... I know they played three encores. You should talk Backbacon, everytime I see you on the floor there is no one within 6 ft of you, crazy shin kicker It must be all those years of drinking Chatham water...
backbacon Posted June 26, 2003 Report Posted June 26, 2003 quote: Originally posted by c-towns: You should talk Backbacon, everytime I see you on the floor there is no one within 6 ft of you, crazy shin kicker Pfft! Oh, and I've never drank Chatham water: well water> bottled water. Any other theories?
c-towns Posted June 26, 2003 Author Report Posted June 26, 2003 Maybe its something in the air there... Smells like wet bread and boiled hotdogs... But i'm sure olfactory fatigue has set in over the past few years, but not on these humid 40 degree days. Mmmmm, I don't miss that smell.
secondtube Posted June 27, 2003 Report Posted June 27, 2003 as i said after the first time i saw antibalas... i have never, under any circumstances, and under any drugs, danced harder than i did at the antibalas show early in the year... oh and i was sober....i honestly got the best workout ever....if i went on antibalas tour, i'd be the fittest, buffest, hippy ever...
tigger Posted June 27, 2003 Report Posted June 27, 2003 I'm going to see them at the Blues fest in Ottawa, can't wait.
c-towns Posted June 27, 2003 Author Report Posted June 27, 2003 True dat, I myself have never worked up such a sweat either and I was buzzed.
goldengrooves Posted June 27, 2003 Report Posted June 27, 2003 I've finally got a chance to sit down and talk shop here....the Antibalas show was sick! Those guys never stopped, they had that African beat going constantly and every band member just kept stepping up and wailing out a killer solo!! Sick, sick, sick! I kept expecting the "huh, ha's!" from a James Brown show, but instead you had these sweet melodies and some wicked chorous' from the band. Anyone who misses this show when they come to town will probably die from musical malnutrition! Blue Quarter put on a really good show too. C-Town....I was looking for you, but since I have no idea what ya look like, I couldn't find ya. We eneded up boogyin' at the back where it wasn't so crowded, but still FREAKIN' hot! Word of advice to y'all that plan to catch the show....get a cd early cause they sold out in Calgary.
