Solo Artists and Musical Wizards:Dave Lauzon, Marc Charron, Mike Sasso

[blurb]

In a time when so much sounds the same and every new artist is a replica of their influences, true creativity in music is rare. Even rarer are those embarking on a solo career, with the vision to explore new musical territory. On August 12th, Café Dekcuf will be indulging in a night of musical wizardry featuring solo artists, Mike Sasso, Marc Charron and Dave Lauzon.[/blurb]

Opening act, Mike Sasso is an eclectic folk musician and gifted guitarist. As one who normally chooses song writing and studio work over performing, this is a rare appearance and the opportunity to hear truly unique ideas.

Following Sasso will be popular singer-songwriter, Marc Charron. A vibrant and spontaneous musician Charron has successfully toured Canada and Australia, winning over new fans through his catchy songs and creative musicianship. Now the guitarist and vocals for Lure, Charron still thrives on the energy created between himself and the crowd during his solo performances.

Headlining act, Dave Lauzon, is a talented guitarist, sonic experimentalist and fearless improviser. Formerly the lead guitarist of nero, Dave Lauzon’s new solo work combines both electric and acoustic instrumental pieces in a jazz–rock blend, succinct and original percussion, swirling, melodic guitar riffs and the heady, ambient use of effects. As Lauzon moves from a touching acoustic piece to a soaring guitar solo then envelopes the room in layers of rocking percussion, the result is a dancing, expansive and emotional sound that is sure to capture your attention and imagination. You’ve never listened as closely, you’ve never danced as hard to just one guy.

What makes this night a unique experience is not only the talent, creativity and diversity of the three acts, but also the amazing fact that they each call Ottawa home.

Details: Doors open 8pm. Show 9pm Cover $7.

In. I'm looking forward to this one, not only for Dave, but for Marc Charron, as I've only seen him with Lure, and I know he has a whole thing (or set of things) going on outside of it. Mike Sasso has my interest piqued as well. It'll also be nice to see a show at Dekcuf again (it's been over a year since I've seen a show there).

Aloha,

Brad

yeah, this should be fun. What's the deal? Are these guys going to just go on alone or are we going to get a little jam treat? Either way, it should be fun if I can squeeze a nap in before show time (or even otherwise).

I'm bored at work and very tired and can't wait for some music...

Thanks Pablo that was sweet....sorry I couldn't stay the whole set.

Charron was a treat too. Missed Sasso unfortunately but did see Lake Lamies fireworks on my way while into town hearing Amy Millan cover Becks Jackass on Fuse...that was worth the venture out on its own. :)

oh and I heart Dekcuf. Lots more space in there now too.

Mike Sasso was great. He had a real 1970s vibe to his music, sort of a soulful singer-songwriter thing, along with some of the musical elements he used (I think I heard some Doobie Brothers tunes teased, but it was more musical similarity than a cover/tease). One thing I loved was the way he seemed to give himself totally over to the song, almost singing the way he did because he had to, moreso than because he wanted to. He did most of his tunes on guitar (and he can play really well), but did a couple on keyboards; his last keyboard tune had a break in it that, compared to the rest of the song, was flat-out alien. I hope he does more gigs, as I want to see him again.

Marc Charron blew me away. The highlight of his set for me was his almost tribal take on "Crazy Train"; it kind of reminded me of how I think Xavier Rudd might do it. He played guitar, and also operated a small bass/kick drums, a small snare drum, and a hi-hat with his feet. I'm really looking forward to Lure next weekend.

I think that may have been Lauzon's best (solo) show. How do I know this? Well, it was the longest (just under an hour and a half), so contains more Lauzon than any other Lauzon show. He debuted a new tune ("Echo The Hills", which clocked in at over 20 minutes), did some jamming out, and I think expanded his use of the guitar itself as a percussion instrument, which added a rhythmic drive I don't think I'd heard (or heard as much) before.

And all of that happened at Cafe Dekcuf. :)

Aloha,

Brad
