TheGoodRev
I'm headed to the Shoe tonight to see Rose Hill Drive and it occured to me that I can grab a ticket for Magnolia Electric Company while I'm there. They're playing next Tuesday Sept 12 at Lee's Palace. Anybody else into them/planning to go? I saw them in Toronto in March and they positively flattened me...pure Neil Young/Crazy Horse vibe. Jason Molina is the songwriter/singer/guitarist/driving force. He released an ungodly number of records under the name "Songs:Ohia" between 1996 and 2002, including a split EP with My Morning Jacket (on average, 2 albums and 2 7" singles each year). In 2003 he formed Magnolia Electric Company and they released their self-titled. They have since released three more (!) full-length records and an EP, and Molina has done two solo records and a 7" in the meantime. Holy shit, this guy makes a lot of music. For fans of roots-rock that ventures into sad bastard territory, like Neil Young and Crazy Horse, and newer acts like My Morning Jacket and Ryan Adams. Jaimoe
I'm a fan of both Songs: Ohia and Magnolia Electric Co., however, I just got back from my honeymoon and am a little strapped for cash. Any fan of moody dark folk and classic Crazy Horse with a dash of Gram Parsons should do themselves a favour and see Jason and Co.
