Guest Low Roller
So what exactly is an offer sheet?Apparently the Flyers gave one to some Canucks RFA, and the entire hockey world is going nuts over it?
bradm
According tohttp://www.google.ca/search?hl=en&q=define%3A+offer+sheet&btnG=Google+Search&meta=it'sA contract offer from another team signed by a RFA, Transition Player, of Franchise Player. The player's original team has seven days to match the offer and retain the player.http://www.steelergridiron.com/information/freeagents_definitions.htmlAloha,Brad

rubberdinghy
It'll force the Canucks to pay this Kesler dude more than he's worth...I guess it works on many levels...Vancouver will have less room to play with in thier cap, especially if they need to add that "extra" player, and they will also be required to offer him the same contract at the end of the year...If they don't match it, they get Phillies second round pick next year. It's sorta like paying Radek Bonk 2 mill a year. Guest Low Roller
Low Roller, stop watching hockey.I don't. Sod off you old git.So basically they just gave an RFA an offer of $1.9M? Is that it?Then what the fuck is TSN.ca saying that there hasn't been an offer sheet in years?

rubberdinghy
because there hasn't been...now that there is a cap, GM's can sorta fuck with each other...and we all know that Clarke likes to do that...Kinda like calling you all in poker, if the cap is your chip total and you only have 2 mill left...Fold...you get your blind (draft pick) call you'll have to put in your 2 mill and see if it was worth keeping that player. Booche
What this did was set the market for a player of Keslers ability to get 1.9 per season. Dont you see all those 'foaming at the mouths' agents now?I dont necessarily agree with your analogy Dinghy, but its still a fun one.

dave-O
Don't get the fuss over the Flyers giving RFA Keslar an offer sheet?? Well Roller, you certainly outed yourself as a casual hockey observer masquerading as a hardcore Habs fan this time!Let me put it this way - I was more shocked by this than the DiPietro 15 year contract!Bobby Clarke broke an unwritten rule among GMs. And good on him for doing it. There hasn't been a RFA offer sheet since the Avs and Wings had to match ridiculous offers for Sakic and Fedorov respectively in 97-98.Why not?1. Up until this new CBA, the compensation for signing someone else's RFA was a mystery and could be up to 5 first round draft picks.2. The result can only be either maliciously screwing the other team or overpaying for said player. In this case, the Canucks will be much closer to the cap than planned if they match. Or the Flyers end up getting a guy that scored 10 goals last season for $1.9M. But if you think about it, any 'reasonable' offer will obviously be matched by the original team, so there's no point in making it.
Guest Low Roller
Well I know that you can offer a contract to a RFA, but I just never the term 'offer sheet' used. That's all. Also, the way the initial article was worded it seemed that because the Flyers gave Keslar an offer sheet he would be paid $1.9M, not that the Flyers offered $1.9M to Keslar. That's why I was completely confused. And now for Booche's belittling response...
