Contact @ College Street Bar - Tonight (Wed)

Hello all,

My old roommate Shakey has a band called CONTACT that will be playing tonight starting around 10pm at the College Street Bar in Toronto. College Street Bar is located next to the Orbit Room on College just a few blocks W of Bathurst. (574 College St). Cover is only $2

If anyone's interested in checking out some live music tonight, come on out... as mentioned in a previous post of mine, some of you might know Shakey from Frontier Town... he's a phenomenal hand drummer and has led many of the late night drum circles there.

The band is made up of 2 guitars, drums, conga, bass.

They played this past Sat at the Beer Fest to great reviews and sold a whack of CDs. As well they played the Bacchus in London on Sat and the show went really well...folks shakin' it all around... they have been asked back to play there on a regular basis.

Take a read through their bio (not written by Shakey... it's a bit of a cheezy read but the band isn't) and go out and have some bevvies and get down with them tonight!

Hope to see you there... I'll be the girl that looks like the pic on the left (sans feather boa and ballgown though... most likely in jeans... smokes, beer and woo hoo pose will be in effect) [big Grin]

CONTACT

-

Fusing the energy of rock, dub, break-beat, and house music into improvised live and recorded performances, CONTACT is a band on the cusp of an emerging genre of underground music. As an alternative to the DJ, CONTACT assails bored dance floors with irresistible beats and unforgettable hooks.

CONTACT was formed in 2001 as a side project for its five members. Motivated out of a shared interest in dance and jam oriented music, a sound developed quickly for the group. Soon, it became apparent to those involved that something unique had been stumbled upon, and should be pursued. In August of 2002, the group began playing performances in lounges and warehouse parties throughout Toronto. In this period, great strides were made in the development of the band’s aggressive interpretation of house music.

In early 2003, CONTACT recorded its first EP. A collection of three songs, the 30 min disc was recorded completely live, with no overdubs, or excessive post-production. Intended to capture the band’s improvisational ethic, the self-titled album is an excellent example of CONTACT’s raw, emotive style.

With dance-floors across North America atrophied from the status quo, CONTACT is in a unique position to offer rehabilitation. While no one in the CONTACT organization doubts the continued popularity of electronic inspired dance music, it is assumed, however, that the method of presentation has become stale. By drawing the musician out from behind DJ booth, CONTACT provides partygoers a chance to directly witness and participate in the creation of the evening’s music.

CONTACT has cultivated a broad following of fans and supporters throughout Toronto and the surrounding region. With connections to both the underground dance scene, and the exploding jam band phenomenon, CONTACT can rely on a mixed and vibrant crowd whenever necessary. Look to the CONTACT name wherever a dance floor needs filling.

It was an awesome night! Great turnout... bar was packed with beautiful people and Contact was again exceptionally well received. Last night they had some keyboard action happening as well which was cool.

I don't believe that this is a weekly gig but I will find out what their upcoming sched is like. I'll continue to post their dates as I hear of them. Apparently they've also already sold out of their CD Demo that they released just over a month ago.

I wanted them to come to the festival this Saturday at Kimbercote but their guitarist/keyboardist Mike Budd is also a really good DJ and he's spinning this Saturday and can't make it. I spoke w/ Phil and Ryan (their bassist and other guitarist) and am hoping they'll come to the festival regardless as there will no doubt be a bunch of jams happening anyway.

Glad you enjoyed! [big Grin]

Phunky Cauldron >> Hi... just back online today after the blackout, sorry for the delay in getting back to you... was off of work for a while enjoying the raging that ensued from our summertime equivalent of the ice storm... [big Grin]

Here's some info for you on the band and their upcoming plans... they were offered a weekly gig at the College Street Bar after the incredible turnout and performance of last Wednesday ... but they are thinking they will most likely scale this offer back to once a month. Details to be confirmed.

They have also been offered, I believe, one Friday a month at the Havana Club. The owner heard their demo CD and loved it. Havana Club is the venue that I think Cavern is playing at this Wednesday. I hear it's similar to Revival in its decor/classiness and apparently has a wicked sound system. Sounds like a great room and it's downtown location is bound to bring in an eclectic mix of folks. Cool that this bar is interested in bringing in and supporting good live music in that area as opposed to the usual beats that resonate through Adelaide/John establishments.

Contact's only confirmed gig so far is the Bacchus Lounge October 4th in London. With the start of the school year coming up shortly and bringing with it the return of lovely frosh ladies to local S.Ontario towns, it's quite likely the boys will be playing more gigs in the upcoming months, possibly doing some mini tours. [Wink]

I'll post as I hear some more info... and Shane - hopefully they'll play Hamilton sooner than later... I haven't partied there in a while. [smile]
