I have to say you people in Ottawa sure know how to have a good time. I had a most excellent night (well weekend actually) - I was so glad to meet all of you.

Nero and Blue Quater were AWESOME! (<--for lack of a better word) I danced my ass off... felt great, it's been awhile.

Thanks for everything guys, can't wait to come back.

Guest Low Roller

Coffee is my saviour today. There's something to be said about staying up until dawn two days in a row, and then make it to work at a reasonable hour on Monday morning. Bless them beans!

WOW...what a fucking happening Saturday was!!!

We started at 2pm at 40 Main, and by some accounts there were beers being cracked at 6am and beyond on Sunday morn. It was GREAT to see the out-of-towners, you're all welcome anytime!!!!! Sharon is going to be fine in no-time as well [smile] unfortunately the fate of the Tummies is not so bright - I single handedly broke-up them up with my boozy mouth on Sat. night Mung - we hardly knew ye....

I cracked a beer on the porch last night, managed to get through it thinking I was A-OK, then proceeded to lean on the rail and violently vomit out everything I'd put in my body yesterday, haha, that was kinda funny....it's been awhile....

.....can you say.....GIVE 'ER?????????????

(I vomited, did you?)

Yeah, had a good time. Sorry I didn't introduce myself to more of you..(I have a hat...it says Data Cable on it)..was enjoying myself in the beginning but was given some "dirty" mushrooms which weren't sitting well for a while, leaving me feeling pretty sketchy and antsy for a while. Hope Ms. Huxtable is Ok, I stepped outside to get some air and steer myself from the questionable mindset and lo and behold someone is passed out on the ground.

And I'll come right out and say it, knowing full well who reads this board. Blue Quarter was the star of the show on Saturday, described by my friend as "What TND is trying to be". Quite honestly I felt bored seeing Nero's sets, and rejuvenated seeing Blue Quarter. Glad Nero is taking some time off to work on new material though.

Mike could probably offer a better update on Ms.Hux, but last I heard she suffered a minor skull fracture from the fall (minor enough that it will just heal itself) she is going to take a week or so off, to relax and recover. I'm sure she'll be back to 100% in no-time.

yeah i'm just getting my head on straight after this night of debauchery. 40 main partied hardcore, with Hux's 'Teal yer face' jeep pumping tunes past 5am...the whole drive/subway/bus adventure is slept off at this point and i'm semi-coherent, thanking the gods that be I didn't have to work today.

Nero/BQ ripped it up, I feel like I knew almost everybody at that bar...mad large crazy good times.

Funny, I never thought Blue Quarter was "loungey rather than intense". To each his own though, you take from them what you want. My beef with The New Deal is the lack of variety...they're all astounding musicians, but if you're not stoned or on E then they don't seem to keep my attention. After seeing them at the Bluesfest it seemed like the same act they were putting on two years ago when I was seeing them regularly.

Might as well stir the pot a bit more. I am really losing interest in Nero these days. There was a total lack of energy at their show on Saturday, and I realize I'm stepping on people's friends here but they need to retool their act considerably. As you may have noticed, particularly later in the evening, the Nero audience is overwhelmingly Male, and I think that says alot about the type of music they're makign these days. Play fast, hit the pedals, show off your prowess and technical skill but don't share any emotion with the audience. I don't like Yngwie Malmsteen so why would I feel differently about jamband guitar playing done in the same manner?

Wrong side of the bed today. Watch out [smile]

Or, to sum up more easily: I want a band to play FOR me, not AT me as they are doing these days.

Were you at the same show i was at ahess? nero ripped the place apart! Not the best nero show I've ever seen, but it's tough to build up the energy and emotion you're talking about when you have a set time limit and have to share the stage with another band. Frankly, this will probably be my last Blue Quarter show. A little too bland and Drums & Bass for me. I agree wholeheartedly with the lounge analogy. nero on the other hand had me dancing my ass off. I also don't understand your comment about the lack of ladies. Maybe you should come up front where the party is and you'll find it's a pretty good mix of dudes and ladies. nero messed with my mind pretty good that night, it's too bad they didn't do it for you. The last few nero shows I've seen (B-Sides, Killaloe, nero/BQ), the boys have been tearing it up. I think they playing pretty well right now, and I for one can't wait for the 19th/20th shows.

i can't believe the perspectives i'm hearing...

sure jamie's keys sounds and lines are stereotypical but his phrasing and ideas are more diverse than that of olivier imo.

different kinds of electronic music...tND is way more house and breaks than the Drum n Bass BQ.

nero? playing at an audience? the only reason it seems like that's the case if the guitar onslaught.

while I know there's potential for less intensity and more dynamics in a nero set, dave's really expressive and emotional. maybe we're just not listening to things in the same context.

I've seen nero a whack of times and honestly, it's some of the best nero i've heard. the new tune's great and i know the album'll reflect a wide range of sounds that you'll never have heard.

that being said, i don't think the thread is meant to be a discussion or critique of the band...more of a thanks for the great times. I understand that us critical thinkers have to stay on our toes and we dont' need to sugar coat things but affirming great times and performances isn't always pandering to the fuzzy warm hippy ethos.

sorry to hear someone wasn't as blown away as i was.

i was just happy to see mango dancin. i dont' tihnk i've ever seen that.

First off, Sharon - thinking of you... hope you are ok. [smile]

Secondly, thanks to all you excellent Ottawa folk and out-of-towners that made the trip for another amazing eve in the nation's capitol.

Special thanks to Pablo and the PeiPunk for driving my up-on-a-4 day?-5 day?-bender self to and from town. Can't believe I made it through those days still standing! I finally have the wherewithal to make a post on the times past. I have to say that Monday was a day of detox that found me at a work function in cold sweats, doubled over w/ stomach pains, trying my best to have enlightened conversations with my peers. And the BNB show last night saw me taking a nap for a song in order to keep functioning. All in all though, a testament to a good time... might have to be a while before I do that again.... hmmm ... next nero run? Sh*t, that's a mere week away!!!

Great to party wit you all and another special thanks to the 40 main folk who helped fuel my toxic self even more til the dawn came!! Btw... Gateaux - you still laughing over there? [Wink]

Lepellin must have been confused... good times, bad times?!

with the nero folk... it be good times, good times!

And the show? It rocked. As it always does. Thanks boys.

[big Grin]

Not that Nero is Jimi but the reviewers were saying the same thing later on in his career! Meanwhile, Jimi was ripping it up live and in the studio, breaking barriers and making some of the most beautiful music ever. Yeesh!

Society is so jadded. Amazing and wonderful things happen all the time and people just can't appreciate them. Why? Too many guys and not enough chicks at the show! Wow.

I just moved to Ottawa from TO and just got on the sancturary, nero and bq were the welcome I need to this beautiful city. I am glad to hear that the girl who hurt herself is going to be ok. To the critcal thinkers, sometimes life is to good to be analzyed. Take care hope to see you all at NMA w/BNB

Welcome to the Wa Inca Roads! We don't have quite the same music scene as TO, as you could have probably hypothesized (if you're into science), but it's still a pretty sweet city and there are some good bands that roll through here. I friggin hate TO traffic by the way. HATE it!

FWIW, I thought that Nero/Blue Quarter show kicked ass. Does anyone have a Chapman Stick they want to lend me for a while? That thing is cool.

Yowsah...Nero = Jimi. To each his own indeed!

For what it's worth, I think the Nero guys are solid, alls I waz sayin' is that their show on Saturday didn't really impress me as much as the other times I've seen them. Evolve last year was good times (although Dave could barely stand from exceeding drunkenness). Their shows at the Jazz in Guelph have also been really good so let's be clear that I don't dislike this band. Just that the last few times I've seen them here in Ottawa, I've been disappointed with the lack of variety and the lack of meaningful jams. Seems like a whole lot of pedal pushing and guitar showmanship that's not triggering any kind of emotional response from the audience.

I found the same thing happening with Bullfrog, even moreso than Nero. The first time I saw them I thought I lost it...I was so thoroughly impressed. The third or fourth time (including evolve last year) when they were still playing the same songs, I didn't see them in the same light and lost interest.

I think I should have added a caveat to my first post: Having seen the Slip has, in some ways, ruined my ability to see other bands. I expect THAT kind of greatness and musicianship all the time which, admittedly, means I overlook bands with honest intentions who are out there really giving of themselves. Such is life though.

And another caveat I should add is that since moving to Ottawa, I'm now paying $8 to see the bands I was seeing in Guelph for free. I'm seeing them with a larger audience and with more expensive drinks than the Jazz, so that probably raises my expectiations considerably
