jaybone Posted October 6, 2008 Report Posted October 6, 2008 We are heading to Boston this weekend.I've only been there for Phish shows in the past so I haven't really seen the city.Does anyone have any ideas of things I must see/do? Anything I should avoid? We are pretty much just going to be tourists so any advice is appreciated. Definitely want to eat and drink well so restaurant rec's would be swell. Night life suggestions are also welcome. Thanks!

Basher Posted October 6, 2008 Report Posted October 6, 2008 Jay, they have a really cool walking tour, Freedom Trail. It is totally free and you should be able to get a booklet somewhere to describe it.Celtics have preseason games next Friday and Sunday (17 and 19) if you are there. Quincy Market is always fun, lots of cool street performers.Harvard and MIT are just across the Charles, right on the T subway line. Walking around the campuses was fun.I guess you have to go to the Bull & Finch Pub (Cheers), but it is much ado about nothing.Obviously there are lots of great seafood restys there, so try as many as possible!I really like Boston, but driving there is insane.
questcequecest? Posted October 6, 2008 Report Posted October 6, 2008 just walking around the Beacon Hill neighbourhood is great... and check out the market near Faneuil Hall.if you fly into Logan, take the water taxi to shore!
Freak By Night Posted October 6, 2008 Report Posted October 6, 2008 The "T" (subway system) in Boston is excellent. I'd recommend not driving in that city.Walk the "Freedom Trail". This self-guided walk will take you past many historical sites of the the American Revolution. If you get a chance, go over to Cambridge and check out Harvard. The grounds and buildings are beautiful. There are some amazing museums at Harvard too. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts is huge. Their collection of paintings from 400-500 years ago is amazing. The aquarium right on the waterfront is good too.

phishtaper Posted October 6, 2008 Report Posted October 6, 2008 yes, the freedom trail is very cool. look for the brass horse prints in the sidewalks. just breathe in the history of the place. the stain-glass globe at christian science is very cool, as is the whole campus. also, driving hint#2: right hand turns are best made from the left-most lane, so as to avoid all those suckers waiting for pedestrians in the right lane to make right turns. driving hint #1: dont drive in boston.
AD Posted October 6, 2008 Report Posted October 6, 2008 the stain-glass globe at christian science is very cool, as is the whole campus. oooo good call. !!
phishtaper Posted October 6, 2008 Report Posted October 6, 2008 also, be careful when walking around at night. boston is the only city i have ever felt unsafe in. avoid the 'combat zone' downtown. if a local inexplicably suggests taking a cab for a short 3 block ride, dont ask why, just do it.
Jaimoe Posted October 6, 2008 Report Posted October 6, 2008 When I was in Boston a few years ago, the only unsavoury area I found was around Fenway Park. I was in the "Combat Zone", but it wasn't too bad; they've cleaned that area up and it's close to their Chinatown is located, which is the 3rd largest in North America. Boston is a great town and it's becoming more walkable since The Dig.
jaybone Posted October 6, 2008 Author Report Posted October 6, 2008 Oc's and creme de menthe? What's the reference?

bokonon Posted October 6, 2008 Report Posted October 6, 2008 The Boston Aquarium is really neat if you like that sort of thing. So was whale watching. Take a day trip to Salem, it's neat!! I loved Boston. I remember sitting at an intersecton in Boston and seeing fourteen Saabs! I love the old style Saabs, super cool cars.

Hartamophone Posted October 7, 2008 Report Posted October 7, 2008 fenwayitalian food in the north endAgreed. Even if you don't have tickets, Yawkey Way and the area around Fenway is carnavalesque when there's a game happening, and you're lucky to be heading to town when the playoffs are on. If you are at all a sports fan, I would recommend it.As for the North End, Little Italy was a real highlight for my girlfriend and I the last time we were there. Tons of high quality dinner places, with wicked good dessert shops around, too. At one point we were dining by a window on a cobblestone side-street and both remarked that we thought we were in a movie.
jaybone Posted October 8, 2008 Author Report Posted October 8, 2008 Thanks for all the great suggestion!I am starting to get pumped.
