bouche Posted February 6, 2003 Report Posted February 6, 2003 I was reading the interview with Vince Welnick in the latest relix, and I came across this little anecdote that I had no idea existed... Some Dead heads have been asking on the web why you weren't invited to the Dead reunion at Alpine Valley. Was there a snub there? There's been a snub for some time. To be totally honest with you, back in '95 I tried to kill myself on the RatDog bus. In the winter of '95, after Jerry died and after the band broke up, and after I'd been diagnosed with cancer and emphysema and all this shit, I figured it was pretty much over for me, and I tried to kill myself by taking 57 10-mg Valiums and bouncing up into the bunk of the RatDog bus. So that's something that's not gone down too well with Bobby.
MoMack Posted February 7, 2003 Report Posted February 7, 2003 Yeah, I heard that one before... Its kind of strange, after reading McNally's book how the Dead seem to ostracize (how do you spell that?) anyone on that path, excepting Jerry of course... I mean Pig Pen was left out as soon as he went down hill, wasn't included in shit even though it was his life and started as his band, Brent had copies of the music before Kieth was given the boot, for being on the path of depression... gives a whole new meaning to "without a net" disappointing really... not that I'm a big Vince the musician fan, but I like to think that I'm a big "anybody" thats my friend fan...
MarcO Posted February 7, 2003 Report Posted February 7, 2003 a follow-up. The Long, Strange Trip Of Vince Welnick
bouche Posted February 8, 2003 Author Report Posted February 8, 2003 Yet another Welnick sighting... I was just browsing DSO on etree.org (yeah, they gots tons of shows there) and there's a show up with Vince playing unannounced with them. Here are some pics from the show. They do a bunch of JGB stuff too. Disc 1 Set 1: 1 Stop That Train 2 Waiting For A Miracle 3 TLEO* 4 Way To Go Home* 5 Days Like These*> 6 Train To Cry* 7 And It Stoned Me 8 Cripple Creek 9 Tangled Up In Blue Disc 2 Set 2: 1 Cats 2 Hey Pocky Way> 3 Evangeline 4 Melody 5 Bobby McGee Disc 3 Set 2 (cont) 1 After Midnight> Eleanor Rigby> After Midnight 2 Gimme Some Lovin 3 Mission 4 Encore: Midnight Moonlight Download the show
bouche Posted February 8, 2003 Author Report Posted February 8, 2003 I should post the entertaining review... A great show slightly spoiled by a prematurely cut Tangled Up In Blue...The DAT machine at Martyrs was on the fritz and recorded only digi-noise...fortunately the CDR burner was running as backup...unfortunately the 74 min CDR ran out before the end of the first set. Despite this shortcoming, the show is well worth hearing. From Vince Welnick's unannounced appearance to the one-two punch of Nikki Rich and Lisa Mackey on background "Chick Vocals", the whole show smoked. Rob Eaton had the night off and it was going to be a Jerry Garcia Band-type show at their old stomping grounds until Welnick showed up and played his decidedly un-JGB "Way To Go Home" which melted down into a jam suggesting early Traffic. After that John coaxed everyone into the Lennon tune he heard on the radio earlier that day "Days Like These" which segued into Dylan's "It Takes A Train To Cry" It was a free-for-all after that with a "Hey Pocky Way" a "Bobby McGee" sung by Nikki and a great "Gimmie Some loving" mixed in with JGB songs. by the time they yelled "Last Call", Vince had long disappeared into the night escorting a lady on each arm. Not your normal DSO show but a great night!
paisley Posted February 8, 2003 Report Posted February 8, 2003 I have to say that I really enjoy the current line up of TOO... feels really comfortable, much like old times... Vince never really did it for me at all in the band, though I liked some of what he did with the tubes... I just can't find it in myself to feel sorry for someone who got to jam with Jerry (and hang out in his onstage tent!) all the best to Welnick, sounds like he is doing really good with his other band... but I'm glad he isn't playin with the remaining members, it always seemed kind of like an awkward union to me... trying to o.d. on the tour bus wasn't a very cool thing to do... if you're that desperate to cash out, don't do it in your friends and associate's living room... get a cabin on a lake or something... its a personal decision, like drugs... shouldn't end up being other people's nightmare scene...
