Northern Wish
I just can't wrap my head around that Patrick Watson dude, so I'd say this is a two horse race (well it should be anyways).....Brood v. RosettaHmmm. Aside from their killer live shows (both bands) I'd day this is almost a toss up, but I am going to have to throw my vote to Brood because they've crossed this country more times than I am sure they'd like to count- and are super deserving of some recognition after all of this time.Brood for Polaris!!! AD
i think even the junos makes better picks than the shortlist jurorschad vangaalen ftwthere were excellent picks in the longlist, but they went safe for the short. bahwoodpigeonthink about lifesnailhousetimber timbreLa patère rosejunior boyshandsome fursbelle orchestrewolf paradethese are all better albums than 70% of the short list. Northern Wish
No matter how many people tell me how much they enjoy CVG- I don't. Two fulls cds sit at home gathering dust if anyone wants em.........As for the safe picks, I think they are road testing the "new" bands there. You'll see them win a prize in a couple of years given continued success and acclaim.
dave-O
Soft Airplane would be my easy pick from the short list, but I say cancon posterboy Plaskett takes it.I'm baffled by the Think About Life exclusion too, AD.

flipzoso
You can't take previous accomplishments, audience size, label, or any other stuff into consideration. The judges take a clean look at the albums released in that time frame and judge it only on that. So thats why Patrick Watson made it again, thats why there are so many repeat-shortlisters, and thats why you could understand how Leonard Cohen would make the long-list.No matter how many people tell me how much they enjoy CVG- I don't. Two fulls cds sit at home gathering dust if anyone wants em.........seriously!?
Blane
The Rae Spoon album is also killer. Disappointed (but not surprised) that (s)he didn't make the shortlist.
Northern Wish
Very serious. You and I don't seem to see eye to eye on loads of music.... CVG, Patrick Watson etc. Ah well thats why we love to discuss this shit- beauty is in the eye (or the ear) of the beholder!
Jakis
I'd choose Elliott Brood — Mountain Meadowsalso.

SO were you serious about giving them away?

dave-O
I just noticed that the Rural Alberta Advantage didn't even make the long list. I think they're just alright, but those guys got a TON of blogger love over the year.
Northern Wish
Pitchfork gave them (RAA) an 8.0 recently.......Also missing is The Deep Dark Woods- or was their album only recently released?
AD
Also missing is The Deep Dark Woods- or was their album only recently released?I'm pretty sure it qualified for judging - you're right though, major major oversight not to have that album on the list. One of my favourites.
AD
Elliott Brood and Think About Life are playing Thursday night in Ottawa at separate shows in the Bluesfest Byward event.

AD
I just noticed that the Rural Alberta Advantage didn't even make the long list. I think they're just alright, but those guys got a TON of blogger love over the year. The album wasn't eligible for judging. They started selling it from their website and at shows before the period for last year's Polaris had ended. Meaning it was eligible last year, but not this year.
