reba Posted February 26, 2003 Report Posted February 26, 2003 happy birthday johnny cash......... what's your favorite johnny cash song?? 'down there by the train' ....a tom waits cover from american recordings stands out for me......but that might be because i'm listening to it now. with johnny i think my favorite song is always the one i'm listening to
bradm Posted February 26, 2003 Report Posted February 26, 2003 Hmmm...I've never really listened to Johnny Cash's music (but I have huge respect for him), but his cover of Soundgarden's "Rusty Cage" is on my list of all-time best covers. He took a flat-out grunge(y) chunk of heaviousity, and turned it into an angry folk tune. I'm not as enamoured with his cover of NiN's "Hurt", but it's in the same vein. Aloha, Brad
CatPhish Posted February 26, 2003 Report Posted February 26, 2003 Such a hard question reba! I can't pick just one Folsome Prison Blues I walk the line Long black Veil one piece at a time Big River Hiwayman I love Dady Sang Bass ( i think it's a traditional though)

Ms.Huxtable Posted February 26, 2003 Report Posted February 26, 2003 "Well I shot a man in Reno...just to watch him die." FOLSOM PRISON RULES!
Mr. Musicface Posted February 26, 2003 Report Posted February 26, 2003 Being a harp player, I gotta go with "Orange Blossom Special", although I also love "Highwayman". Some of the covers on the new album are just amazing, particularly "Personal Jesus" & "I Hung My Head." Peace, Mr. M.
Ms.Huxtable Posted February 26, 2003 Report Posted February 26, 2003 You liked Personal Jesus? I had trouble with that one.
Velvet Posted February 26, 2003 Report Posted February 26, 2003 Boy Named Sue was written by Shel Silverstein, the singer/songwriter/poet/pothead/artist who wrote everything on Dr. Hooks brilliant Revisited album, the children's book The Giving Tree, and countless other amazing contributions to pop culture. My old band, The Gutterboys used to do a version of Folsom Prison that blended verse for verse with the Sesame Street theme, which was a gas. Back when Oka was happening, Mr. Cash was scheduled to do a benefit show at Barrymore's for the natives. He cancelled after getting too many threatening letters and such. Which was too bad, as the owner had guaranteed us either the opening slot or at least the oppourtunity to meet Johnny backstage and drink his beer when he wasn't looking. Another missed chance. Damn protesters.
Mr. Musicface Posted February 26, 2003 Report Posted February 26, 2003 quote: Originally posted by Ms.Huxtable: You liked Personal Jesus? I had trouble with that one. Really?!? I just loved that dusty, southern blues feel he gave it. I thought it totally suited the song - I was thinking about it as we were driving down to Cinci, with all the big "Jesus Saves!" billboards and the like. Cash's take, to me, just gave it this cynical edge that was perfect. My two-cents anyway. - M.
Vermontdave Posted February 27, 2003 Report Posted February 27, 2003 I'm with CatPhish, WAY too many to pick just one. Folsom Prison Luther Played the Boogie I Walk the Line I Still Miss Someone Five Feet High Peace in the Valley Don't Take Your Guns to Town Johnny Yuma Ira Hayes Dark as a Dungeon Long Black Veil I Got Stripes 25 Minutes to Go Busted Ring of Fire Jackson Cisco Clifton's Fillin Station Daddy Sang Bass Boy Named Sue Sunday Morning Coming Down One Piece at a Time These Hands If I were a Carpenter Hey Porter Orange Blossom Special ad infinitum PEACE
Jaimoe Posted February 27, 2003 Report Posted February 27, 2003 I love Johnny Cash. Of my favourite newish songs of his, I love " Delia's Gone " from American Recordings and " Rusty Cage " from Unchained. I've always loved his old stuff, but " Folsom Prison " is my favourite. The man is a living legend and I love how he hates commercial country radio; they being the kind of radio stations that won't play his music.
Groove Fetish Posted February 27, 2003 Report Posted February 27, 2003 for all the wonderful social commentary that it is...Folsom Prison Blues for sure! Happy Birthday Johnny.
ScottieMac Posted February 27, 2003 Report Posted February 27, 2003 quote: Originally posted by Ms.Huxtable: "Well I shot a man in Reno...just to watch him die." FOLSOM PRISON RULES! Ditto. I read somewhere that Johnny did a version of Neil Young's 'Pocahontas' and Robert Palmer's 'Addicted to Love' for his Unchained album but they were left out. I'd love to hear those.
