    Broken Social Scene Bio

Broken Social Scene materialized in 1999 when K.C. Accidentals Kevin Drew and Brendan Canning, formerly of By Divine Right, bonded their friendship into a band. They spent the next few years honing an atmospheric rock sound in their native Toronto and the dynamic was great. Feel Good Lost marked their debut album in 2001 and introduced a revolving cast of Canadian indie musicians. Drew's fellow mate from Do Make Say Think, Charles Spearin, was added to the band, as well as Evan Cranley (Stars), James Shaw, and Emily Haines (Metric). By the time their guitar-fueled sophomore effort, You Forgot It in People, was released in fall 2002,

Broken Social Scene had become an 11-piece collective. Jason Collett,

Andrew Whiteman, Justin Peroff and Leslie Feist fulfilled the band's

bombastic, orchestrated sound and critics loved it. You Forgot It In

People was a buzz among indie cohorts and plans for a stateside release on

Arts & Crafts was slated for the following summer. A surprise, however,

coincided those plans in spring 2003 when Broken Social Scene won a Juno

for "Alternative Album of the Year" for You Forgot It In People. In order

to maintain praise from critics, the band issued their first ever b-siders

& rarities collection, Bee Hives, in spring 2004. For the band's 2005

self-titled studio album, Broken Social Scene once again joined producer

David Newfeld. Additional contributions by select members of Stars,

Metric, Do Make Say Think, Raising theFawn, the Dears and others

contributed to the ambitious sounds of Broken Social Scene. A joint North

American tour with Feist followed its release.

    Bedouin Soundclash

Named after Israeli fusion artist/producer Badawi’s 1996 release – which

pays homage to nomadic Arabic poet tribe the Bedouins – power trio Bedouin

Soundclash formed in 2001 at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario.

Unlike most musicians who try to mimic their musical idols, Bedouin

Soundclash likes to forge its own musical path creating music that

    embodies

each member’s personal and diverse musical preferences. With a seductive

combination of lead singer Jay Malinowski’s soulful, melodic wail and

hypnotic rhythmic guitar grooves, Eon Sinclair’s deep dubbing bass, and

    Pat

Pengelly’s driving heavyweight rhythms, Bedouin Soundclash creates its own

innovative fusion of Reggae, Rock, Punk and Soul – taking chances and

pushing hard at the boundaries that separate musical genres – resulting in

a fusion of music the band can truly call its own.

Settling in Montreal in 2004, Bedouin Soundclash began work on its

sophomore album Sounding A Mosaic. Produced by Punk-Reggae legendary bass

player Daryl Jenifer of Bad Brains, Sounding A Mosaic brought Bedouin

Soundclash to the forefront of the Canadian music scene, a

Reflections Cabaret is proud to present the Quartertones this Friday (February 25).

A collaboration of three classically trained jazz musicians along with two local veteran hip-hop producers, The Quartertones bring the Funk, Jazz-Hip Hop fusion to another level.

The Quartertones are at the forefront of Toronto’s organic rare-groove scene, providing the audience with the latest soulful sounds. Born of atmospheric smoky lounge club environs, the Quartertones are part professionally trained jazz musicians and part hip hop experimentalists groomed on a diet of live improvisation, making them both exceptionally musical and highly innovative. Experimental and progressionist in their approach, The Quartertones dedication to emancipating themselves from the common fare comes with honesty and respect for musicality. Traversing the land of old soul, jazz, funk, and hip-hop, The Quartertones emerge as a fusion band combining Bob James, Grant Green, and Roy Ayres, with an organic hip-hop feel. In brief, the sound is live Hip-Hop, Jazz and Funk performed over a drum machine, with a DJ.

Joined by hip hop producer Planet Pea on the drum machine and DJ Serious who augmented Pea’s drums. With the band solidified, they began to play at the live improvisational shows named Freestylin’. Organized by Planet Pea, the idea of the shows were to bring live jazz to hip-hop in a new way by giving local emcees the chance to freestyle (improvise) over a live jazz-hip hop jam session. With this element weaved into the bands ethic, The Quartertones often offer fresh approaches to their songs, making their sets unpredictable, exciting and raw. With the recent addition of Katherine Bates, a classically trained Jazz singer with a BA in Music from the University of Toronto, the band has taken on yet another change in form and expanded its repertoire into the world of vocals.

Show starts promptly at 10pm and tickets are $12.00.
