  1. Hey!

Yes, Jambolaya is my band, goto www.jambolaya.ca

50% of my band is montreal born/raised, the other 50% r from elsewhere in canada, but reside here now. Montreal rocks, but "jambands" are few and far between here(due to the unexplained local obsession with dj's/club music). However, the scene is growing in mtl, thanks to the out-a-town McGillies that crave more from their music than the trendy local scenes. keep in touch, we shouild meet up for some drinks and scheme up some schemes...Ive been saying for years how montreal's music scene needs an overhaul. perhaps if enough people around here put their mind together we can shake things up a little more. i can go on and on about how odd the music scene is in montreal, but i'll stop at that.

    peace.

  2. hi everyone.

Was wondering if any of y'all coudl direct me to getting in touch with ottawa student press and other types of press that would be interested in covering jambolaya's show at the bayou on april 12th

    thanks.

    peace.

  3. Dig this.

    IMO

soundboard recordings don't bring out the best in live performances. Stereo microphones and a mini disc or Dat recorder do. As long as the band being taped allows tapers, and the tapers are not using the soundboard, then there is nothing that anyone can legally do to stop you.

    have fun.

    Dan.

  4. as good as lemonwheel was, Oswego was the big hook for me too.

even though the HEAT was UNBEARABLE!!

i also did e for the first time at a phish show during that second set. seriously, the most euphoric experience ever.

  5. I remember in high school, whenever i'd hear

"roxanne" by the police, i would have the best day.

Metallica's album "Master of Puppets" or any metallica recording from before the 90's is also a fabulous way to get your blood flowing in the morning.

Bluegrass does the trick for me as well. Anything infectuous and energetic.

other suggestions? see, music is better than coffee too!

  6. Thanks Booche, see you in a month!

Remember I Mother Earth??? I saw that band like 5 times, and that is the band that got me into the new schol jam rock. way before phish entered my life. they could jaaaaaaaam, and boy did they ever!! what happened to them? Edwin (the singer) decided he wanted allthe glory for himself, and left the band. now they are nothing. which goes to show how you can't fuck with the right formula.

By the way, i love this website and all you people on it. I am honored to be part of this fun lovin intellectualy community.

  7. is a jamband just a bunch of musicians that like phish and the dead, trying to emulate their heroes?

where does the definition of a jamband begin and end? improvisation is suppposed to break the barriers of categorization.

does jam music have to appeal to hippies to be considered "jamband" material?

does improvisation come from the soul? or does it come from a desire to be like phish or the dead, or the 'next' phish or dead?

is a 'jamband' just a band u go see when u cant be at a phish show, hence dubbing all jambands "not quite phish"?

who is the next phish, and can there be one ??

    YOUR devil's advocate...

    Dan

  8. my first show...

    LEMONWHEEL

after years of avoiding phish, i drove out to lemonwheel, had a sick time. 20 shows later, including oswego and big cypress, i must say that phish reinstilled my desire to improve and keep playing music. a full on addiction. i learned about a lot of these "underground" bands. most of em i liked automatically just because of their association with the phish scene. but the problem i find with most "jambands" ( a word that is growing old IMO) is that instead of writing their own music , and taking an improvisational approach to it, they take one aspect of something that phish does, and streches it out ad infinitum. shit, i dont know how i ot on this tangent. maybe it is a whole other topic altogether. waht i am trying to say is that phish opened my ears and eyeslike no other band ever has. but i also learned that the phish periphery can lead to closed mindedness, cuz frankly, no one can ever be phish.

  9. this is such a foreign topic for me. Montreal is the smoker's capital of the world. to the point that if an establishment indepentently goes non-smoking, it is doomed to fail. so ridiculous! quiting is imposible here, you guys are lucky to have smoke free environments.
