  1. "X" refers to the battery. You can do a google search on Toyota Prius battery replacement...it seems that it costs between $3,500-$5,000 to replace the battery, but according to Totota, the battery should last just about as long as the car. They expect the cost of the battery to decrease over time.

  2. Like Brad, I got introduced to a lot of the scenesters through Hux...we met back at the Millennium Bureau of Canada, and once I heard that he had a crush on Bobby, well, I was intrigued, if not a little scared. It's also because of him that I've got this Larry tag, though I blame that on his anti-semitic "all Jews are neurotic bacon-eating good lookers" thing.

Thanks for the good times, and have a good one. I'll try to get one foot back in the scene so we can down some jager again soon.

  3. Good lord, I would love to see that band, but that's a Sunday night making logistics tough. Chutes Too Narrow is one of my faves of recent memory. Are you going Adam? (I met you briefly at a show and later discovered you used to work with my lady friend Keri at VSO, who is also a big Shins fan...).

  4. I agree with AD's point that this story shouldn't have anything do with the ramifications on pot decriminalization. Four police officers were shot and killed by a dangerous, criminal a$$hole. That's the story...what happened, and how to prevent it from happening again. It's tragic.

However, as it's been noted, the media and various pundits are already making this into an issue surrounding the impending pot legislation, so it's fair to speak about that also. After all, many of us know people whose lives were unjustly messed up because police officers, who were doing their jobs, busted them for something that they should have never been busted for (no, I'm not equating murder with a criminal record).

As someone who strongly believes that the criminalization of pot is very unjust, I have a vested interest in making sure this tragic story doesn't reverse legislation aimed at making things a little more just and sane.

The other issue here, is that if pot were legalized (vs. decriminalized) this wouldn't have happened. Legalizing pot kills organized crime that depends on pot.

  5. I went snowboarding the first time a few weekends ago at Fortune. It was hard as hell, fun as hell, and I can't wait to go again. You start to pick it up as you go along...by the second time out you will most likely notice real improvement. Be patient, and don't mind the 7 year olds wizzing by you.

I would recommend finding two other people to go with, and get a private lesson. I believe a 3-person private lesson runs $70 or so, and then you throw in the rentals...There's a beginner package that's pretty cheap, made slightly more expensive with a private lesson, but worth it IMO.

We had a lesson with this girl named Amy, who was super cool and oozing niceness. I would recommend her if you can schedule something.

Clothes? It's all about layering (fleece) and keeping the wetness out, as I've learned. They don't have goggles to rent but you don't really need them (they did have some crap-ass pairs in the lost and found). You can go out and buy a cheap pair.

Stretching before can't hurt. You're knees/quads/wrists/ass may be a little sore the next day, but it's a small price to pay.

Poutine for lunch will give you the necessary boost to keep going.

  6. One of the nice things about being Jewish is that we're supposed to drink 4 glasses of wine two nights in a row during Passover (hey, it's good for the heart!). I think we're also supposed to get trashed on Simchat Torah, but I haven't celebrated that one since elementary school..oh, manishevitz grape juice, where have you gone?

As far as Bush and the other warmongering, pro-death penalty, give tax breaks to the rich, fake Christians go, ask them why they never quote the Beatitudes from Christ's Sermon on the Mount.

Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the Earth.

Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God etc.

Jesus was a liberal hippy who'd be an outcast in Republican circles if he were around today, and he'd be drinking wine with the other 75% of Jews who voted for Kerry.

  7. I read this before...it almost sounds reasonable except it's coming from a guy who values freedom so much that his idea of a utopian society is one where you're not allowed to play music, women are covered head to toe, and thieves get their hands cut off.

Also, Sweden may not have been targetted for an attack, but what about Bali, Turkey and Morocco (all targets of attack?) Islamo fundamentalists have been caught targetting the Netherlands, France (for their banning of headscarf rule) and have threatened any country that participated in the Afghan mission (that includes us). I know they hate U.S./Israeli policies, but they sure as hell hate freedom and democracy also.

The guy is a fascist killer. I'm no fan of Bush, but I don't personally have any patience for any sort of moral equivalency between him invading Afghanistan and Iraq (getting rid of the Taliban and Saddam, "respectively") with civilians getting killed unintentionally and bin Laden directing a mission that aimed to kill as many civilians as possible. Nevermind the previous bombings in Africa etc.

I didn't support the Iraq war, but most Iraqis initially did, which is worth remembering. It's just too bad Bush and his cronies are idiotic ideologues who don't listen to anyone else.

    My 2 cents of course...

  8. Seymour M. Hersh, the Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reporter now writing for The New Yorker magazine, was asked Tuesday at the University of Michigan why Sen. John Kerry isn't easily leading the presidential race over George W. Bush when the war in Iraq is going so badly.

"I think one thing you have to face up to is the fact there are roughly 70 million people in America who do not believe in evolution - and those are Bush supporters," said Hersh, who is up front about his support for Kerry.

  9. I'm still more of a lurker than poster around here (I've got lots of online porn discussion board commitments...you wouldn't believe what people are saying about ass implants on bigbutts.com!), but my scientific explorations into this matter have proven that people who genuinely don't like negativity don't tend to actively pursue it.

Personally, and this is just personally, I would be embarassed to get caught up in an ONLINE tussle where feelings were getting hurt. Hurling big emotions through a computer? Not my thing baby. If somebody calls me on my skinny ass on bigbutts.com, I'll just let it slide and find another portal devoted to butts.

    Word.

Lucid dreaming is hardcore. I got into it when I took a sleeping and dreaming course while doing my psychology degree years ago, and it does work if you work at it.

One of the things I did (weird but recommended) was to ask myself at different points throughout the day if I was dreaming or awake, and how could I be sure? Then, before going to sleep, I would tell myself to wake up during a dream. If you have any sort of recurring dreams, that helps too, because you can recognize certain "triggers."

It's a subtle artform though...once you wake up in your dream, it can be very hard to control. A few months ago, I had the craziest lucid dream/dream ever where I was able to fly and control my flying speed. I swear, I could even hear the wind rushing by my ears. It was one of the most thrilling experiences of my life, which may sound pathetic, but it was a HUGE rush.

So...I would recommend just getting into your dreams overall. Keep a dream journal, rent the movie Waking Life (Richard Linklater), think about dreams, wonder about dreams, etc.

Hey, you spend roughly 1/3 of your life sleeping anyway, so might as well pay attention.

  11. I friggin love passing out to music.

I second MarkO's Brian Eno recommendation...also on my list:

    Susumu Yokota - Sakura

Sigur Ros - Aegis Byrjun (I think that's what it's called)

    Philip Glass - Solo Piano

    Keith Jarret - Koln Concert

    Mogwai - Rock Action

Miles Davis - Kind of Blue (obviously great while fully conscious but I find it uber relaxing)

And recently...I think it's the Be Good Tanyas my girlfriend has. That's pretty chillin too.

  12. Hey, how about I start?

I got back earlier this morning since we (me, Dancing Bear and another dude) decided it would be better to beat the traffic and DB had to catch a flight from Montreal today so no risking that.

This was my 15th show (and 16th if you count both nights), but first since the big Limestone event in '98.

    1) First of all, Phish doesn't control the weather, but the way concert organizers handled the announcement was piss poor. They didn't say the show was cancelled. They said that everyone who hadn't gotten in from the I-91 had to turn around because they weren't going to be able to get in. Fortunately, once the temporary shock and angst wore off, I'm pretty sure the vast majority of people decided to park their cars somewhere and walk. We had it pretty easy...we turned around and went up the 5, parked a couple miles from the venue, and got a ride with a bunch of our stuff for most of the way. Why the band/organizers couldn't recommend that people park and walk, or take the 5, is beyond me. The announcement was so sombre and cryptic on the radio, and it didn't need to be.

    2) The grounds were obviously in rough shape. At one point during the first night, my friend Andy said this: "It's beginning to smell a little like India." Now, he's been to India, so I hope nobody's offended, but the point is that there was serious mud, made somewhat better thanks to copious woodchips placed strategically and a few wooden bridges here and there. Still, many lost their shoes, which made me really want a Cavern.

Geezus, the dedication of some folks who literally walked 10-15 miles to see the show is just unbelievable. And really, even though the whole thing was an ordeal, there was something almost magical about seeing all these fans just ditching their cars and walking it. It was hardcore, I don't care if you like Phish or not.

    3) The music - As a disclaimer, I sort of moved on from Phish a few years ago, but I'm still fond of the tunes, and I'm certainly grateful for all the amazing times. I have no patience for these wankers with no lives of their own who think Trey owes them something for some reason. They're friggin musicians. They don't owe you squat. Nobody ever put a gun to anyone's head and said, "Go spend money on Phish."

That being said, I thought both nights were sub-stellar...so much so that I skipped the last 2 sets of the 2nd night. There were definitely highlights and those peakish moments, but overall I thought the band was much looser than usual and pretty damn sloppy at times. They flubbed lyrics, and their timing was just off on too many occasions, and yeah, Trey was the biggest culprit but I find that more unfortunate than maddening. As usual, I thought Mike was solid as a rock. They seemed to seriously lack energy, and I think there were a lot of reasons behind this.

For one, it was their last show and god knows what was going on in their minds and hearts. Two, they don't practice like they used to. Three, the crowd had to deal with a lot of crap just to get there and I think most people were already drained before the music started. Anyone who knows anything knows there's a feedback/energy thing with the audience, and neither was clicking right in my view. I really thought that was too bad. I was really looking forward to that buzz and anticipation before they came on the first afternoon, but it just wasn't there. I couldn't feel the celebratory mood I was looking forward to.

I'm glad I went, but I think I moved on from that sort of scene a long time ago. You know, as you get older, I think it's hard not to get more jaded. You notice things changing...there were no 18 year olds on their cellphones when I was at Plattsburg in 96; I didn't used to notice the amount of trash and disregard so many show for the grounds back then; I was so pissed off about paying $3 for a friggin bottle of water on the grounds after all the crap we went through; and frankly, I was just younger and more wild-eyed about the whole thing back then.

I'll always cherish the amazing times I had seeing Phish, and I wish all of them nothing but the best. I also hope people can close this chapter of their lives and look back on the adventures for what they were, and remember what it was that kept them coming back for more [color:"black"] ...

I'll be there, and yeah, upstairs is the place to be. Last night's show got too crammed and hot on the floor, which would have been good if it was in a naked forbidden dance context, but it wasn't really like that.

SY's 2nd last album, Murray Street, has some wicked tunes on it too. This is just one of those shows I figure I need to see. They're legends baby.

So who's gonna get ripped enough to yell at Lee to play a Dead tune? I'm counting on you people.

Yeah, I remember seeing Mr. Belvedere on that CTS channel and a roundtable of rabbis talking it up. Not my cup of tea but to each their own. What happened to Carleton's ITV? That used to be channel 65 and I can't seem to find it, but maybe it's just off for the summer.

Also, I should have mentioned that there are lots of double standards at play with the people criticizing Al Jazeera. Ever since 9/11, there has been all kinds of Muslim bashing on the airwaves. I've seen Jerry Falwell types talking about the prophet Muhammed being a pedophile, debates on whether or not Islam itself (and/or the Koran) promotes violence, etc. There are also some right-wing radio hosts in the U.S. (like Michael Savage) who say plenty of blatantly racist things who still haven't gotten pulled.

Anyhoo, there will be plenty of scrutiny so we'll see what happens.
