Beethoven's Ninth for sale

ArtsCanada

LONDON - A musical manuscript of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony that includes the composer's handwritten markings, changes and criticisms is set for sale.

On May 22, Sotheby's London will auction off three bound volumes of 465 pages that includes the complete score of the famous symphony, according to The New York Times.

Most of the work is by two copyists, but six in total took part in writing the manuscript including Beethoven himself.

The manuscript dates from 1824 and is expected to fetch up to $5.9 million.

Sotheby would not comment on the seller but the manuscript is in the archive of the publisher Schott Musik International of Mainz, Germany.

Beethoven's scribbled changes, corrections and other markings can be seen on several pages.

A number of pages contain his written criticisms of the two copyists' work. "Du verfluchter Kerl" ("You damned fool") he writes in one passage.

The manuscript also contains the odd coffee stain.
