Discover Entertainment Presents Maximum Jazz recording artists

RABNETT 5

The Rabnett 5 are a five-piece jazz-trained, nature-influenced ensemble with a mixed bag of rhythmic ideas. Influenced by African and Brazilian cultural music, hip-hop, bebop, acid jazz and contemporary techniques from 20th century classical music, the band creates a relevant and tonal musical dialogue between five like-minded musicians.

Fronted by guitarist/composer Rich Rabnett, the band shares (with the exception of the Calgarian drummer Dan) the experience and love of living in the Nelson area. They played their first gigs together over a year ago at the Glacier Gourmet and the Fluid Lounge and since have continued to explore the audible results of combining their personalities. The Rabnett 5's other members are Kiyoshi Elkuf on saxophones, Dan Gaucher on drums, Mike Kennedy on upright bass, and Ian Cox on piano.

"This is the best young band I've heard... ever!" ~ Kate Hammett-Vaughan.

Though the players have been playing together in different configurations for three years or more, this present group formed in the fall of 2001. The band play regularly in Vancouver at the Sugar Refinery, the Backstage Lounge, Cafe Deux Soleil, the Cellar Jazz Cafe and the Western Front. The band has been featured on CBC, college radio throughout Canada and has played sold out shows at the Vancouver Jazz Fest this past summer.

Discover Entertainment Presents from Calgary

GUERRILLA FUNK MONSTER

Guerrilla Funk Monster is a four piece original band with an experimental musical

style that blends rock, blues, funk, punk, reggae, and world music in such a unique

way that it is hard to categorize. They simply cannot be defined by just one genre.

Their eclectic mix of songs provides the audience with diversity, intensity, and

creative musicianship.

THE ONE THING THAT REMAINS THE SAME IS THAT THEY KEEP PEOPLE

CAPTIVATED ON AND OFF OF THE DANCE FLOOR ALL NIGHT LONG WITH THEIR

INTENSE GROOVE-ORIENTED SOUND.

Guerrilla Funk Monster draws inspiration from a wide range of influences that include:

Jimi Hendrix, The Meters, Funkadelic, James Brown, Tom Waits, Captain Beefheart,

The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Soundgarden, Faith No More, The Minutemen, The Melvins,

The Stooges, Bob Marley, Fishbone, and Fela Kuti.

The band’s current lineup has been together since November 2000 and has amassed

a lengthy repertoire of over 30 first-rate originals, a dozen solid covers, and hours of

sweaty, danceable jams. They have an extremely strong presence on stage and

exhibit a seemingly endless amount of energy regardless of whether they are playing

their first song or their last.
