    B.C. school yoga classes slammed

Last Updated: Tuesday, January 9, 2007 | 12:41 PM ET

    CBC News

A school program to fight childhood obesity that includes yoga is drawing complaints from some Christian parents in the Quesnel area in B.C.'s Cariboo region.

They say yoga is a religion, and shouldn't be taught in public schools.

Chelsea Brears, who has two children in the school system, said her son was asked to do different poses and "to put his hands together."

Brears, a Christian, said she doesn't want her children exposed to another religion during class time.

"It's not fair to take prayer out, and yet they're allowing yoga, which is religion, in our schools."

Local rancher Audrey Cummings doesn't believe Christian children should be doing yoga at all.

"There's God and there's the devil, and the devil's not a gentleman. If you give him any kind of an opening, he will take that."

The two women have complained to the education minister and the Quesnel school board.

But school board chair Caroline Neilsen said the yoga is being taught as a stretching exercise, not as a spiritual practice.

Neilsen also noted that children who don't want to practise yoga can do different exercises or leave the classroom.

  3. So I'm going to Ireland in May and was wondering if there are any DO NOT MISS things that people here have experienced (Besides the Guiness Brewery).

We are renting a car so will have access to the entire country. Any cool places/stories appreciated.

  4. After 30 years of being a Leaf Fan I think I'll trade my jersey in. Fuck it's exciting watching Pittsburgh these days. Crosby is so fun to watch. He makes hockey exciting again.

Who am I kidding I'll still watch the Leafs, but I'll be watching the Penguins as well.

Yeah, the guy wearing the $4,000 suit is holding the elevator for the guy who doesn't make that in four months. Come on!....... Yeah, like I'm going to take a whiz through this $5,000 suit. Come on!

    I love that episode.

  7. Good for them.

A village in the shadow of the Italian Alps that sees no sun for three months of the year is installing a giant mirror on a mountainside to reflect sunshine into the town square.

A tailor-made sheet of steel will be positioned this week on a nearby peak at a height of 1,100 metres to direct sunlight down to the tiny hamlet of Viganella, in the narrow Antrona valley, north of Turin.

Viganella, with a population of only 197, suffers from a complete lack of direct sun from Nov. 11 to Feb. 2.

Mayor Pierfranco Midali presented the project for approval in January of this year to help lift his community out of darkness during those 83 days a year.

Computer controlled monitors will enable the eight-by-six-metre sheet of metal to follow the path of the sun and reflect its rays down to a 250-square-metre area in the village square for at least six hours a day.

The project cost of $151,000 has been covered by the local governments and a private bank.
