  1. Ya, went on a boat cruise around Vancouver's waterfront last night with Particle, Mr. Rosewater and DJ Harry. DJ Harry has recently gained some noteriety by re-mixing String Cheese Incedent music into mellow house grooves - danceable yet soothing... He's also a cool guy (he blocked the wind for us so we could light a joint) I was more excited, however, about seeing Particle perform their first Canadian show. (as far as I know)

They were very reminicent of The New Deal and STS9 ie: slammin' drummer kickin' house/disco beats all night. The main difference, though was that they had a rippin' guitarist - he was really good, but I was expecting 2 of them. If you listen to their demo songs on the website ( www.particlepeople.com ) it is definately 2 different guitarists - I was a little disappointed by this. Also, after a while, the disco/house beat thing gets a little stale - variation would have been more interesting.

The crowd was an eclectic mixture of dance music fans and dirty-hippy jam band fans. A sign of the times in this scene, I guess.... butt, in the end, it was all about SHAKIN' BOOTY.

I saw about 3 minutes of Mr. Rosewater - they sounded alright, I guess... (how's that for a review?)

I'm off to see Green Room tonight - some solid Canadian FUNK

    Cheers....

  2. After they made their CD (called "Mule") they had a spat with the record company and disbanded for legal reasons (to get out of the deal)

I saw a band 2 years ago in Whistler for NYE called Sweaty Cheddar - a sort-of incarnation of SSMB (the 4 foot tall guitarist was in it) and last year, they reunited for 2 shows in Vancouver and 2 in Whistler - They were great shows, but I haven't heard of them since.

  3. Here's my $0.02:

    1) Particle (3 songs downloaded from www.particlepeople.com) CHECK THIS BAND OUT!!

    2) The Meter's "Funkify Your Life" - I needs tha funk

    3) STS9 "Variety Playhouse" killer live show

    4) SCI 11/18/00 Atlanta

    5) Dead - Hamilton 1990 - (ahhhh... the memories) the best Scarlet>Fire ever!

Bookshelf: "Geek Love" - by Katherine Dunn - very strange tale - highly entertaining.

(I know I mentioned this before, but...)

I highly recommend Particle - they're a 5 piece band featuring a guitar duo (one guy plays like Jerry - the other is a Chet Atkins meets Dickey Betts kinda player) they pull off some amazing Allmans-style guitar harmony shit while the keyboardist wails on the Clavinet over funk/disco/jazz fusion beats. - all instrumental. They formed on a boat cruise after a Phish show in Florida or something...

I'm gonna check out some of your recommendations, everyone... thanks!

  4. Just saw Disco Biscuits at the Wett Bar in Vancouver. There was a last minute change of venue because the band couldn't fit all their shit on the stage at the Starfish Room. The vunue turned out to be ideal due to its large dancefloor and extra long stage.

They played the first 10 minutes hidden from view behind a screen that was playing Charlie Brown's Holloween special then they cranked out a jam meltdown set, heavy on dance beats and trippy synth.

Some of their stuff reminded me of the kind of whacked-out jazz that Phish plays like 'Reba'. There was a definate Phish influence present, along with electronica. They were impressively tight and diverse, although the singing was shit (no wonder they don't sing much) They had explosive highs and nailed some killer grooves as well. That guitarist plays like a muthafucka!

I heard some people say that the band had vastly improved since their last showing in Vancouver in 1999. I thought they were awesome either way. In this genre, however, I'm still a bigger fan of sts9 and Particle. (If you haven't heard Particle - go to: www.particlepeople.com and check out their downloads.)

I hope this adds flavour to your life somehow...
