On Martin Perna, founder of Antibalas:
Martin and I have known each other for many years, and as far back as I could remember, he was tireless in championing Fela’s musical and socio-political legacy to anyone who would listen, years before Antibalas was ever formed.
He, along with the many past and present members of Antibalas have worked very very hard and sacrificed much in order to inform this generation to the depth, the funkiness and the social significance of afrobeat music. My respect and support for this goes without saying.
It is as a direct result of the awareness and enthusiasm for afrobeat music they’ve generated, that new groups have formed and found labels interested in releasing their records and live show promoters excited to book afrobeat groups.
2004 is going to be great year for afrobeat, as there will be plenty of styles and groups to choose from, whether you love them or hate them. Whomever you choose to support, will be good for everyone as a whole. Let’s continue to build on a beautiful thing:
AKOYA : NYC’s powerhouse ensemble’s debut "Introducing The Akoya Afrobeat Ensemble" is out now, so get down to one of their red-hot shows and buy it!
AFRODIZZ : Montreal, Canada’s dons have just returned from touring the UK and are fixing to release their debut full length CD in June so check for them out: http://www.afrodizz.hothost.tv/under.html
FEMM NAMELESS : The queens of the game has also just returned from touring the UK and will be releasing their debut this summer: http://www.femmnameless.com
CHICAGO AFROBEAT PROJECT : We can’t forget the Midwest finest (what’s up Scotty!)as they go into the studio soon to cut their debut, get the sordid details at: http://www.chicagoafrobeatproject.com
AFROBEATDOWN : Los Angeles’ Afrobeat exponents are keeping real busy these days: http://www.afrobeatdown.com
BELGIAN AFROBEAT ASSOCIATION : Fela lives… in Antwerp! (in case you never knew) Get their slamming debut CD “The King Is Among Us” from Groove distribution and check: http://baba.be
FANGA : France’s afrobeat cats have a new one out “Afrokaliptyk”
http://60gp.ovh.net/~afrofang/accueil.html
ASIKO : 5-track CD EP is now available http://www.asikomusic.com
MASSAK : Frank Biyong’s pioneering group in Paris France. http://massak.free.fr/html/frame.htm
APHRODESIA : We can’t forget about San Francisco. Check their debut “Shackrobeat Vol. 1”. http://aphrodesia.org
ANTIBALAS : New CD out in June, pure afrobeat coming live to a town near you soon after for sure, so stay on the lookout: http://www.antibalas.com

bio
eccodek's More Africa in Us? blends voices from Rwanda and Mali, ethnic and urban grooves, the Mongolian erhu's mournful melodies with electronic textures in a dub mix.
Influenced by Bill Laswell , Kruder and Dorfmeister , and African Head Charge , it is a seductive musical postcard.
eccodek's 2nd album is by Canadian producer and remixer Andrew McPherson, a member of the US chart topping, electro-jazz project four80east and remixer for Iceland's gusgus , Ireland's Andy White , Canada's Jane Siberry, Philosopher Kings, Natalie MacMaster and Seattle's Pigeonhead .

Barefoot, Mark Wilson (solo,acoustic)

The Pepper Jack Cafe
38 King Willy
Hamilton, Ont.
Info: (905)525-6666
Barefootcombines a unique blend of musical genres into their sound. Their live show intends to provoke thought, emotion and send positive energy throughout the audience. Heather Kelday(singer/songwriter-guitar) regularly uses 8 different tunings that she can readily change between while utilizing a delay pedal to create ambient sounds, and leads with soft melodic to strong wailing vocals. Paul Cressman(upright Bass, Electric Bass) plays the bass both plucked and bowed for sweet acoustic undertones, and funks it up on the electric bass. Jess Clemons (Keyboard) stays true to the tune of a jazz piano and makes smooth transitions into organ and vibes while singing warm harmonies. Aaron Mangle (Drums/Percussion) experiments with many different sounds and beats and contributes a tight rhythmic dynamic to the music.
Mark Wilson (guitar) IS the Man!

Hoist turned me off Phish back when it first came out.
What up with Riker?
I vote Hoist off.
-
What a quinkydink, I was just about to post this show.
Anyway, looking forward to seeing Turvey Quartet and Guesthouse never disapoints. Dig the reggae vibe. What's that singers name that sounds like Peter Tosh?
-
Sorry to hear that.
-
I've been looking forward to this show for a while now. The live shows Shane's been passing around have been 'smokin'
It's also Electric Meat's first time playing at PJC, or even Hamilton I believe.
-
I too am with Marc-O on Harry Hood. If they didn't play it all weekend I'm sure you could see it coming, but it would be a great song to remember their last one by. The hairs on the back of my neck go up every time I've heard it start at a show.

For a special boy on his special day. Here's to you flowers. Have a good one.
ps: don't get all swilly like.

Can't wait for this show, but too bad it ends so early. After getting all fired up with the Dog and the Feat what's a Deadhead like me suppossed to do after the show? If only there was a place to go party.
