  1. Greetings Jamband community...

I figured i've read enough non-music posts on this forum to go ahead with this topic.

My friend and I have a comic strip called Awesome Marcus Ninja. It's about an "ordinary" guy with an "ordinary" life/ job who happens to be... a ninja. Since "ninja" does not pay, he is forced to cope with living living the life a "normal" person (ie. job, girlfriend, etc.), although we try to showcase his eccentric attitudes (ie. sense of justice) in the strip as well.

The site is updated every week. There are only three strips posted now (one per week), but plenty waiting to be uploaded. Also, there is a message board / email address on the site if you want to let us know what you think of the comic. Here's the address:

enjoy! and be sure to check back every week for new strips...

  2. The Peterborough band, The Spades, plays this wednesday in kingston at AJ's. The openning band is Chris Koster.

If you have not checked out this band, do yourself a favour and be there! If need be (since i hate doing this "what do they sound like" sh!t) i would describe them as a surf/country/rockabilly/rock band that jams hard on electric tunes and can also bust out some sweet acoustic/mandolin material.

For more details check out www.thespades.ca

  3. I only made it down for the friday show. It was an average Spades show. The second set was stronger than the first.

A good mafia sting > words. Decent versions of marijuana, burning on fumes, parking meter, perservatives, the causeway (a new tune) was played okay.

Ya... if you haven't checked out this band make sure to do so. I've seen em upwards of 35 times by now.

For those people wandering what they sound like. Go to thespades.ca and listen to some music.

Basically, the Spades are a rock band that jams from time to time. Think of the intensity of a Neil Young solo mixed with more complicated changes and/or fast surf-rock licks and your getting some what of an idea, but... you still need to hear it to get your own idea.

I drove to peterborough for the halloween show. Glad to see Kevo was in town too. We carried a coffin around to a couple bars via a new orleans funeral. The empty coffin was followed by a group of music makers that ranged from slide whistles (ya kev) to bass drums and banjo. When the coffin finally made it back to Hot Belly Moma's James McKenty (guitar/voice for the spades) was carried via the coffin to the front of the stage where he got out and the band kicked into I Put A Spell On You (Hot Belly Moma's tradition). It was a better show than the one i had seen on friday... although James was telling me that the saturday show was spectacular and included some (in the opinion of the spades) best-versions of some of their tunes. Anyway, it was a fun weekend of music and driving and more driving.

Hopefully the spades will get a tour together soon. They usually play in ottawa around once a month, so if you live in the area keep your ears open.

  4. i must confess... green day got me started on guitar back in grade 8. thus i've paid them homage by picking up every damn album they put out (so i don't download music...). I have yet to grab this one though... most of the music i buy these days is indie... but i will pick this one up when i get the chance... so i'm curious to read your review...

  5. A buddy of mine from guelph told me about this band and said NOT to miss them. So i will likely be there for sure... a good band called the Constantines is playing the next night at I think Elixir. They're a great live rock show. The openning band, Jim Guthrie Band, is very good also. I've seen the JGB a couple times and both were great shows.

  6. Man... i've seen neil quite a few times but never solo acoustic!!! rrrrrr... Vancouver Island is going to be INSANE... i would quickly travel back in time and refund my Coventry ticket for that one if i could... great set list from the 15th show... journey through the past, birds, on th way home, field of opportunity!!!!!!!!, gotta stop there or i'll just list the whole damn set again. I've got lots of good quality solo neil shows/comps, but seeing him in person would be unreal. have a good time on the island.

  7. yo... i'm in my first year as well, but... i have been doing practicum and classroom work for 4 years (i was in a concurrent education program at Trent)... well, i just got back from Nero... so let's see about teaching (i have class at 9 tomorrow...).

The only advice i can say is don't get on your accociate teacher's bad side: they will be filling out your evaluatoin and you only get one... also, your associate teacher usually has a wealth of information and experience, so don't be shy about asking questions. ummm... don't go really hungover like i did a coupole times (never very fun)... jeez... what else... avoid making friends with the kids. this may sound stupid, but -especially in middle schol (7/8)- your authority in the classroom wont last long - ie. the kids may stop taking you seriously (i once had a grade 8 kid ask me to buy him beer after class...)... wash your hair now and then (maybe)... other than that... all you really need to know is just from exerience - that's probably the best advice... anyway... if you teach art class, do an activity called "drawing to music": make a mix tape of different kinds of music and get the kids to draw whatever the music makes em, only rule: sneak in at least 1 Nero tune! cheers

  8. The venue was actaully pretty nice.... great weather helps too... you could see Old Fort Henry to the left of the stage... really great atmosphere... only (minor minor) complaint would be that the field had dips in it, so sometimes the stage was hard to see, but the sound was decent where i was standing... Most early bands only played for about 20 min... oh yeah, Dan Akroyd (mr. ghostbuster himself) played harmonica on Locked In The Trunk Of A Car, nothing very memorable though... I think Dan should stick to the hoagies and leave the harmonica to the real musicians

  9. I caught the Spades, Sadies, and Hip yesterday at theh Across The Causeway. I skipped the other bands though... not really a big matt good fan.

Anyway, if your a Spades fan this was a great (albeit short) set of music. Gord Sinclair from the Hip played acoustic on a couple tunes. For a full review of this set and the setlist check out my review at thespades.ca on the message board.

I had to leave part way during the sadies show to meet people (always a drag). It was okay, but i prefer seeing the sadies in a smaller venue (i'll get to this later).

The Hip were pretty good. The set up until the encores was pretty much standard for the summer... although Locked int eh Trunk of a Car was a nice treat. The encores were great. Key track: Escape Is At Hand... (2nd encore... wow, one of my favs and i did not expect to hear it at all),. I'm not the Hip fanatic some people are, but going to Hip shows is all about rockin out and havin a couple beers... plus i love all the Canadian flags people bring.

I was pretty burnt by the time the Sadies/Unintended show rolled around. I got there right when the Unintended's Greg Keelor (lead guitar for Blue Rodeo) was in the middle of Mr.Young's Are You Ready For The Country... so i quickly caught a second wind and grabed a 50. Anyway, the Sadies show was super super good. Cant recall the whole set, but there was a good mix of old and new tunes. The new tunes of their new cd Favourite Colours are strong live. Greg Keelor made it back for the encore. Again, really great show. Decent crowd too. Anyway, sorry i can't be more specific... definitely catch teh Sadies on this tour. If there as good as they were last night it will be money well spent.

I have new respect for Elixir now. The sound was really on for the Sadies and I was really enjoying the atmosphere last night. Cheers.
