    CURATED BY RYHNA THOMPSON

Ryhna Thompson, one of the chief brains behind the whole Moondata operation, takes the reigns on this LABproject to assemble a line-up that can find that place where warm tones meet harsh sounds, where beautiful melodies meet dissonant rock. Her choice of horns and woodwinds (trumpet, french horn and bass clarinet) and musicians, many of whom will be contributing to a choir of voices, are sure to create an excite an exciting collaboration between a number of musicians making a stop in Montreal in between their own tours.

    CURATED BY VID COUSINS

It’s time to put VID COUSINS in the front line. Vid has been behind the soundboard, engineering the majority of LABprojects over it’s 4 year span. Not only that, but he has had a large part in shaping the studio sound of Moondata, currently mixing and producing the upcoming SEVENS PROJECT album. Having only moved here from the UK a little over 4 years ago, Vid has quickly become a highly sought after engineer and producer. He has worked alongside many artists, engineers and producers including Al Fisch (Bjork) and Charlie Francis (REM, Hi Llamas). His last studio project was for AMON TOBIN’S newest album, which he engineered. He also mixed KID KOALA’s most recent album “Your Mom’s Favorite DJâ€. His rich live-music experience led to a role heading the production of tours for NINJA TUNE and SQUAREPUSHER. In 2005, Vid helped AMON TOBIN develop the Chaos Theory surround sound system with which they toured Europe and North America on numerous occasions.

For this edtion of LABprojects, Vid has put together a a group of minimalist and electronics inspired performers. Promising such things as prepared drums, and unusual harmonic combinations, Vid is sure to both surprise, enlighten and scare us with the creations of his musical mind.

Moondata Productions’ LABprojects starts afresh in September 2006 with a series of specially curated shows. This season, Moondata is inviting various artists to curate the showcases, keeping along with theme of improvisation and experimentation. Some of the curators of this season will be Jason Sharp, Patrick Watson, Moment Factory and more.  The kick-off show is curated by Moondata’s own The Objects aka Matt Lederman (LABproject creator) and Vid Cousins.  With influences ranging from Steve Reich, The Meters, Terry Gilliam, Peter Cook & Dudley Moore, & Elegant Hotdog, this duo of sound shifters and shapers (Vid and Matt are both live and studio sound engineers) have invited some fantastic musicians to join in: notably Stef Schneider – the poly-rythmic drummer from Bell Orchestre, and from Toronto, Leon Kingstone –of Synthetic Folk Hero fame.

Moondata Productions’ LABprojects series is in its 4th year of bringing Montreal talent together for unique collaborations. Since 2003, LABprojects has played host to over 100 Montreal musicians, DJs and VJs. Members of Montreal’s electronic music community (Sixtoo, Kid Koala, P-Love, Killa-Jewel), indie music scene (Patrick Watson, Elizabeth Powell, members of Donkeys, Unicorns, Besnard Lakes, Stars) soul funk collectives (Ark of Infinity, Kalmunity), jazz groups (Joshua Rager, Miles Perkins, Jim & Chet Doxas, members of IKS) and improv instrumental circles (Sam Shalabi, Harris Newman, Torngat, Bell Orchestre) have all graced the stage at O Patro Vys in a variety of formations. The music has ranged from sonic explosions to hauntingly beautiful moods, from upbeat grooves to minimal ambient textures.  Regardless of the lineup, this “deftly curated†series has consistently amazing results.

  10. It's close to that time of year again. Last year's broken hearted, border line cynical LOVE?project is replaced this year by the borderline cheese of LOVE!project.  This year’s Valentine Edition of LABprojects puts some of Montreal’s most musical couples together for the first time.  It won’t necessarily be a musicians  'swinger’s club' on stage, but this collaboration promises some high energy dynamics, some doey-eyed interaction (Duets! Threesomes! & more!) and a highly unique instrumentation that includes a classical harpist, a jazz guitarist and a members of some of Montreal’s best indie-rock bands!  God-damn it, even the VJs and DJs are locked into coupledom. Special guests & more!

Moondata Productions’ LABprojects series is heading into its 3rd year of bringing Montreal talent together for unique collaborations. Since 2002, LABprojects has played host to over 100 Montreal musicians, DJs and VJs. Members of Montreal’s electronic music community (Sixtoo, Kid Koala, P-Love, naw), indie music scene (Patrick Watson, Elizabeth Powell, members of Donkeys, Unicorns, Besnard Lakes, Stars) soul funk collectives (Ark of Infinity, Kalmunity), jazz groups (Joshua Rager, Miles Perkins, Jim & Chet Doxas, members of IKS) and improv instrumental circles (Sam Shalabi, Harris Newman, members of Torngat, Bell Orchestre) have all graced the stage at O Patro Vys in a variety of formations. The music has ranged fromsonic explosions to hauntingly beautiful moods, from upbeat grooves to minimal ambient textures. Regardless of the lineup, this “deftly curated†series has consistently amazing results.

This year, Moondata Productions is trying something new.

Breaking from the normal focus on a variety of individuals, Moondata is inviting bands to participate amongst other invited musicians for a full night of organized improvisation. Each show will maintain its focus on collaborations between 7-8 musicians on stage, but will add in a short set which highlights the invited group. To start off this new season, Montreal’s electrodance Moog sensations Unireverse will be the featured band. Their blend of synth ambience, dance beats and ability to improvise on a dime (they just finished collaborating with Can’s Damo Suzuki) make their set a perfect match to the organized mayhem that is a Moondata event. With the addition of Dr. Noh’s Andrew King (summoning the ghost of Miles Davis’s trumpet) and Jaime Thompson’s (Unicorns, Islands) dance oriented drumming, this night should see some sparks fly!

  12. Hi,

I'm assuming Montreal is categorized as East here, as there's no Central forum.

Some of you may know about this already, some not. My production company/record label, Moondata, hosts a monthly series of improvised music, featuring Montreal musicians in various configurations. Over 100 musicians, VJs and DJs have participated over the last two years, coming up with a variety of focused collaborative songs.

We recently released a CD compilation - Satellite: LABprojects 2003-2005 - of some of these performances. You can check it out at www.moondataproductions.com

However, this is to announce the first show of the new LABproject season...
