Although I like Eckstein (who has proven to hit for avg.) I really liked to see John MacDonald at work in the field.

Saw Big Sugar a few years back and Pocket Dwellers opened. After P/D set they said this band gave them nothing. No stage space, back line etc.

Pocket Dwellers blew them off the stage (although I cannot think of a band that they would not blow off the stage), and Gordie in particular was resentful and cruel. F*** Grady! Donate your $1 ticket that they deserve to a woman's shelter or food bank. It will be put to better use

Basically I run the F&B (restaurant and banquets)at the largest and most fully integrated winery in Prince Edward County. I have a bar (inside a winery) where I charge high prices for rich people to eat fresh "County" food. I get on average $50 more per person because I "cook" (basically let fresh ingredients do their work) in front of them. What they do not realize is if I can send my sous-chef into the woods (and i feel like a douche for it) for "woodland mushrooms" and give the dish a really gay name, vwaaaalaaaaa!!!! Suckas! Although the chow is pretty killer!

The banter WAS great' date=' even though I think half the place was worried that if somebody said the wrong thing he'd march off. He did seem to need more piano in his monitor every time he sat down there, and he knocked his fist on the top of it to signal his monitor guy a few times. His guitar tech handed him a Strat and some idiot hollered "Let It Ride", and I thought it was all over, but then they actually played Let It Ride. But there was immediately some problem with the Strat, it had a capo on it and either the tech had given it to him in the wrong tuning or it was out of tune or the capo was on the wrong fret or something and he was visibly frustrated; he sang the first verse while tuning back up and ditched the Strat right after that tune.

He had been giving his monitor guy big sweeping hand signals all night and was still visibly frustrated, so sometime around the Strat incident (I think as he was handing the guitar back to his tech) he had some conversation with either the tech or somebody else sidestage, and then said something to the guys in the band. I was sitting right by the soundboard and during the next song an older guy comes out to talk to the FOH guy and I couldn't hear what he said, but at the end they both kind of raised their eyebrows as if to say, "Can you believe that?". Anyway then I looked over by the stage and the much younger monitor tech had moved over and was standing against the wall and an older guy was running the monitor board. So my hypothesis is that he had a new monitor guy step in mid-show, which is kind of crazy.

In any event, though, it was a great, great show. Those descriptions of the banter only really touch upon the themes, in reality they were much longer and drawn out; looking forward to hearing that recording.

Oh also, I realize now that Goodnight Rose was in that first chunk of tunes and that's actually from the new record, so I was mistaken in saying they were all Jacksonville/Cold Roses tunes. I thought last night's version was particularly awesome, though, because it was so subdued and dynamic. That's really a good way to describe the show all around - dynamic. They seem to have really worked on their arrangements and it shows. Was anybody else expecting a piano player, though? I thought they had a guy with them on that acoustic tour.[/quote']

That idiot that shouted "Let it ride" was sitting infront of me the whole time either talking loudly to his girlfriend/to his cell phone/ or texting. None of these communications were about the show. I f*ckin' hated that guy for 2 hours!

They have tonnes of room. Our little family has a 4 door hatch back and I cannot say enough about it. They are also cheaper than the Civic. There is a bit of a curve to "learning" to drive it though. What I mean by this is that as you are driving, one of the computer screen features (which can be very distracting at first) is that you can watch your consumption of fuel in almost real time. Use the cruise! It'll be your best friend......except on hills. With any vehicle you are going to use more power->fuel going up an incline. But if you are controlling the throttle as opposed to the car, you might get there a bit slower but it'll save gas. I'm never in that much of a hurry anyway. If you get a nice stretch of flat highway it is not that hard to get between 4.2L and 4.8L of consumption per 100km. Also, as far as getting it serviced, next to Subaru, I couldn't find a better extended warranty. Nor have I had to use it thus far with over 45,000km. Give this car a second look!

So I just added to the "Jim Bryson joins Weakerthans for tour" post. Remember the Post Hardcore (Jawbox/Burning Airlines) Math Rock (June of 44/shotmaker), screamo (Pecola), and emo (when it was good(!))-(braid/Jets to Brazil/Cap'n Jazz that was the sound track to our punk rock lives (if you are currently 26-35ish). I would love to hear some band names I have not heard in a long time if anyone is so obliging. Sorry I'm livin' in the past today.

All Night Christian Rollerskate is STILL, to this day, one of my fav records. This reminds me, we need a "Back in the day" forum. Remember shotmaker? A great great GREAT ACT! I always took pride in the fact that "before" they were from Ottawa, they were from Brighton (my home town 5,00 ppl) in fact I used to date a girl who lived next to the barn they used to practice in. In fact, Nick's mom used to own the local record store. A lovely English lady. Their tune Uninhibited still sends chills up my spine. Matt also had a great band "post" shotmaker called Three Penny Opera with a ridiculous second drummer named Andy (Last name?).

I would have opted for Plaskett/Elkas had I been in Capital City. I saw Caution Jam in '97, '98, '99 (blah blah blah) and unless I'm mistaken, The Dead haven't written any new songs to cover. Lemme guess (insert drum roll) an Althea opener. I don't mean to sound "too" negative.....but shit gets old. Especially rehashed cover songs that are not even attempted to be explored in a new and way by the artist/musicians playing them.

Pretty vague question (I didn't mean to sound condesending there), but it depends on the sound you and your mates are trying to achieve. To quote Mike Watt....."Ball Hog or Tugboat?" Are you a slapper, jazzhead, situational, or playing the part of the dude from Crazy Horse?

I'm just guessing (someone correct me here).....but I bet you could get by with a WAY smaller wattage combo/ head and cabinet ((cheaper $$$ than huge) try AMPEG...they normally sound lovely) that has a kick ass sound that YOU are looking for and buy a nice microphone (which will come in huge when you establish yourself and start playing the ARENA gigs)......Sennheiser has nice Dynamic Mics for instrument amps that won't "kill" your pocket book. Just remember ANYTHING musical that has QUALITY(I know that's relative) is gonna cost you. At least as far as my income goes.

It's really too bad you have to "rush" to get this shit together. It seems to me a great sound is built over time

I agree. It was much more mellow and spacey-jazzy than The Way Up. Metheny, himself, was definitely more subdued on stage.

That drummer may be the greatest drummer I've ever seen. What was his name, Jason Ballard?

His name is Jeff Ballard and yes he was rediculous! Was right up there with Bill Stewart in my opinion. Although Bill plays quite a small kit. It was nice to see the Manzer Picasso Guitar too. That thing weighs almost 15 lbs!

I think it sucks for musicians. As an example Shania Twain got her start in bars when she was a child and those gigs developed her skills. I’m sure there have been many well known artists that have gone this route. Famous or not there are a lot of underage musicians trying make a move. I was playing in bars when I was 16 and I really don’t feel age should make a difference in the entertainment industry.

I assume by skills you mean her ability to meet dirty old men. Becuase had she not met dirty old Mutt Lang........she'd still be slutin' it up in Timmins.

A "family band" is one thing. I think if the parent is actually up on stage with you, and is watching out for you (I'm sure there are some who are just getting hammered) that should be the grey area. When I was 13-14 years of age, "cutting my teeth"......I didn't ever think of the "bar" scene. Bars generally PAY real money to cover bands. I was just happy to be able to perform songs that were not popular covers at the time. So I "cut my teeth" in town halls and church basements on Friday and Saturday nights. Although I was playing Eric's Trip, Dinosaur Jr. and seBADoh covers (and some of what I am sure to be some of the worst indie rock originals ever!), so the bar scene would not have wanted me in my small town anyway. Whatever, I'm still happy to say that J Mascis taught me more about guitar playing than Bobby Baker (no offence, I'm sure he's a good guy) or some other dude who has his/her songs mangled by countless weekend rockers. There is something to be said too, for a parent who depends on their kids cute song and dance routine to make a living. Jean-Benet Ramsey(sp?) for instance.

....oh and P.S. I'm very happy to see that the guitar playin' cat who frequents this board from Chameleon Project has taken the higher road. If I was him I'd take Kung out to the shed and give him PEI Punk's celery stick treatment from the creepy guy's on jambands.ca post to defend my art.

The friend of mine is a tough chick and she's been through some heavy shit and this was intolerable. If you want to make light of it go for it but you're the one who looks like a massive fucking tool. We wanted to stick around and see KJ Sawka, that's why we came and paid $20 - instead we left about a half hour after we came because as mentioned the venue was over capacity and the capacity that was there was whacked way past their due date.

Case in point in front of the venue some serious Om wookie rolled up to us and the first thing he wanted to inform us of was that he'd just done a big line of K and Coke. Way to go Guy! I'm really proud of you, way to put yourself in the Hole then try and crawl out of it!

As far as the band well clearly despite the fact that I'm a full time music journalist, I don't drink, I've been writing about improvisational music in Canada since before jambands.ca existed- not to mention I've been a head for longer than almost all this board- clearly some believe I am still not entitled to an opinion.

Irrespective of the lame scene we dealt with in terms of predatory K'd out tweakers- not so much offensive as massively annoying (like most of you for instance)- the music was truly derivative.

I have never enjoyed Chameleon Project. The drummer is marginally good, the bass players concepts are pretty weak and lacking and the guitarist is a fucking joke. A pedal board and some dude playing guitar. I really really tried to just get into it and enjoy but they had no concept of how to build the tension and release of a Break- which is what Jungle, Breaks and Hip Hop are based on. Instead they meander about touching on a variety of faded styles and pander to their audience who is so touched in the head from the copious quantities of animal tranquilizers that they'd meow at the moon.

I'm still confused. Do you like the band or not. Please be more specific when writing future reviews.

P.S. Animal tranquilizers have had their place. Just look at Keith Moon's best work

On a musical level we both agreed that Chameleon Projects grooves and breaks were derivative and lacklustre and that that band should lay off the chems and the electronics. That's not jungle or drum and bass it's wanky drum and bass grooves, way too much effects on a sh!t guitar style and basically a really annoying band with little going for it. The fact that the Grateful Dead's legacy is somehow insulted by this group deeply offends me.

Tried to make one a while back and here's what I came up with. Pretty close. The problem with cook books and recipes in general is, it doesn't matter if two people follow the same recipe to a "T" they never taste the same. I wouldn't sweat the book therefore.

8 cups veg stock

1.5 riesling

1 spanish onion, chopped

1 stalk celery, chopped (for Brad M)

6 cloves garlic, minced

6 leeks, sliced, washed, soaked and washed again

1 tsp thyme fresh

1 tsp marjoram fresh, or oregano (dried. oregano is the only spice EVER that is better dried than fresh)

3 tbsp butter

3 tbsp flour

4 cups cream or 3 cups Newfie (carnation canned) milk

3/4 lbs emmental or good stilton cheese

Bring stock and wine to a boil. Reduce the heat and add onion, carrot and celery after sauteeing. Get the pans brown bits too. Add garlic. Melt butter in microwave and add flour mix together well and set aside. Add thyme and marjoram to pot and turn off heat to step. (you don't want to cook fresh herbs too long on high heat. The flavour will be lost)

Add beurre manie (butter and flour......just as a roux but after the fact instead of before) mixture to separate stock pot on medium heat. Stir in cream and add cheese SLOWLY, sirring constantly until thickened. Ladel soup into cheese mix a bit at a time stirring constantly. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Oh and since this soup has quote un-qoute "fine" flavours and ingredients in it (i.e. blue cheese).....puree the fucker, and I mean PUREED! (strain through cheesecloth if you have to). It'll make for a way way way way better finish. That being said, when you have dinner guest coming......strain everything! Just my opinion.

*IF, you haven't added cheese to a soup before, and are not confident, try adding a little cornstarch/water mix as a stablizer.
