"I don't think I realised the radio had more than one station til I was 11 or 12," Basia Bulat says. At the family home in Toronto, the dial was always fixed to the local oldies station: Motown, Stax, The Beatles, Beach Boys and Sam Cooke. While her mother hunted for someone to do the dishes, Basia and her younger brother Bobby would hide with a radio or tape player, happily rattled by all that song.
Since the age of three, Basia has been sitting on piano stools and trying to hammer things out. It started with her piano-teacher mum, but along the way Basia's picked up guitar, autoharp, banjo, ukelele, sax and flute. In high-school her instrument was the upright bass a lone girl among "eight-foot-tall guys, goofing off with the tubas". There's a sense of play that still suffuses her music, jostling under the songs of regret and love, want and joy. When her brother began in his teens to play drums with punk bands, Basia would be there with her demerara voice, joining happily in the jam. When she left for university in London, Ontario, musicians began to drop by her downtown apartment. Many nights were spent with these classically-trained friends, laughing and singing, and together they made a glad, bright noise.
For the summer of 2006, Basia went to live in Montreal. Through friends she met Howard Bilerman, an engineer and co-owner of the famed Hotel 2 Tango studio. Basia cashed some student loans to record with Bilerman in one of the final sessions at the original H2T site, but by the third day she had lost her voice. It was ultimately these rough early takes, hoarse with excitement, that formed the bulk of Oh My Darling. Initially the recordings were meant only as an "audible memory" of the time Basia spent with friends in London and Montreal: "We liked playing together so much, and I just wanted to remember that." But Bilerman was smitten with the songs, with Basia and her band, and he began to write to friends at labels, friends with music-blogs, anyone who might pay attention. For despite the original intention, these tracks are breathless, thirsty, dislodged from dreary nostalgia. There are strings, yes, and acoustic guitar, but also a frantic drum-kit gallop; the influence of the spirits of wild Jeff Magnum, big-voiced Odetta, Emily Dickinson and all those boisterous soul-music singles. It's this spark that sets Basia Bulat apart from the raft of typical singer-songwriters, and also what attracted the interest of Geoff Travis and Britain's legendary Rough Trade label who released Oh My Darling in Europe and Japan in the spring of 2007.
Since then Basia and her band have toured central Canada and Europe, sharing stages with the likes of the Great Lake Swimmers, Julie Doiron, Sondre Lerche, and The Veils, leaving a trail of new fans and happy critics along the way. In mid-2007 a Canadian deal was inked with Hayden's Hardwood Records, preceding a Western Canada tour with Final Fantasy this fall. Oh, My Darling is a pet project no longer, but Basia's ambitions are unchanged from those early days of that tiny apartment: "I love songs that I can sing along to," Basia says, and then she corrects herself, balling her hand into a fist. "No, songs that you want to sing along to."

blazer is an indie sextet currently gaining momentum and winning fans amongst Ottawa musical veterans and hipsters alike. They are known for high-energy live shows that can set even the most jaded toes tapping. Their synth-infused sound recalls The Eurythmics and Pet Shop Boys, while their complex guitar riffs and danceable drum beats are reminiscent of The Killers and Coldplay.
Having played with Canadian talent which ranges from Ruby Coast to Woodhands, and at venues like the Iheartmusic festival in 2008, blazer has spent the better part of 2009 finishing up their debut album. Alone like an Ocean, which was recorded at Raven Street Studios and Dave's Drum Shop, is set for a December 2009 release.
Their first single, Rooftop, has had both college and mainstream radio play. Currently, they are writing new material and playing shows that promise more sweaty dance-rock that will make you thank god it's Friday.
An acclaimed five piece who pour their emotions into every track, Silver Starling is composed of Marcus Paquin, Marika Anthony-Shaw, Liam O’Neil, Gab Lambert and Peter X. The group has quickly found its way onto critics’ radars and their highly anticipated self-titled debut – mixed by Paquin and Peter Katis (Interpol, The National) -- will be released in Canada on September 22 and the U.S. on October 20.
Canadian audiences have already been won over by the group’s brand of earnest and energizing rock, which earned them a deal with Toronto label Last Gang Records (New Pornographers, Metric and MSTRKRFT). The band’s moving songwriting and hummable melodies have garnered comparisons to everyone from The Beatles to Jeff Buckley to the Arcade Fire. The last one shouldn’t be surprising, as Anthony-Shaw is a touring member of that Montreal juggernaut, and Paquin -- a recording engineer by trade – re-mastered their eponymous debut EP. Since April, Paquin has also been working as an engineer on their upcoming record.
Raised in the west part of the Montreal island, Paquin became obsessed with the Beatles’ Abbey Road at age four. He focused on music full time after a brief stint studying engineering, and eventually received a degree in jazz guitar and a Master’s in recording engineering from McGill University. He went on to work as a recording engineer for various labels and studios across Montreal.
Upon his first performances as a solo singer/songwriter, however, he felt something was missing. “I was writing tunes and trying them out at open mics and cafes,†he says, “but I started quickly seeing the limitations of that idiom. It wasn’t as fun to be on my own.†After attending a show put on by a free jazz trio one night in 2007, he was impressed by the group’s drummer and introduced himself. “I made an unsolicited approach, trying not to look like an obsessed fan,†he remembers. “I told him I liked his playing, and that we should jam.†The drummer was O’Neil, and the pair began playing together and performing as a duo at local bars later that year.
Anthony-Shaw, a violin, viola and keyboard player -- and Paquin’s wife -- became the natural third member of the group, though at first she juggled her time between Silver Starling and playing viola on Arcade Fire’s Neon Bible tour. “Liam and I were working on the songs,†Paquin says, “and she would come back for a week at a time and jam with us, or just lend an objective ear.†A friend of Paquin’s and bassist for We Are Star 69, Peter X, offered to record with the pair and he was eventually added to the line-up. Silver Starling has also added Gab Lambert to their touring line-up, who plays guitar and banjo and interjects a sparkling personality into the mix.
Silver Starling, the group’s lush first album, is a tribute to a longtime friend of Paquin’s, who was stricken with pancreatic cancer and passed away in September of 2008. “He’s the glue that holds all of this material together,†says Paquin. “He is one of my oldest friends, and his sickness sparked a lot of emotions in me.†Tracks like “Ghosts†and “Love and a Broken Heart†display a rare feat in songwriting, balancing difficult realities with poignant optimism. This promising new band’s first work is full of sincere, sonically-rich tracks, and such nuance is at the core of Silver Starling’s appeal.
Organ Eyes are Sami Secord on vocals and guitar and Cameron Steacy on guitar. They describe themselves as "just two relaxed people making some relaxed tunes".

Born in Mogadishu, Somalia, just as the civil unrest that rocked the country was beginning, rapper K'NAAN spent the early years of his life trying to avoid death and listening to the hip-hop records sent to him from America by his father, who had left Somalia earlier. When K'NAAN (whose name means "traveler" in Somali) was 13 his family were able to leave their homeland moving to Rexdale, Ontario, where there was a large Somali community. As soon as his English started improving, he began rapping, and in 10th grade he dropped out of school and traveled around North America for two years, performing occasionally. K'NAAN was able to perform at the United Nations' 50th anniversary concert in 1999, where he used his platform to publicly criticize the United Nations' handling of the Somali crisis in the 1990s. Youssou N'Dour, was so impressed by the young MC's performance and courage that he invited him to contribute to his 2001 album “Building Bridgesâ€, a project through which K'NAAN was able to tour the world. He released “The Dusty Foot Philosopher†in 2005, and was followed with tour spots with Mos Def and Talib Kweli, as well as a performance at Live 8. In 2007 the live album “On the Road†appeared and “Troubadour†was released to critical acclaim earlier this year.

“One of the most complex and exciting stand-ups working in America today. Like an idealistic hippy stuck inside the body of a testosterone-pumped US marine. He’s been likened to late great US comedians such as Bill Hicks and Sam Kinison, but although he exhibits a similar brand of furious indignation, his observations and revelations are entirely his own. His angry, insightful act is an absorbing battle between his raw libertarian instincts and his refined liberal sensibilities.â€
--William Cook, The Guardian
Joe Rogan was the host of the hugely successful reality show, “Fear Factor,†for six seasons on NBC. Prior to “Fear Factorâ€, Rogan played Joe Garrelli, the resident electrician on the hit NBC comedy series “NewsRadio.â€
Since 2002, Rogan has provided color commentary for the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) on Pay Per View and Spike Television and also hosts the syndicated show, “UFC Wired.†Rogan’s passion for MMA began with martial arts practice at the age of 13. Within two years, the Boston native earned a black belt and soon became the Massachusetts full contact Tae Kwon Do champion four consecutive years. By the age of 19, Rogan won the US Open Tae Kwon Do Championship and as lightweight champion went on to beat both the middle and heavyweight title-holders to obtain the Grand Championship.
Rogan’s other true love is standup comedy. As a standup comedian for over 20 years Joe Rogan has honed an inquisitive and intense comedic style. He exudes a mad joy for life in all its insanity and revels in the art of standup comedy to explore the world with raw honesty. This has made him a national headliner, a favorite performer at the prestigious Just For Laughs Festival in Montreal and a guest on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,†“Late Night with Conan O’Brien†and “Jimmy Kimmel Live.†In 2000, Rogan released his debut comedy album, “I’m Gonna Be Dead Someday,†on Warner Bros. Records. In April of 2007 he released a follow-up CD, “Shiny Happy Jihad†on Comedy Central Records. Rogan’s debut DVD “Joe Rogan Live†aired on Showtime in the spring of 2007. His second comedy special “Talking Monkeys in Space†premiered on Spike TV in June of 2009.
Rogan resides in Los Angeles and regularly performs stand-up locally, nationally, and internationally when he hits Ottawa Friday March 5, 2010 at Bronson Centre.
