Snailhouse is an ongoing collection of songs by Mike Feuerstack. Obscuring the distinction between a singer-songwriter and a rock band, snailhouse is always a labour of love. Over the course of three albums, an EP and a host of 7"s and compilations, Snailhouse has garnered a very loyal following in the underground music world.
Snailhouse has attracted collaborators as diverse and renowned as Julie Doiron, Dave Draves, Aaron Booth, members of Arcade Fire, Bell Orchestre, Maritime and most recently, The Acorn.
Feuerstack is also a founding member of the Wooden Stars, who besides offering four of their own acclaimed full length CDs since the mid-nineties, were awarded a Juno for best alternative album for their collaboration with Julie Doiron (curiously titled Julie Doiron and the Wooden Stars).
Fans of Snailhouse come to expect many things - unique song-craft, stunning musicianship, and a lyrical prowess that is deceptive in its simplicity. From the bare acoustic recordings of (1994's) "Fine" to the grandoise pop experiments of "The Opposite is Also True" to the subtle, skewed soul of "The Silence Show", Snailhouse takes genres both new and old and weaves them into something that can never be listened to the same way twice.
This show is the Ottawa CD release for "Lies on the Prize", out on Unfamiliar Records.
Mike lives in Montreal.
"On Mike Feuerstack’s new album, his songs are at last given the summer they deserve — which is to say that they sound great, that the production (by Arcade Fire’s Jeremy Gara) imbues them with just the right amount of exhaust and bonfire smoke. “I try to make sense of the voice I heard,†Snailhouse sings, “a beautiful mosquito, an ugly bird.†They’re folk songs for city dwellers, for places where the streetlights never turn off, where flowers poke through asphalt." - Sean Michaels, National Post

Following up a sold out Black Sheep Inn performance this weekend, Jim Bryson has an equally special and intimate follow up planned for the South side of the Ottawa River in the beautiful oak paneled sanctuary of the 150 year-old Gothic revival styled heritage site at the corner of Laurier and Elgin.
Jim Bryson’s songs are a cultivated mix of hope and doubt, longing and uncertainty, and are flush with endearing tales culled from the town he calls home. They have been described as “folk songs played with rock instruments†and “rock songs played with folk instruments.†Truthfully, they almost consistently lilt and sway between the two.
Bryson's previous records -- The Occasionals (2000) and The North Side Benches (2003) -- have gathered steam as Jim continues to travel and play, on his own and as singer/keyboardist/guitarist for Kathleen Edwards, Howe Gelb and most recently the Weakerthans. Over the past two years, he has had the opportunity to play all over North America and Europe, appearing on the Late Show with David Letterman, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and even at Farm Aid 2005.
His third release, Where the Bungalows Roam, is certainly his warmest and most hushed record to date. The album was churned out throughout 2006, working with Dave Draves and Jarrett Bartlett (Kathleen Edwards, Julie Doiron, Howe Gelb) at Little Bullhorn Prods in Ottawa, as well as Chris Shreenan-Dyck (Blue Rodeo, The Sadies, Jon Langford) at Blue Rodeo's Woodshed Studio.
Bungalows leaves the bright guitars of Bryson's past work behind for soft strumming; strained vocals are replaced with whispered confessions. This record is as direct as they come, and Jim's lyrics have nowhere to hide. Nor should they. Bryson's gift for capturing a mood or a feeling is one of
his most praised strengths. Whether it's coping with the winter weather, self-confidence or general restlessness, Jim finds a way to make his songs ours. Enjoy!
The Constantines'Â Steven Lambke is back with the sophomore release of his alias, Baby Eagle. Featuring contributions by Shotgun and Jaybird as well as Julie Doiron, No Blues is another delicate album of folk gems from a Canadian indie veteran.
No Blues is the album title, the title track and the first song written for the album. The song appears here in two very different versions: the first, a solo performance based around the voice and strummed acoustic guitar of Baby Eagle, and the second, a full band take featuring friend and Polaris Prize-nominated singer Julie Doiron on lead vocals. Nearly every song that follows is titled as a blues: ‘Rainwater Blues’, ‘Census-Taking Blues’, ‘Morning Light Blues’, ‘Baby Blues’, ‘Resurrection Blues’. Even the instrumental ‘Blueberry Blues’ is so called. But this is clearly not a blues record, and not meant to be taken as such. It is, after all, called No Blues.
It’s hard to watch Baby Eagle sing his folk songs live and not think about early-Bob Dylan for a moment. The posture, slowly shifting his weight from left to right, as the harmonica rests patiently on his shoulders. Dylan turned his back on folk for The Band and rock ‘n’ roll – Baby Eagle has reversed the cycle by trading slicing rock for the honesty and anonymousness of folk music. No blues.

Hawksley Workman, poet, producer, and peerless performer, has been a critical fave since his 1999 debut, evolving from the slight, pin-striped oddball with an acclaimed diamond voice, to the panoramic, guitar-punishing superstar with no performance limits. Catch him live to luxuriate in songs from his upcoming album, Between the Beautifuls— released this January 29, 2008 —and also to hear music from his catalogue of ten albums.
