Do you like the Flecktones/Grisman style of bluegrass/jazz fusion? If yes then I'd bet you'll enjoy this show, happening this weekend, the night after the free Bela Fleck show in Queens park @ Luminato!
-
With the G8 and G20 summits lurking right around the corner,
hiding behind a billion dollar wall of cops, armor, and 'non-lethal weapons' that our tax dollars paid for,
thought it might be a good time to put a list of songs and albums together appropriate to the occasion...
-
If anyone was under the illusion that Ottawa would not fully harmonize our copyright laws with Washington's, maybe its time you started learning about the SPP?
-
You're welcome. Glad you found it interesting. Likewise I hope others are willing to contribute to this conversation, its pretty much our best chance to participate democratically on the topics the G8 and G20 people will be discussing behind that wall of a billion dollars worth of cops and guns.

Nobody wants to comment about ^ that video ^ eh?

In relation, I heard a soundbite on CBC radio a couple days ago wherein the speaker was explaining that 'the days for Canadians sharing files on P2P neworks are numbered.' It was quite the arrogant statement- not sure who it was but the guy must have been a Tory.

Last time I went searching the web for lyrics/tab resources was about ten years ago and there wasnt too much to choose from. Nowadays theres a ton of sites to choose from, some more useful than others. Post your favorite ones here!

strobe tuners have been around for a long time
-
Umm, that Bela show sounds like its going to kick ass! Hope I can make it!

If staying in key is what you desire, you're better off using a tuning fork or set of pitch pipes. That way you are still teaching/relying on your ear to notice the difference or similarities in pitch.
tangent side story: Bill Monroe NEVER used an electric tuner. He would tune his mandolin to his own voice everyday... that way, on days where his voice could hit a fractionally higher top note, the whole band tuned up accordingly. Thats the way the father of bluegrass did it... but to each their own.

Thanks for the heads up.
No MMW this year on mine and NewRider's birthday??
Apparently not- and thanks to control-freak antics of the douchebag jambands promoters of Toronto, no afterparty planned for this year.

Like bluegrass and old time music?
The Saturday Saints release their first album, Hand-Me-Downs, tonight, Friday June 18th, at the Sixth Gallery, 1642 Queen St. West, in the heart of Parkdale, Toronto. Two shows tonight: one at 7:30 for the early crowd (kids welcome), and one at 10 for the late crowd (big kids welcome).
The Saturday Saints are Danny Simmons on banjo and Kristin Cavoukian on guitar. They both sing up a storm.
Kristin has been sitting in with Crazy Strings, the Foggy Hogtown Boys, The Stagger Lees, and other Toronto area bluegrass bands for years, she's been pickin and grinning since she was just a knee-high. Danny has too many musical references to list!
Special guests (who also appear on the album) include Sam Petite on bass, James McKie on fiddle, Rob Fenton on dobro, and Chris Van Sickle (all the way from Victoria, BC) on piano.
Cover: $10, or $20 with cd.
Go see them!

If you're in town tonight, broke or too cheap to see Avett Bros. but you feel like seeing an awesome new local bluegrass band, The Saturday Saints are playing a free show in Parkdale at Not My Dog, on Queen West.
Their debut CD releases later this month (June 18th) so tonight is your last chance to catch them before their popularity takes them onto larger more expensive venues. Featuring Kristin Cavoukian and Danny Simmons singing and playing their hearts out, Sam Petite sitting in on bass.
Kristin Has been sitting in with Crazy Strings, the Foggy Hogtown Boys, The Stagger Lees, and other Toronto area bluegrass bands for years.

Our media (and Israeli media) fail to show how many Israelis stand in solidarity with Palestinians, but they never fail to cover the story when it degenerates into bloodshed and violence.
If Fort Chipewyan warriors fired rockets into Fort McMurray, and the Canadian Army went into Fort Chip with guns blazing, casualties piling up, then would Canadians finally take a stand and speak out against the silent war against the indigenous people of Canada?
I know many Canadians who claim solidarity with the injustices faced by Palestinians, and the actions others (Rachel Corrie etc) have taken to address their plight, yet at the same time we stay mostly silent and uninformed, turning a blind eye to the plight of indigenous North Americans in our own backyard.
Why is the land theft of all of British Colombia, or the silent chemical poisoning of Fort Chipewyan residents not considered newsworthy, whereas the violent standoff in Caledonia received constant coverage? Same for Dudley George? Oka. Etc. Etc.
Sad to realize that it still takes violence or the threat of violence for an unresolved issue to get deserving MainStreamMedia attention. It would be nice for a change to see Canadians peacefully standing in solidarity with indigenous Canadians; rather than perpetuating 400 years of ethnocentric violence and suffering in our own backyard.
