He enabled my fledging harmonica style to emerge from a hidden place to meet the world." -- Bob Lanois EDGAR BREAU Long ago, Breau was in a band called Simply Saucer. That group’s sole LP, Cyborgs Revisited, was re-issued in 2003 by Sonic Unyon Records. It did okay, and people said nice things about it, things like "the greatest Canadian album ever" (Alternative Press), "8.5" (Pitchforkmedia) and "What more could you ask for? A cherry enema?" (Byron Coley – Spin Magazine). You can look at the Sonic Unyon web-site for more info on the Saucer, if you like. Kevin Christoff , the legendary bassist for the Saucer, accompanies Breau, as does backing vocalist, Compton Roberts. They will even do a fewold Saucer songs, if you ask them politely. 2. [color:green]Cincinnati Records Proudly Presents Saturday July 28th 8pm Doors PWYC || 19+ (Limited all-ages) || CASBAH LOUNGE, 306 King St W || 905-521-4441 JESSE DANGEROUSLY Halifax has been good to Jesse Dangerously, and Jesse Dangerously has been good to Halifax. Both an archivist of and participant in the city's hip hop scene, Dangerously has been a cheerleader at the gigs of others, a sight to behold at gigs of his own, and keeps the city in raps every Tuesday night as host of CKDU's The Pavement. He has been rewarded for all of his efforts by twice being voted Best MC in The Coast Magazine's annual Best Of Music poll (2006 and 2007). He won Urban Artist of The Year from the Music Industry Association of Nova Scotia and was nominated for the same award again in 2006, as well as Male Performer of The Year. In 2007, his song Outfox'd was nominated for an East Coast Music Award in the Rap/Urban Single Recording category. A devoted fan of 1988 to 1994 era hip hop, Dangerously's influences include the lilting hyperspeed of Chip Fu; the pop culture whirlwind of Das Efx; the indignance and unabashed political overtones of Public Enemy; the intricate rhyme schemes of Lord Finesse; and the cocky arrogance of teenaged LL Cool J or Fresh Prince. AA Wallace Brings you hip-hop brought to you by the influence of Eric's Trip, Lou Barlow, Iron & Wine and Boards of Canada Plus Guest DJ DG YOUNG spinning tunes in between sets.

  5. ...At CASBAH! [color:green]Cincinnati Records Proudly Presents Friday July 27th 9PM || 19+ (Limited all-ages) || CASBAH, 306 King St W || 905-521-4441 Tickets ($20) on Sale Monday May 7th Available at: Casbah Lounge || Dr.Disc || Sonic Unyon || Tixit.ca Cousin of renowned gangster rapper Ice Cube, Del tha Funkee Homosapien (real name Teren Delvon Jones) was born in Oakland, CA, on August 12, 1972, and got his start with Ice Cube's backing band, da Lench Mob. But Del's rap isn't as grim or violent as Ice Cube's is, in fact, he's been known to include something in his music that's far too uncommon in most rap: humor. Signed to Elektra/Asylum, Del's debut release, I Wish My Brother George Was Here, was issued in 1991 and produced by Cube and like most rap at the time, featured numerous samples of Parliament Funkadelic classics from the '70s. Del's follow-up, 1994's No Need for Alarm, was a departure musically, as Ice Cube was no longer in the production seat and the P-Funk sounds were dropped in favor of a more sophisticated, almost jazzy sound. Despite his noble experimentation, Del's sophomore effort failed commercially, as it would take four years for the rapper to plot his next move and issue another recording. Having left Elektra, Del aligned himself closely to a few fellow rapper friends, Casual and Souls of Mischief, and issued his third release overall, 1998's Future Development, for the same label as his friends, Hieroglyphics Records. 2000 saw the release of an all-new Del solo release, Both Sides of the Brain, as well as a self-titled debut release by a side-project, Deltron 3030, which saw Del join forces with both the Automator and Kid Koala. ~ Greg Prato, All Music Guide.... 6. [color:green]Cincinnati Records Proudly Presents Monday July 23rd 2007 9PM Doors, 9:45PM Show $10 || 19+ (Limited all-ages) || CASBAH, 306 King St W || 905-521-4441 THEY SHOOT HORSES DON'T THEY? (Kill Rock Stars) "They Shoot Horses, Don't They? present us with a dark and violent world where people are readily exploited for the pennies that they might bring in from a viewing audience. Marathon dances last for weeks, even months, draining their participants of self-respect and gradually turning them into the walking dead." They Shoot Horses Don't They is an 8 piece band from Vancouver, BC Canada. Their debut album “Boo Hoo Hoo Boo†is being released on Kill Rock Stars on February 21st, 2006. Their startling energetic live shows have won them listeners and even dancers throughout Canada where they have shared the stage with bands like The Unicorns and Xiu Xiu. They have a distinctive noisy oompa sound thanks to a horn section. The band has been compared to the likes of The Danielson Family, Captain Beefheart and Thinking Fellers Local 242. Lyrical themes of desperation, betrayal and hardship are brought to interesting light in this overly joyful jittery music. Extensive touring in the US and Canada is planned to support this release. “They Shoot Horses, Don’t They? sound like post-punks raised under a big top, albeit one under the direction of Igor Stravinsky or Sun Ra rather than P.T. Barnum†Boston Phoenix “It's not that often you come across a band that puts a shit-eating grin on your face so wide that you're able to swallow all the bullshit and lies and deceptions of the 21st century…†Popmatters.com SHAPES AND SIZES (Asthmatic Kitty) "Some bands that we like are Deerhoof, Animal Collective, Os Mutantes, Liars, Fiery Furnaces, The Weird Weeds, Xiu Xiu" Shapes and Sizes melodic pop inhabits a world of beauty, noise, whispers, and elusive, contradictory moods, where the dynamic of a steam piston gives way to elegiac understatement, often within one song. With three of its four members writing for the band, their repertoire is one of constant surprise, often going out on a limb, but never falling off. From Victoria, BC, Canada, but soon to call Montreal their home, Caila Thompson-Hannant, Rory Seydel, Jon Crellin and Nathan Gage have shared stages with Frog Eyes, Silver Jews, The Thermals, Architecture in Helsinki, The Blow, Apples in Stereo, The Immaculate Machine, Japanther, Chet and They Shoot Horses, Don't They?
