  1. I guess - people keep thinking I look so familiar. At least the recognise me a lot.

And yes, I'll vouch arcane finds resonant frequencies easily. It's normally not disturbing, except when one is going at 120kph down the 417 and there's already a crack present...

  2. Canada Day, eh? I'll have to check what mini-concerts are happening around downtown, but if it's anything like last year (and with the protests giving organisers no time to set up), my afternoon just might be free. I'll just make sure not to eat too much this time. [smile]

  4. Aaaaaarrrgh!! Here bradm has been doing everything but physically dragging me to Nero, I told myself I'd go to this show... and I can't, as personal deadlines due tomorrow forbid me to attend. (If I go, I have several blank pages which can't be blank.) I'm doomed to live neroless, it seems. At least I've been to Deckuf, it's as small as the Post was. I mean intimate. I saw they took out some obstruction on the left side of the stage on the ceiling (which was annoying the last time I was at the Post to see Vancouver's Orchid Highway, too many years ago now - wish they'd at least have given us a full album before disappearing).

  5. (not that my opinion matters a lot, but why not [smile] )

Saw the movie Saturday with the gf. A family’s young kids reacted pretty closely to LowRoller’s nephew, going “yuckie” or “not more smoochie stuff” with yet another Anakin/Padme forced romance scene. There were a lot of those. And both me and the gf tried not to laugh out loud at the “Sound of Music” scene. Was this deliberate??

Altogether, the movie’s viewable, and enjoyable to fans (tons of fannish references). No scene is too long, unlike the podracer videogame ad in the first movie, and they cut back and forth logically. I find many scenes could have been shortened, making for too many “oooo, ahhh” CGI effects, but that’s just me. [big Grin]

Jar Jar was actually digestable this time: non-clumsy, still naive, and on for ten minutes tops. He was one of only three aliens left over from ep.1, and those three are the only ones with fake-Earth accents (exaggerated Jamaican, fake Asian for the Trade Federation and bad Italian for Anakin’s former owner). I saw many outright alien languages with subtitles this time, as should be in a galactic empire. Oops, sorry, that’ll be the third movie. [big Grin]

Was anyone else unamused by the very topical US political references jammed in, such as the Naboo Queen being clearly compared to the US President (two terms in office, “democracy is our motto”), or having an undesireable high ranking Council official being one or two syllables away from Newt Gingrich?

Yeah, the Lars probably can’t remember the droids after 20 years, but why don’t the droids remember them? I sense a memory dump in the future…

The script is written for young audiences of 2002, while episodes 4 and 5 were written for young audiences of the late 1970s; hence a lot of eye candy, videogame-like scenes and less concise character and plot developments. I wish it wasn’t. Saturday, I kept thinking “Okay, there’s another action figure money shot…” at some new scene.

Padme should have figured Anakin doesn’t like sand, him being from Tattooine… This makes four out of five movies wih Tattooine in it. Not bad for a backwater little forgettable planet. And at least this time they tried to have some designs looking less sophisticated than the ones seen in the middle movies.

Like Ep. 1, I won’t see this again until video. Heck, I rewatched Ep 1 only on TV, and on my 3” B&W Watchman at that. It didn’t look too good. The other 3 movies, seen on the same tiny screen, fared considerably better. I have my opinions on why, but that’s another subject entirely…

  6. I was persuaded to post this… it’s Friday… blame arcane.

Someone at work had someone give him, upon returning from a trip to TaiWan, some choice snacks from Asia – most of them originally from Japan, actually. Unable to resist rare treats, I asked for some.

They’ve been sititng near me for ten minutes, and the pungent smell of cheap chocolate is difficult to resist.

First up: Tomato Pretz! It’s really thin, looks really salty, smells of tangy oil – the Italian salad flavouring, no doubt – and tastes like… Remember the old Humpty Dumpty hickory sticks? They’re still around, but not as prevalently. The Pretz look like those (except longer) and taste very similar, though a bit more sour.

It also looks porous, but biting off both ends does not create a mini-flute or straw. Blowing or sucking has no effect.

Next up, we have Chocolat pots, looking like little dumplings with a chocolate paste/spread in it, kinda like a fried Nutella macaroon. The smallness of the paste gives but a faint trace of chocolate taste, the mainthing hitting the palate being the disintegrating slightly fatty cookie. Eating several gets slightly nauseating.

And finally, we have the infamous Pocky! In this case, “Men’s Pocky”, with the dark chocolate covering over the thin cookie. Of all the Pockys, it’s the only one I can see which has one of those infamous Engrish sayings on the box. Frankly, it looks like an edible sparkler. I won’t try to set fire to it (yet wonder who on this board would), but suckling on the chocolate end allows for a nice taste of the bitter chocolate before I suck cookie. Suckling the bare cookie side does not give a nice pleasing chocolate taste, so I returned to the first one. But as it had been suckled clean, I just ate it in bites.

They can be addictive, one is too small a taste to be sure.. so you eat another.. and another… they’re all so waffer-thin! (sic)

  7. Thank you, arcane, bradm... I think. [Roll Eyes] (And I would have been sick even without the drink, it was purely a case of eating too much beforehand plus not dancing all-out since EtH Jan 3.)

I've always believed it could happen, to anyone (and I'm not one to think some women can't use it on men, or going same-gender), but it was sobering to hear it even happens in the club itself - I gather it was the main room? Then again, some have decidely private corners, where you can't see much from the waist down when sitting...

No matter how I'd like to pound people I'd find doing that to someone, I know realistically the best I can do is alert bar staff or the bouncer. Then it's their job to pound the person to mulch.

  8. dog: what means of travel do you use to pass the border? Crossing by car is still the easiest way and having a licence (if you own the car) may be more accepted for a while.

Crossing by plane, and especially by train or bus definitely requires a passport to avoid problems, and has been so for the past five years. I should know, I was once denied entry, and it all started because I didn't have a passport - they automatically thought I was less worthy.

And personally, for my vacation this summer, I'll even bring a physical plane ticket to prove I have a way out of the US if necessary - I'm not sure every Immigration officer understands the concept of electronic tickets (again, speaking from experience)...

As for fingerprints, it's looked at, as are other biometric measures, but the recent feat of someone completely destroying the validity of fingerprint readers may push that possibility back for a while. No, what is being actually worked at in the US are face recognition machines... which don't work most of the time, or if your face is even five degrees off on the side... and somehow, I don't think it'll stop them from implementing it...

  9. Well, I can read the whole site and the forum without a problem in Netscape 4.78, as long as I keep both Java and Javascript off. But Netscape refused steadfastly to lead me through the registration process no matter which Java options are enabled, and equally dislikes posting requirements (i.e. signing in). So I have to use IE 5.5.

  10. Ack!

    Therefore:

    “O Holey slice”

    “Crusty the Breadman”

    “Away in a Toaster”

“Deck the slice with peanut butter, falalalala, lalalala…”

“I Heard the Pop on Toastmas Day”

    “The Twelve Spreads of Toastmas”

  11. Arcane, I said hush!! [Razz]

And thank you, Ms. Hux, for your kind words. (And thank you Puddles too!) Sometimes I feel like I'm flailing like a muppet on acid; then I scour my memories of watching "Meet the Feebles" and realise I'm not. [smile] I'm hoping to bridge a bit more between the moving and the dancing, get a more harmonious mix of the two. As for more shows, I hope to get to yours on Thursday, maybe bring a friend (dance teacher, it'll be right after my class and she lives nearby)...

  12. Three guesses who was the "dude havin' a freak-out-epileptic-dance-fit"... Heh. I'll have to work on my style for next time. ("That was a style??")

This was my third time seeing D&T, and my first time at Babylon's. The space seemed more à propos for the band than the more cramped Zaphod stage where they were before; the wide open dance floor also enabled the groove to circulate mellifluously rather than drowning the few people able to see the band at Z's. This said, D&T were in top form Saturday, never missing a beat and hooking the few which the Bus didn’t already hook in their groove. The quick set changing helped a lot in maintaining the atmosphere (and many kudos for the house DJ for keeping the volume at reasonable and sane levels throughout the night – I didn’t have any earbuzzes when I got outside). D&T maintained the roundabout approach to the “hits” (at least the better pieces of Vinyl Killer many like), but I suspect from listening to bradm that this is a standard approach; they also jammed furiously within each piece to enhance the overall pleasure of just listening to them. Watching them, as was said, gave yet more depth to their presentation.

I haven’t been much to the jam scene yet, this being my second night (after being coaxed by bradm to a good Huxtable gig in the difficult Maxwell’s location), but I’m starting to understand what goes under those vibes emanating from the speakers. Next time, I should be able to approach the dance floor earlier – and yes, I’ll stay to my spot and not make anyone around me fear decapitation. I promise. [big Grin]
