  1. Maria Courtleigh

Brooding bitch, whose past is the only thing darker than her hair. She rolls into town every once in a while supposedly prego with one the leading men's baby. She's known for blackmail, great masquerade balls and generally evil tendencies. She also had a blonde twin sister that died a mysterious death involving a cliff, Maria's old fiance and some drained break fluid. hmmmm.

  2. Hey Tungsten,

I know you're from The Sound, but do you thinkyou an handle the Camino? I'm it's as three-tone skid-licious brown as they come!

    hahahah

    nina

p.s. Northern Wish, I'll be in London, so before you head to KW you can swing by and get me too, then maybe onto Woodstock for Craig. If you're going, you should just go all out, right!

    have a great weekend.

  3. I hate to weigh in on all these craptastic posts. I usually leave the highroad and complaining to my better half, but I feel I must say something.

    First:

1- I don't know any of you personally.

2- I think the interested parties have begun to use this forum as a place to attack in a passive/aggressive way.

    And so...

Either move onto Grade 5 and either call each other or email your hostilities, so as not to include the rest of us...

Or, realize that not everyone can get along. And maybe a public forum is not the way to discuss issues relevant to only a small handful.

We don't want to be dragged into this. And our scene isn't suffering, our patience is.

Lump it or leave it--> that motto works for a whole lot of stuff.

  4. Breakups and makeups are always hard to deal with. However, I welcome EACH member of nero, new or old, to Saint John whenever they can find the time. You guys have always rocked, and I look forward to seeing Shane without his glam green bass (as much as I'll miss it), and Chris at the next opportunity.

Long live great music and life in its ever-changing beauty.

    smiles,

    Nina

p.s. I miss you too Todd. Get yer Maritime ass back here, soon.

  5. Hello All,

I'm a reporter in NB, and today my unlucky assignment is to try and guage how quickly business resumed after smoking bans were instituted in some Ontario towns. See, Saint John city council is trying to pass one, only this city is like a smoker's haven. People here are pissed, and businesses are crying foul. Fredericton had one, only someone challenged it, and the thing was rescinded. So, if any of you live in Ottawa, Guelph, Waterloo, St. Catharines, Toronto, or anywhere else there is a smoking ban, I could use some help tracking down sources. I need the phone numbers of some local bars. Not restaurants, just bars. If you could just open your local phone book, jot down about three phone numbers, that would help, a lot.

    Thanks to everyone,

    Nina.

p.s. I'm going to get front page play for this, in both our city and provincial editions, so I'll remember all of you that could help in any way.

  6. Now that I have your attention... [Eek!]

    Scene & Heard needs you!

Scene & Heard is now accepting submissions for its next issue due out later this fall. If you would like to write for us and already have an idea, or finished piece please send it to sceneandheard@canada.com If you haven't got a clue where to start, but are interested in covering events in your area, because, hey, you'll be there anyway, we want to hear from you. This takes no previous writing experience or talent, just a love for the music. Please include you full name and the city you live in.

    We're interested in...

    Some regular features like:

-Concert and Show Reviews. 600-900 words. Please include setlist, venue, ticket price, date. We really appreciated Sean Swan's review of Prince in Hamilton in the last issue. Thinking outside the box is a must.

-Festival Reviews. 1000-1200 words. Please include set list, venue, ticket, price and date.

-CD Reviews. 600 words. Preferably new material, but our Vault Editor is always looking for a new way to discuss old greats.

-Band interviews. If you've got an idea, a band, and an urge to write, drop us a line. Or if you're a band and want an interview, drop us a line.

-Interest columns. 1000-2000 words. If you've got something to say about the scene, we're interested. Good or bad, as long as you have a critical eye, and discerning taste, Scene & Heard is always looking for fresh angles.

-Feature pieces. Much of the above can be previewed in great feature items, if people are inclined to cover such events. Suggestions welcome.

-Letters to the editor about our past issues. 300 words. Try to keep them clean.

-The Monthly List. Please submit anything you think you be on our monthly list

-SUGGESTIONS. And lots of them. Tell us what you want to read about. What's been working, and what hasn't.

    Some new features like:

-Regional beats. Whether you live in Nanaimo, Canmore, Truro, Fredericton, or anywhere in the middle, Scene & Heard wants to know what's going on. If you think you've got your finger on the pulse let us know.

-Campus contacts. The live music scene at our universities and colleges is very different from city to city. Scene & Heard wants to know what's going on across the country.

-PICTURES! If you took it this summer, we want it. Drop an email with jpegs, so we can get an idea of what you've got. Please include location, show, date, and any applicable names.

-In the Taper’s Section. After spending a killer weekend at Evolve near the soundboard, Scene & Heard really realized the amount of dedication and near-sobriety it takes to tape a show. If you tend you spend your shows in the taper section, Scene & Heard would love to include it. We're expecting your point of view in review or column form. Please include how many shows you tape on average, how you started, and why you do it.

-From the bands. Usually as fans, we tend to take the lead. But really, if it wasn't for the bands we'd all just be sitting at home playing Yahtzee or something. If, as a collective band or single member, you have something to say to readers and show-goers, Scene & Heard is excited to get your message out. Managers are also welcome to drop us a line. Send us columns or concerns no longer than 1500 words.

    Thanks for the interest,

    Scene & Heard

  9. Shainhouse,

For some reason I thought you were much older. But anyway, I'm originally from the Niagara region and my sister Livia just moved into Brandon Hall yesterday, too. And man, was she excited!!!! Un/Fortunately I missed the whole moving day thing, having only my experiences of 7 years ago to rely on. Good Luck this week, and party your ass off, because as the days pass from here on, they'll only be memories. And unless you're un/lucky, you only get to do frosh once.

On an unrelated note, can you drop me an email about what you do for Revolving Door. I'm taking over the editorial side of Scene and Heard, and would love a campus correspondent like you. I'm putting out a huge post Monday night with all the details, but I realize you might be out of commission for the next few days. I'd be really interested in connecting with you.

    Enjoy Frosh Week young Marauder!

  10. I think you guys are missing the point about the mainstream media, and helping the scene get a leg up. As a reporter I can tell you how print works... basically the people who read the paper every day are the people who have subscriptions, thus the content is justified by what these subscribers want and expect from their local, provincial and national dailies.

How many of you reading this right how have a subscription to your local newspaper? The men and women who have the paper delivered daily to their homes, most of the time, are just trying to get by. ie/put their under-10s to bed early, find out why their prescriptions aren't covered by medicare, and figure out who the hell broke into Jim's local gas station the other night and stole his truck.

If you want coverage, you need to start writing in. A killer band play in your area and it wasn't reviewed in the paper? Start at the beginning... was it in the listings page? If the answer is still no, you need to send a letter to the editor, or two, or ten. Can't find shows in your free community weekly (Eye, Here, Scene, Id, etc..)--- write in. Start a revolution. And demand coverage of the events you want.

Beyond print, TV and Radio are just looking to cover any big event that has captured a community. And it doesn't have to be a review either. Was there a traffic jam? A huge line up? Most days in newsrooms everywhere, news is just that, news. And over half of these newsrooms are still populated by over-50 men who were using pre-Second World War typewriters when they got their first scoop, and wouldn't know something hip if it bit them in the ass. So phone in your tips, write letters, and bug you local entertainment editor. Trust me, he will begin to search out what his community wants to hear about.

And believe me, press packs are deadly. Very deadly. But they ABSOLUTELY require phone calls and follow ups. Lots of them.

Anybody want to tour in New Brunswick, I'm your gal. I can give you names for all of the entertainment editors, radio station contacts, and a list of great bars that love live music.

On another note, I've been a successful Adopt-a-Band parental unit since March 2002, and haven't been let down yet. Get to know the bands that visit your area. All they want is a couch, your internet connection, and a shower. Beyond that, they usually party hard, laugh a lot, and tell VERY FUNNY stories. Oh, and they bring their funny managers, too. Well worth it.

  11. I've always been really excited to use "grody" any chance I get. It takes me back to grade 2, when just about everything could be described that way. Ahh the good old days.

Since I moved to the East Coast earlier this year, I've also been introduced to "Fill your boots" which is a response to wanting to do something your peers may not.

-Hey dude, I'm gonna take that last toke, k?

    -Fill your boots.

    It's pretty all-around useful.

    p.

p.s. Tungsten, I'm with Marigold on the whole crunch thing, yo. Can I get a hell yeah, cause the party train arrives in 31 days. Get packing!

  12. how's this for a Wednesday/Monday hell... my lovely city of 70,000 is completely without water and has been since yesterady at dinner. Some dink broke a water main while doing construction, then tried to repair it, only to have it break in a bigger place. The whole city is cranky and smelly. Some hump day eh? Everything's closed but where I work, or course.

    I HATE UNFORSEEN CRAP!!!!!!!
