Former Ottawa Mayor Marion Dewar has died at the age of 80 after suffering a fall in Toronto on Friday.

From her first career as a nurse to her political career, which started when she was elected to Ottawa city council in 1972, Marion Dewar always looked at the most vulnerable among us and used whatever platform she had to help.

Mayor of Ottawa from 1978 to 1985, Dewar spearheaded Project 4000, which rescued that number of Vietnamese refugees to settle in the capital.

Councillor Alex Cullen tells CFRA News, he remembers Dewar fondly.

"She was a positive person, always thinking about other people. That's a great attribute," says Cullen.

In 1987-88, Dewar sat in the House of Commons after winning a by-election in the riding of Hamilton Mountain.

In 2002, she was made a member of the Order of Canada.

Marion Dewar was 80.

Beginning Tuesday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. a book of condolences will be in Andrew Haydon Hall at Ottawa City Hall.

Funeral arrangements have not been made yet.

Sad.
