Doppler (d)efect

this fall vancouver's live drum & bass pioniers will head east to infect the masses. the band will take thier unique aproach to drum & bass and abstract grooves from victoria to montreal in what promises to be quite a ride. for tour dates and music go to www.dopplerdefect.com

drum n' bass. literally.

The foundation of any rhythmic music begins with drums and bass, a relentless pulse that enslaves the listener. Drawing from a wide range of genres, (jungle, dub reggae, nu-skool breaks, dancehall, electro funk), doppler defect pushes the boundaries of live music, incorporating improvised musicianship with live sounds, extending the parameters of contemporary composition.

The ultimate goal of doppler defect is to achieve a sonic tableau unheard before, spontaneous composition, telepathic communication, twenty-first century soundscapes, all translating to a funky dance floor vibe.

Three musicians will begin to sound like an orchestra, the groove continuously morphing, evolving into new sounds, with harmonic oddities and rhythmic insanity, the sum total is an utterly unique style of music that is guaranteed to make you dance.

"I came to hear jazz, not fucking Star Wars!"

- anonymous, Centre for the Performing Arts

"At first glance, the trio-which opens for Joshua Redman on June 23-may seem like like little more than a jungle version of the New Deal. But....its West Coast counterparts take a more studied approach, replicating not only the rhythms but also the textural intracies of drum n' bass tracks. Doppler shows can sometimes devolve into confusion, but as demonstrated by its independantly released debut, Live: 11.29.02, the trio's instrumental skills usually rescue it from improvisational chaos."

- Martin Turenne, Georgia Straight

"Doppler (d)efect plays a bunch of gigs, applies to the Jazz Fest, and gets to open for the giant Joshua Redman at the Centre on Monday. That's even niftier than the trio's name. This from Jazz Fest headquarters: 'We thought it would make a great double bill; their demo was the strongest of its type, a real stand-out live drum n' bass poject with unique approaches. Really cool.'"

- The Vancouver Province

"On the music tip I enjoyed the explorations; the guitar / insect / nightcreature - chompings....tastey drumming; I think all of ya had "taste" in mind working with SOUND. Good vibes...."

- Jeff Ballard, Wicked Drummer

Mark Robertson

Mark Robertson, the brains and creative force behind the critically acclaimed Montreal funk band Bullfrog, is busting loose with his new solo project Robertson. After years working the Montreal club scene, touring the world as Kid Koala’s guitar player and then as the front man for Bullfrog, Robertson is stepping out and taking his music in a new direction, while Bullfrog takes a breather. Robertson’s new sound reflects his past, a mixture of the stripped down singer songwriter style he developed in his busking days combined with the refined flavors of his R&B, funk and jazz influences. These sensibilities together with the acrobatic turntable skills of DJ Kid Koala, a co-producer and collaborator on this new recording project, gives an ultra-modern flair to the soulful funkiness that emanates from Robertson’s fingers and lips. Robertson’s current touring line up includes Peter Santiago on drums and bass and DJ P-Love on turntables and samplers.

What the critics have to say about Robertson’s talent...

-Jam Base March 6 2002

“…manages to evoke the sound of the likes of Tower of Power, Harvey Mandell and even James Taylor without ever sacrificing the present day”

-Hip Hop Connection 04/02

“Humorous, amiable and un-demandingly funky”

-Wallpaper April 2002

“Mark is one of the most talented songwriters I know”

-Metrolife (UK) 7/15/02

-New Times Phoenix AZ 3/7/02

“Robertson uses a 70’s Strat and twangs away like Leo Nocentelli, subtracting notes rather than adding them”

-Pulse Feb 2002
