“A multiracial jam army that freestyles with cool telekinesis between the lustrous menace of Miles Davis’ On The Corner, the slash-and-om of 1970s King Crimson, and Jimi Hendrix’ moonwalk across side three of Electric Ladyland.â€- David Fricke, Rolling Stone.

Bio:

Founded by monster groove bassist Jared Michael Nickerson and Village Voice icon Greg "Ionman" Tate in 1999, Burnt Sugar the Arkestra Chamber is a sprawling band of musicians whose prodigious personnel allows to freely juggle a wide swath of the experimental soul-jazz-hip hop spectrum. This very accomplished crew has playing credits that range from Toshi Reagon, DJ Logic, Gary Lucas,, TV On The Radio, Tamar Kali, Phish, William Parker, Liz Wright, The Holmes Brothers, Wadada Leo Smith, David Murray, Joseph Bowie.

Arkestra Conductor Greg Tate says, "Burnt Sugar got the nerve to claim Sly Stone, Morton Feldman, Billie Holiday, Jimi Hendrix and Jean Luc Ponty as progenitiors Our player-ranks include known Irish fiddlers, AACM refugees, Afro-punk rejects, unrepentant beboppers, feminist rappers, jitterbugging doowoppers, frankly loud funk-a-teers and rodeo stars of the digital divide."

As a free-improvising multi-songbook ensemble, B.S.A.C. can bring one group of players and perform Miles, Steely Dan, Van Peebles, Bowie, James Brown, Burnt Sugar and their newest addition, Sun Ra selections, while also utilizing Butch Morris's "Conduction System" to create new music within song structures that are well known and loved. In other words, Burnt Sugar has become a min-festival in itself.

The stalwarts tend to include singers Lisala, Karma Mayet Johnson, Shelley Nicole and Jeremiah, Latasha Nevada N. Diggs, Justice Dilla-X (vocals & effected vocals), Mikel Banks (vocals & freak-a-phone), Derrin Maxwell (mc), Mazz Swift (violin & vocals), Will Martina (cello), André Lassalle (guitar), Ben Tyree (guitar), Asim Barnes (guitar), Thom Loubet (guitar), Lewis "Flip" Barnes Jr. (trumpet), Michael Veal (soprano sax), Micah Gaugh (alto sax), V. Jeffery Smith & Avram Fefer (tenor sax), "Moist" Paula Henderson (baritone sax), Dave Smith (trombone), Josh Sinton (bass clarinet), Bruce Mack (synthesizer), Leon Gruenbaum & W. Myles Reilly (piano), LaFrae Sci (drums), Trevor Holder (drums), Chris Eddleton (drums) and Qasim Naqvi (drums) as well as occasional "special guests" like Vernon Reid (guitar), Maya Azucena, Vinai Mojica, Abby Dobson (vocals) or noted installation artist Satch Hoyt (flute & percussion) who's now living in Berlin and Marque Gilmore who's now living in Oslo-- Oh yes the Arkestra Chamber is global like that!
