The Walworth County Highway Committee turned down the request to stage two sold-out shows in August at the Alpine Valley Music Theater in East Troy, Wis. With as many as 200,000 people expected to show up for the concerts, committee chairman Odell R. Gigante said the crowd would overwhelm local authorities. "You can imagine the amount of humanity that's going to converge on little old East Troy in Walworth County," said Gigante. "We only have 80 some sheriff deputies. Short of bringing in the National Guard we just couldn't handle it." The concerts would have been the first public performances by the surviving members of the band since the death of guitarist Jerry Garcia in 1995. ---------------------- Talk about things that really suck!!
