  1. Just had to slip ;) this in:

Introducing Extinct, the debut CD from the Real Gone Daddies. The 'Daddies have been playing original music in Ottawa-area clubs and festivals for a number of years, and the completion of this first studio album marks a milestone for the band.

Mavericks (221 Rideau Street) is hosting the cd release party on Friday December 8, 2006. The Hungry Freaks will begin, with a zany tribute to the music of Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention. There will also be a screening of "Das Rad", an Academy Award-nominated short animation feature. Real Gone Daddies will follow, with two sets of originally conceived music. Go to www.realgonedaddies.com for more; come to Mavericks for the real deal...

  2. Go to a store with a good selection of sticks and spend some time trying a variety of sizes on a practice pad. Look for comfort in weight, length and diameter. Tip shape can be important, too. Let the staff make suggestions, but reserve the decision for yourself.

Don't be led by brand names or advertising.

Buy a few different sizes, and brands. Your taste in sticks will likely change over time, so enjoy the hunt.

  3. OK, not really, but our debut CD, [color:brown]extinct , is packaged and available. So far, distribution is limited to Compact Music stores in Ottawa, Long and McQuade Music (Ottawa store only) or from the the band's website .

We're hosting an official release party at Mavericks in Ottawa, on Friday December 8th, and you're invited!!!.

The HUNGRY FREAKS, who play a tribute to F.ZAPPA and the MOTHERS of INVENTION, will open the night. A very cool animated short film, DAS RAD (The Rock) will be shown. RGD will play two, full sets of their own brand of funked-up fusion rock.

Check the RGD website for details.

    Big, happy smile,

    Terry

  4. Yes, that's the idea. There are four other acts, aside from TMNS, and a full night is planned. Here are some links for the other band's:

    No Buds For Bob

    Wooly

Wild Bill Voisey, with the help of several guest performers, will offer up some acoustic renditions of Grateful Dead tunes.

Mandrake Root are a 3-piece heavy rock unit, built from the fire and ashes of the former Chickenhead.

  5. Wow, am I glad to hear of someone else who doesn't think of patio lanterns in connection with Kim Mitchell! I saw Max Webster a bunch of times in the '70's, and they were always a great Party. Wild guitar tone, crazy keys, cool drum fills, deep bass, twisted lyrics; one of Ontario's best, I'd say. Honest, folks; that's not just Lip Service...

still in search of magnetic air,

    tc

  6. "a horde of ticketless fans tore down a fence at another concert, turning it into a free event "

Are they talking about the June'95 Highgate show? That fence was an afterthought; the stage area was already packed with paying customers by the time that happened.

Hey, if anybody has any steam left after Canada Day in Ottawa, come out to Bourbon Street on Saturday the 2nd. TMNS are playing two full sets of Grateful Dead, as a precurser to the August 6th Blowout at the Carlton Tavern (this, to mark the 10th anniversary since Jerry's departure).

  7. Right on, 'Beats.

BradM, are you up to anything? Bourbon Street is a good sounding room, and your recording skills would be appreciated.

Here's part of the night's song map:

    (set2:) Scarlet/Fire/Estimated/Eyes/drums/space/Miracle/He's Gone/Throwin'/Not Fade

It'll be 10years in August, folks; since we lost Jerry, and since this group of dudes played 'Dead songs for a packed Chateau Lafayette-crowd of fellow mourners. Not necessarily a happy anniversary, this one, but a notable one.

You see, the music never stopped...

  8. I thought that was you, Booche. Your Seagull is hangin' in there pretty good. The neck/body bolts needed snugging, and the first few frets were kinda groovy, but that's just wear and tear. The fret dress and setup will carry you through for another while, so enjoy! Thanks for putting in the poster, btw.

Tickler: Stringed-instruments are my business, guitars and basses making up the largest share of my work. Drop by Long and McQuade-Ottawa with your Ripper for a free estimate. I'm in the shop Mon-Fri, 10-6, but you can also leave it with the guys on Thurs or Fri night, or Saturday.
