  1. also, for anybody into new orleans grooves, you must check out WWOZ (on sat. nights), the local nola radio station that plays some of the baddest funk you'll ever hear. dj soul sista - she's got a website too, with many links to music you've never heard of (far beyond the meters), but will most certainly dig.

it's the stuff that inspired the meters.

speaking of funk & nola - also check out frequinox. stanton, will bernard, robert walters, bassist from galactic (mercurio), some horn from headhunters, can't remember who else. goooooood stuff.

  3. I've never seen a show at Palais Royale, but my friends have seen two recent concerts there and they told me the sound was good. The Mule have always had good sound in Toronto, no matter the venue. My fingers are crossed for Sunday.

Mule's sound has always been good for me too, but these sound problems are new (as of this tour), however they may have been resolved by now.

  4. hmm...all I have to say is that I can not be bothered with threads like this anymore. Instead of actually reading it I am going to guess as to what this is about - a shot in the dark if you will.

    1) Someone says the slip is great

    2) Someone says they do no love the slip

    3) Zero insults the person who has a different view than him - probably name calling and personal insults.

    4) Zero proclaims that he is great, and probably the best, smartest, person. It has to be true because he told himself this. Also the fact that he is a journalist proves that he is always right so there is no point in disagreeing.

    5) The rest of the board (except a few) become annoyed and insulted because Zero has said offensive and uncalled for things.

    6) Conclusion: Maybe we could limit the insults a bit

AND LADiDADiDADa this never ends. So I’m taking a vacation from this board.

    The end - Meagan

you hit the nail on the head, meagan.

it's the classic, "he hit me first" "no it was him" fight. childish, yes. where's mom to resolve this, anyways ? hopefully not on tour with the slip.

we see this kind of childish bickering even in a presidential debate.

    B-O-R-I-N-G.

  5. it's kind of hard to search for something when you can't even come up with the search term.

a while back, somebody posted about these energy-efficient houses, that look like little houses hobbits live in. i can't for the life of me find them in the archives, because i can't really search for them.

can somebody jog my memory so i can sleep at night ?

much appreciated, and sorry for the distraction.

  6. Bokonon. I think you missed my point. I was pointing out that tatterdemalion is suggesting that in order to be a vegetarian you have to be health conscious. First, I would be very surprised if you cannot find literature indicating that eating meat can also be a healthy diet. Second, that is not my point anyway. Whether or not vegetarianism is healthier, it is entirely irrelevant whether a person is health-conscious in order to be a vegetarian. If you do not eat any flesh, but live on french fries and avocado, you are not likely to be healthy. You are, however, a vegetarian.

to clarify: many vegetarians i have come across have chosen the lifestyle based on their beliefs of a healthier diet. many vegetarians i know also have chosen the lifestyle as a part of their religion or other non-health reasons. i think it's ridiculous & hilarious to see some of the former groups' eating habits, as it's clearly not a healthy lifestyle (yet is vegetarian).

i'm not suggesting that health consciousness is a prerequisite for being vegetarian. i'm health conscious and i eat meat on a regular basis. as you say, there is a strong argument for eating meat & living healthy.

    i'm just sayin'

  7. Quote:

What kind of Vegetarian are you?

    An angry one.

    that's funny.

also funny are the "vegetarians" who thrive on pop, chips & chocolate bars. they're not eating meat, so that's okay. i'm certainly not complaining about junkatarianism, but i don't even want to hear these people call themselves vegetarian, even though technically they are.

i'm a carni. down here in the south, we like to smoke whole pigs and eat them. and it is damn good.

  8. Here are some comments a friend sent me, which I thought captured the phenomenon that helps explain some of what's going on with Ph*sh.

For discussion: great jambands (or at least,

successful ones) seem to follow a discernable arc.

    1. They are young and hungry and practice and play in

front of empty rooms in strange towns, crowded rooms

    in their home areas.

    2. They are less young, less hungry, don't need to

practice as much and play to strong crowds in most

towns. This is remembered as a "peak" period (Phish

just before Jerry died? Panic 1995?)

    3. They jump to small arenas in the winter and sheds

in the summer. Sound and light shows must improve,

and the sound must change to fill the big rooms.

[first wave of old school fans drop out right here]

    4. They figure out the logistical issues and develop

a new sound, hooking an entirely new set of fans to

    replace the old schoolers.

    5. They do a dominant big room tour in the winter and

solid business in the summer sheds. The scene changes

and the older folks pull in onto themselves with

private lists, message boards and so forth. This is

another "peak" period, though old schoolers now argue

    about it (phish 1997?)

[second wave of fans drop out]

    6. They get older, wealthier, practice less, write

fewer and less inspired songs, and keep selling

tickets. At this point, they are carrying a

corporation full of their friends and loved ones

through tour revenues, and are in something of a trap.

    7. They do something to break out of it. Hiatus.

Quitting. Whatever. They want out from the

responsibility they have for the Corporation That Ate

    The Band.

After that there's really territory that only the

Grateful Dead, the Allman Brothers, Phish, WSP and SCI

have entered. Phish is trying to respect their music

and their fans by understanding that, in the place

they are in life, they are only going to bat 30-50%

and they don't think that's good enough. That's my

    read on it at least.

  9. Someone keeps updating their photo gallery with Coventry photos online.

    see them

wot's the password, or how do i bypass that prompt ? i was able to access those photos yesterday without requiring the pass ....

  10. wow. i wasn't sure that was official, but damn, this is gonna suck in every way. my apologies for making a mockery of the situation which couldn't be any shittier for those folks.

how they're going to deal with the consequences is the next big challenge. refunds obviously don't cut it - the financial hit is unavoidable. maybe a multi-night run at MSG ?

  11. is this legit ? where did you get this piece of news ? if that's the official word, it's gonna get uglier than expected up there. i hope i can catch all of this on the webcast. hell, they should think about making this pay-per-view now - The Ultimate Wookie Fighting Challenge.

Wookie Mudwrestling. I guess all wookie wrestling is mudwrestling though.

  12. i dunno if anything is expected with this band. they pull off the best shows & the worst shows when you least expect it. i hope they throw down good shows this weekend, but let's face it, it wouldn't be the first time they let down on a big occasion if they flub.

as for their playing these days, i personally find it less consistent, and agree with esau about the early- to mid-nineties being better (and more consistent). same thing went for the GD though - they played some smokers in the nineties, but they were fewer & further between. if u ask me, i think the ABB play the most consistently good shows these days for a big-draw jamband. WSP was too, but they had a different kind of ending unfortunately.

but damn, tonight's setlist does look pretty hot.

  13. the real issue here is not what they played, but how they played. it was their final run. they needed to practice so they could nail songs....

yeah, and they really were off the mark. show def'y hit the ground runnin', but then kept straight running right into a brick wall. real looooow energy, drawn out, occasional space (which was good), but overall a sub-par show (but a good time).

bowie wasn't that tight, and don't fret, that def'y ain't the last bowie.

oh yeah, do yourself a favour and find the amber .....

  14. wow. you go all the way to bonaroo and don't watch the whole ween set. you suck.

wow. you go all the way to bonaroo and don't go to the Makers Mark distillery. you suck.

i know it's not your fault, and i really do feel for you.
