  1. well yeah exactly.. a little variety is good.. but it will be hard to get club owners on our side, I mean besides burt neilson, no one has a strong enuff draw to consistantly be able to be booked in many of the places you suggested, not because of lack of talent mind you.. just fan support.

For example a band like BLUE QUARTER.. on average they get 30 people at cozo, but still give the energy like the place is full. their sound is new, fresh and unique.. fans should be interested.. we should be interested..

I mean we have a huge field of talent coming through toronto.. we should be there to hear it.

  2. I'll gladly listen to a tape of it.. even though I recognize the sickness of the performance

I dunno.. seen them alot, supported them alot. but at the same time... its on the same date as the only canadian show of a tour I want to catch.. mahavishnu.. its too bad, alot of people here would love both equally.. boo urns on the timing

  3. they have assured me that is the case.. they don't like them puking in the corners.. but at the moment its their only affordable option

the dumbass kids puke their guts out on K.. thats a bad trip and bad for the zone..

I want those kids out of there.. I am sure others do too.. they make our venue dirty and smelly and it has been too long and it really sucks..

all we need to do is go get plastered a few times en masses and show them we mean business.. they will oust the ravers

  4. Gentle: well there are a few venues, comfort zone just plays the most stuff we'd like per capita in toronto..

cleaning it would do tonnes.. I mean it is sort of our hub if nothing else.. I mean we share collective eyerolls with our friends about the comfort zone, as if to say.. yes I've been there too.

Providing numbers provides cleansing.. its a simple solution.. brave the stench and we'll nuke it

  5. Tela makes a strong point that I forgot to bring up.. this IS the only date in Canada for the Mahavishnu project.. if you want to see them again in the next year, you are goin stateside and paying 4x as much.

Tela, if you decide to come in for the show, can you email me where you are going from, and how many available seats in your car you have.

    About the Mahavishnu Project

Back in 1971 when guitar-god John McLaughlin left Miles Davis' band to form the Mahavishnu Orchestra, he was the first to combine the fire of Hendrix-drenched rock, the grooving jams of Coltrane-esque jazz & the ethereal Indian ragas of Ravi Shankar. The result was nothing less than a musical revolution. The Mahavishnu Orchestra has since been a major influence on everyone from King Crimson to Phish, and was in many ways the first eclectic, electric jam band.

The New York-based Mahavishnu Project launches directly from where the original band left off, giving their own take on this seminal music. This incendiary unit performs unique arrangements of Mahavishnu classics from Birds of Fire and The Inner Mounting Flame while remaining true to the original band's intensity and musicianship. They've recently begun performing material from The Lost Trident Sessions as well as some classic Jan Hammer tunes.

The Mahavishnu Project is made up of some of the hottest players on the jazz fusion scene today. They're led by extraordinary drummer Gregg Bendian (known for his work with Pat Metheny, Ornette Coleman, Cecil Taylor, Bill Frisell & Joe Lovano), described as "one of the most exciting & innovative drummers on the planet" by Avant magazine. Bendian's Interstellar Space Revisited: The Music of John Coltrane was recently nominated for Best Tribute CD of 2000 by The International Association of Jazz Journalists. He's joined by guitar phenomenon Pete McCann (who's worked with Dave Liebman & Kenny Wheeler), long-time Allan Holdsworth & Billy Cobham keyboardist Steve Hunt, Stephan Crump (bassist extraordinaire with Sonny Fortune and Bobby Previte), and violinist Todd Reynolds, who has played with Weather Report's Wayne Shorter and vocalist Cassandra Wilson.

Described as "an avant-jazz electric dream team" by the Philadelphia City Paper, The Mahavishnu Project is not merely a tribute band, but an electrifying, spontaneous live show that stirringly resurrects the spirit of the original Mahavishnu's intricate melodies, super-funky grooves and all-out jamming while bringing new life to seminal classics.

    "A not-to-be-missed live band....."

About Sanctious/Calhoun The Warm Up BAnd

    David Sancious

David Sancious has blazed progressive, funk, rock, fusion and electronic trails since the early 70s. From his amazing fusion classics like TRANSFORMATION to his recording work and countless world tours, including with Bruce Springsteen, Sting, Jon Anderson, Seal, Peter Gabriel and Eric Clapton, to this unique tour, David continues to be a complete original.

    Will Calhoun

Will Calhoun came to national notoriety thru his work with the groundbreaking band LIVING COLOUR. After a hiatus of almost a decade, that band is back on the road and in studio. In the interim, Will has carved a niche for himself in jazz, experimental dub and electronica, african percussion, and has made a pile of classic recordings with Wayne Shorter, Jack DeJohnnette, Mos Def, Herb Alpert, Doug Wimbish and his own Jazz Quartet. Will and Doug Wimbish regularly perform as a duo called HEADFAKE.

see thats why I am ranting and raving people.. this is a big show.. the venue is the best kept secret in canada because they constantly throw little hidden curve balls like this in..

    Think about it

    Jazz is Dead

    Lo-Faber

    Project Object

    Soulive

    recent

    Back in the day

    Merl Saunders

Jazz is Dead (big big party)

    New Deal

I mean these cover charges rarely were over 20$,

its a good venue. if we give them a big party consistantly you can bet your ass that they will clean the place up and fix it up.. our presence will provide them the cash to do it..

Here's the bottom line.. they already like our crowd.. they already book our bands.. the prices are so cheap.. most weeks it is 5$ or free..

But its rundown a bit.. And rightly so its been in operation for what a decade? providing funky tunes.. the venue is older than most of us "scene seniority" wise.. we owe it to them kinda.. hehehhe

well it is a must see show.. thats for damn sure. see what inspired so many bands that we love.

    Peace

  8. See the "FInd another venue logic" is a complacent and more difficult solution..

not to mention a little harsh

I mean comfort zone is dirty on occasion, smelly maybe. But is there a more relaxed atmosphere than the comfort zone? try and chill like that at Lee's Palace or the 360.. you know what I am talking about..

we'd have to break them into our way of thinking musically all over again.. and get them used to our crowd.. all over again.. wrong move

not to mention its harsh.. because comfort zone has provided that venue to you cheap if not free for years now..

the real solution is to offer to help make the comfort zone better.. a revival renovation job.. make it ours in a way.. then it won't be a drag.. and people will beg to go.. trust me..

ideas are good things.. share them..

  9. zimmerman, I really do hear you.. really I do hehehe

ok but here is the catch 22.. if you starve a club of commerce money isn't there to say properly clean or renovate.. both of which are in the offing I am hearing..

A show like this has the power to make them some coin.. that could potentially be used to say clean the place up, paint, desmell, buy new chairs whatever.. get better bands

just saying "Lets find somewhere else" isn't the answer.. because then the cycle starts over..

people really should be glad that comfort zone bothers to book bands we'd be interested in. I know the smell is a drag.. you know the solution

go there.. brave the stink.. and get plastered.. spend your cash.. and they will fix it up trust me..

I am pretty sure it'd work that way if we put it to them that way

  10. A weekend trip to toronto this coming weekend (April 6th) is a good thing.. help support a venue that plays our music.. comfort zone.. see

Mahavishnu Post for much more detail as to why this is a must attend event..

great ideas guys... people who are really serious should start emailing me at davefitches@rogers.com maybe we can build a network hehehhe

    to a good summer

  11. This message is aimed more at members of bands, and their promotion companies that may be reading this hehehe

You all should be supporting each other better, I mean like nero should promote CautionJam Shows on their mailing list.. especially if they are both playing in different cities and aren't really competition for each other. I mean it pays to do it.. combining mailing lists means a larger pool for the info to get to..

    for example if say

nero has 1000 people on their list

    and caution jam has 875

    and jomomma has 855

combined together you have a much much much larger pool to promote to, and would have better results and turnouts.. all cheaply if not freely

    I dunno

I am all like bored and instigatorlike today
