  1. Yet another rant, this time for the fans of bands like.

    Nero

    Caution Jam

    Downtime

    Grand Theft Bus

    Aaron McDonald Band

    Glu

    Fuse

    Astrogroove

    JukeJoint

    Dr. Huxtable

    Deisel Dog

    The Hummers

    etc.

    Fans of the music..

You might ask yourself often as I do.. why aren't any of these bands as huge as SCI or MOE, I mean in many cases.. I am sure many of you will agree the talent level is the same.

If thats the case.. whats different?

    Community

Those bands I mentioned are much better at building that community. SCI and MOE kinda fell into the Displaced Phishtour audience... and that was kinda lucky.. But they would have never been invited to that dance if it wasn't for community.

If a Canadian Jamband audience had the same boastfull vigor as our US cousins, our bands would be just as huge.. Burt Neilson Managed to get on the radar.. What happens when Relix finds out about a band like Alpha Q, or Nero finally gets recognized for what they do consistantly (KICK ASS). These things happen because fans get passionate about what they like, they get their friends out to shows.. they tell new people.. they grab stacks of posters and handbills and make their neighbourhoods a tacky testament to their good taste in music.

Its what needs to be done. More fans have to be proactive like Velvet was in Ottawa.. Talking to the club promoters, asking how they can help, solving problems (getting people out) helping give the owners of the clubs, returns on their investment in us. They get music we like so we will come out, hang out socialize, smoke cigarettes, drink, dance, and laugh in their establishments.. and we often appear as if we don't appreciate it.

Many of them allow us to tape, tapers gotta capture as many shows from across canada from our jambands as possible.. and they have to be made easily available on the internet and well promoted.. so people get the tunes, people get used to the sweet acoustics of a certain venues.

I mean this summer.. why not do your music tour in canada.. just in ontario you could do like 5 cities and catch around 80-100 bands in a month or so, for way less than going to the states, dealing with border issues, stash issues, people smuggling issues, darien traffic issues, high ticket issues, snobby head issues, overpriced food & beer & ticket issues. and Low Canadian Exchange issues.

Not to mention an ontario tour could be easily filled in with other shit like Canoe Tripping, Camping, and Backpacking. all for less than the cost of like I dunno 2 or 3 stateside jaunts to see 10-20 bands.

Thats my summer. But we need to start making it happen, making our party bigger.. Cheap promotional ideas now that it is spring could include. Getting the cheap or free permit to hold a drumjam in a local park.. have a drumjam/cookout get your local vibe out for a sunny day, and get them aware of the shows coming to town, and trips out of town..

With a little organization the cities could easily build a nice cheap travel network. It'd be like a throwback a bit.. being able to travel for like 20 bucks from ottawa to kitchener, go to a field party there for a drumjam in the day, and say to the circus room at night for a good show..

next weekend different city.. all cheap.

All it would really take is some organization, and something like that could easily put the canadian head scene on the map, and maybe divert a little south of the border tour traffic.. The idea is to think big.. All it would take is a small group of us to make this happen

    I dunno food for thought

    glad spring is here

  2. This is a post about A show..

A show that I personally think could ignite most modern-heads imaginations.

It happened when I read a poster

    it said

    COMFORT ZONE

    ASTONISHING DOUBLE BILL

So I read the rest.. and I was astonished.. but then saddened.. I realized that much of the head population might not find this as cool... They do music from the Mahavishnu Orchestra. Which was a little before my non-infant area. Its good stuff

The original players were brilliant.. the arrangments were tough and sick sounding, and It gave alot of the progressive rock of the day a Big Shaking.

John McLaughlin's Mahavishnu Orchestra is considered by many to be the greatest Jazz-fusion group of all time. The group was formed in late 1970-early 1971 by McLaughlin, a brilliant guitarist with a jazz-rock pedigree that included work with the Graham Bond Organisation in the mid-60s, and with the electrified Miles Davis on his landmark "Bitches Brew" LP in 1969.

The original Orchestra included Jan Hammer (later to score TV's "Miami Vice") on keyboards, Jerry Goodman on violin, Rick Laird on bass, and Billy Cobham on drums. They released two fabulous studio albums, Inner Mounting Flame and Birds of Fire, along with a disappointing live album, Between Nothingness and Eternity.

A reformation of the group in 1974 brought Jean-Luc Ponty on board to play violin, along with a host of new supporting musicians (which McLaughlin went on record as saying was the "real Mahavishnu Orchestra"). The Orchestra faded into the sunset in 1975 with the release of the excellent Visions of the Emerald Beyond album, as McLaughlin went on to greener pastures, including a wealth of solo work and further collaborations with Miles Davis and Carlos Santana.

However the show at the comfort zone isn't the Mahavishnu Orchestra.. its The Mahavishnu Project.

A band that plays their material, I have heard the disc, and its note for note perfect and often better, sicker, faster and wilder.

Get a hold of some Mahavishnu Orchestra material somehow. (audiogalaxy etc.) You'll love it if you like Scoffield or Jazz Is Dead or Jean Luc Ponty.

that sort of stuff.. MMW fans will dig this.. Dead and Phishheads alike will gather in the awe that is mahavishnu.

Organize trips from your city.. get to toronto.. go to the comfort zone and check it out.. the players are all top jazz/rock musicians, many played with people like Pat Metheny and Billy Cobham(Original Mahavishnu Member).

The Comfort Zone probably payed a shitload for that band because they are sure we will like it.. They put their faith in us hehehe we could always return the favor.

Do a few domestic bus trips to TO from places like hamilton, and ottawa, maybe montreal, kitchener, all the heads at Western can come home for the weekend to go.

    15$ - April 6th..

The Mahavishnu Project (With The Sanctous Calhoun Duo)

    Mahavishnu Project

Steven Crump, Bass (Sonny Fortune, Johnny Copeland)

Todd Reynolds, Violin (Wayne Shorter, Cassandra Wilson)

Steve Hunt, Keyboards (Allan Holdsworth, Bill Cobham)

Pete McCann, Guitar (Brecker Bros., John Patitucci)

Greg Bendian, Drums (Pat Metheny, Ornette Coleman, Bill Frisell)

    Sanctious Calhoun Duo

David Sanctious, Guitar/Keys (Sting, Springstein, Clapton, Santana)

Will Calhoun (Black Rock Coalition, Living Color)

Thats alot of talent folks.. sorta a I dunno "ONE TIME THING"

they probably aren't going to book this sort of event again there for a while.. Everyone, and I do mean EVERYONE (Ottawa, Toronto, Montreal, Hamilton, Kitchener, London) gets out for this in droves.. If you can provide rides from any of the following cities to toronto or need a ride to toronto for the event email davefitches@rogers.com before thursday to see what can be arranged, or post in the rides section here. I'll Keep a list of everyone providing rides to try and maybe organize this.. its a worth it show. I assure you no one will leave unsatisfied.

If you are a real head and not just into funky clothes and hot dready guys/girls you'll probably be there.

  3. Ok tonite its FUSE

which is pretty cool cause like

and this is a bit of that vibe.

members of the pocket dwellers doing improv funk.. sounds good

    cheap drinks and drums 9-11

    band from then on...

come out its boxing day.. show off the shit you bought, by returning mis-directed, and rediculous gifts.

  4. Best Bands Live 2001

    Big Guys

    1. Oysterhead

    2. SCI

Not Quite As Large Monetarily but also cool

    1. Downtime (Best surprise for toronto ever)

    2. Grand Theft Bus in Toronto over the summer

    3. Caution Jam's Jerry Shows (sick sets)

    4. Bondo

    5. Snack & Lo Faber (Tie)

    Additional Cool Honourable Mentions

    1. JoMomma improving.. making like them more.

    2. Comfort Zone adding Funky Fridays for 2002

    Bullshit Items.

    1. Abuse of Wah-Wah Pedals and Shaft-Ish Chord progressions.

    2. Anti-Trey, ok what the fuck.. they are tired.. let them rest and when the phish isn't all swimmed out they will play again.

    3. Being abstractly let down by Stewart Copeland's drumming in Oysterhead live, while recognizing that his is in fact the shit, and that it was an early tour stop.

    Thats it

  5. I personally am a lover of Downtime's sound, track was a good cut.. they get crazy live especially with the midi guitar involvement, nothing like watching that band and then realizing the phat MMW rhodes action sort of deal was coming out of a guitar.

good shit.. 19th at the comfort zone.

    for free too

  6. ok, the people who saw these guys at the comfort zone last time know exactly what to expect here from this one. PHAT GROOVES from a 3 piece power trio sort of stuff. The real deep drunken funk.

    PEI FUNK!

9-11 Open Drum Jam (9:15 or so usually)

Then Downtime takes the stage for the second time since relocating to toronto.

This band really kicks ass and people should like hold thier noses, and their "coolness" and "nobody goes to the zone" shit.. and check out where its really at.. a solid musical outfit, throwing down. for free.

    December 19th - Comfort Zone

Corner of Spadina and College... Has a purple sign, can't miss it.. if you do.. you are probably on drugs.. if you are on drugs right now.. cheers.

I got a new drum.. it is smaller.. hoooray..

  7. Jo Momma and Caution Jam will lite up the stage at the comfort zone, no telling exactly what will happen due to recent sightings and sit ins from various cool jam personas for Caution Jam, and Jo Momma re-igniting their recent sets with some new material. The evening will of course consist of additional things such as cheap beer, drum jam after sound check and in the setbreaks (be real guys if we have 10 drums a whackin while they play, all at various levels of talent, it can become a solo instrument). Caution Jam's recent habits of jamming with Jeff Healy and Burt Neilson's Jeff Heisholt, compounded with their recent re-surfacing of forgotten material and a few new ones for CJ like a wicked City's -> Wolfman's Brother (PhIsh - Duh wink.gif" border="0 ), the musical posibilities for their set are endless and it is totally worth checking out.

Before Caution Jam takes the stage Jo Momma will.. With recent experimentation into spacier drum & bass jams and new material showing up, they will definitely lay a foundation for the night.

But Even Before that The Drummers will no doubt be out in force, to call the evenings vibe, tribalistically. Bring your drums but be nice and don't play to loud when the band plays.. they can easily get lost in your beat if its not on. It doesn't matter if you aren't the worlds best Player, just that you come out and support a cool thing, and be a part of the party, learn something real in the age of technology and video games.

Make the vibe kick ass and you will have a good time.

    December 21st

    Comfort Zone

    9-Close.

    2.50 drinks - 9-11

9$ pitchers all night (with reasonably priced keiths pitchers and pints just in case you like beer).

why the fuck not its free and its good music.

  8. The Groove wednesdays vibe keeps growing every week it seems.. this week we have

Bondo and The Nat Roman Band.

Bondo I know alot about, we caught them at the zone one night when they took the stage filling in for a cancelled joe momma show (I think).. these guys are a power trio that really kicks. they do alot of unexpected covers and medeski style drunken grooves.. so that will be worth going to check out on its own.. add in Nat Roman and that is a great combination..

as usual the drum jam will be occuring starting sometime after 9pm when the band soundcheck finishes.. more drummers keep showing every week and This dude keeps coming out and showing the newer drummers some cool african beats.. bring your drum, have fun, learn.. then groove to bondo and nat roman..

its free.. and good for you too.

    9-close wednesday December 12th

    9-11 Drumjam

    Bondo (groove/funk)

    Nat Roman Band (eclectic pop/funk)

    see you there.. hopefully =)

  9. 2 cents..

    1. BNB at comfort zone is a good show.. sure its cramped and the venting is cruddy, but as the dude said no flashlights no bs.

    2. Caution Jam's show as of late has been better hearing them do Cities->Wolfman's Brother is like different.. they have been at it a long time. to me.. they know what they are doing..

so both are valid places for me, not to mention not as pricy as an anal government show

  10. every wednesday at 9-11 before the show at the comfort zone is an open drum jam, sorta a cool thing when it goes down. and it can very easily, all the time.

show up for 9pm (or shortly after) with your drums

make it an event boys and girls, it can really enhance your wednesday night..

northeast corner of spadina and college.. after your done drumming this week.. you can tap into the vibe layed down by Toronto Funk/Jazz/Jam Band "Professor Plum" drums and music.. its good shit..

and for those not yet aware, go to healy's (right on bathurst below queen) and check out caution jam, if the mood is right you may see Jeff Healy Jam with the Band. its a Sweet venue
