It's weird (to me) how not paying for music has become totally acceptable, even encouraged.
A brother's gotta eat, yo.
I pay for music. I go to shows. I buy merch at shows.
People downloading music illegally is not a justification for using your music to sell Volkswagens.

What Wilco did was shit. You can justify it a million ways til Sunday, it was soul sucking commercialism.
Lets make an album of music that expresses something deep about the way we're feeling and then sell the whole thing to be used in commercials.
Can't wait until bands start getting sponsered by companies to make albums.
This just in, Coors light has just signed [ insert favorite band here ] to a 3 album deal. Release date for the first tune will be during this years Super Bowl commercial.

Good read Northern Wish but Dave Eggers point is a little different. His is getting hired specifically to do a job. He's not creating an artistic work that some marketing department later decides could work really well to sell some Pepsi.
I understand that things are hard for musicians. It's hard to get noticed, it's hard to get paid, no one buys records anymore.
It would be extremely hard not to justify taking a six figure plus pay cheque, to sell TD banks new life insurance plan.
That amount of money represents so much opportunity to a artist. It would allow them to continue to create and go a long way to support them as artists. It can't be an easy thing to turn down.
I guess sometimes I miss Hal Johnson's sentiment, where rock n' roll meant something more then just getting paid.

I don't see how it's any different than a movie or television star using their face and voice to promote cosmetics or insurance or whatever. No one considers them a sell out, they're seen as cashing in on an easy pay day.
No, they are sucking Satan's cock like the rest of them.

I can separate a song from a commercial.
But can you separate the artist from the disappointment in the total lack of artistic morals?
Think about how shitty it's going to be when Truckin' gets used in a Ford commercial.

Look out here comes that drug resistant bassist, run for your life

Yes, I know everyone must get paid and now that there is no record companies, ad revenue is a big way the bands can support themselves, blah, blah, blah.
But what about artistic integrity? In these days of total consumerism, there doesn't seem to be any thought that maybe the art that is being created goes beyond slinging Beer and Automobiles.

I mean it's one thing if a ad firm we're to hire a band to write a ditty for a specific project (like Ween did for Pizza Hut) but to sell your music that was created as a form of artist expression, well that is just lame.
Any thoughts?

I agree with what Marco said. There is a lot of new and exciting opportunities for musician right now. You just need to have some creative vision, gumption (motivation, drive etc.) and some good fucking tunes.

Now if they only start booking something musically interesting (i.e. not boring alt-rock, emo or rock & rave) then I'd be happy to go. As of yet the venue looks great but the bands...not so much.

I miss going to see live music that can bring me to that place where great improvisation rock bands go.
That can't help but dance and jump for joy, while travelling the cosmos of the universe and getting punched in the face all at the same time.
Or as Arnold said in pumping iron "I'm coming.."
PS. If you ever see Mike Gordon, ask him how he throws out a garbage can.

......yet people just don't (want to?) put 2 and 2 together.
That's because we're too busy talking about how crazy Tom Cruise is...etc

Man these guys can't even lose gracefully. Give it up already.
Can't believe people still think they might have a shot. I mean even if they did, it's not like they would be able to actually win a series. Pathetic. Worst managed team since the 1960's
-
Yes, some pretty crazy stuff. What's surprising is how long it's been going on and how well they've managed to keep things quite.

No, I was just illustrating that the road to commercialism is a slippery slope. Where do you draw the line?
