Turns out that one of the usual suspects stands to profit from the panic surrounding the "coming pandemic."

The fundamental issue is who owns the intellectual property rights over Tamiflu. The media reports suggest that the Swiss pharmaceutical company Roche will make billions.

While the drug is produced by Roche, it was developed by Gilead Sciences Inc.which owns the intellectual property rights. Gilead, which has maintained a low profile, has outsourced the production to Roche.

Donald Rumsfeld was appointed Chairman of Gilead Sciences, Inc. in 1997, a position which he held in the years prior to becoming Secretary of Defense.in the Bush adminstration. Rumsfeld had been on the Board of Directors from the establishment of Gilead in 1987.

apparently mr rumsfeld has had a long standing involvement with the company that developed Tamiflu, touted as the one antiviral drug that might help people survive a killer flu. In a related development, Gilead is now trying to recover the rights to produce Tamiflu, claiming that the current manufacturer, Roche, is not up to the task.

HAhaha, that's funny Tim, when my Mom came to see her first Dr. Huxtable show (a band I used to be in) she said "I remember when a song had a beginning, a middle and an end."

i think that she tried to listen to Dead tapes that i gave her, but it was "too confusing." she thought the same thing after hearing The Rectangular Family (precusrsor to Harvard Mouse) jam.

downstairs at the lanc is a fine place to party. diesel dog was amazing as usual...cheers to pete for not only letting me wail on his drums but for giving me the full rockstar drum roadie treatment (~)

it was really nice to meet more folks from here, finally met mangler and saw many other great people. ..diesel dog has a very cool fanbase, it's very nice to get to be part of such a kickass party!

I totally forgot how hilarious that was when all those cougars randomly showed up at the last Lanc show.

All of a sudden the bar was full and all of our youngish bums were getting pinched and fondled by numerous 50-something year old fingers and pandemonium broke loose.

Thank God for cougars! And the wild friendships and adventures that are sure to be found.

that sure was a weird evening all right. it was really bizzarre from the stage...sudenly there were 5 times as many people on the dancefloor, and it smelled like the perfume counter at sears

the downstairs of the lanc was always somewhere we were warned off going as teenagers in kw....aah, the irony see you all there, only a few more days!

not to inject a cynical note innto the proceedings, but i'm just waiting to hear about the first non-warranty repair bills. the electronics in my chezzy sunfire were like $120 for a little wee potted control module. i'm afraid to imagine what some of the electronics in an hybrid cost.

on the plus side, they are japanese made, and they tend to make pretty solid cars.

the other minor downer thing i heard about hybrids was from a fireman who has seen all manner of electrical hell when rescuing people from crashed hybrids.

here's hoping that you will never ever find out about that aspect of hybrids. hope you have many years of safe low environmental impact motoring!!
