  1. c-towns is such a crusty bitch. Here's some half-assed reviews...

panacea - hate the name, music is a bit too high-brow, but they are very good musicians, I just don't know how exciting they'd be to see live.

These guys are hyped to be an incredible live band. The keys player is also playing in another Montreal band just starting up called "First You Get the Sugar", with some other very talented musicians

  2. Agreed...great review.

Sam Kinninger was INCREDIBLE! Sick version of Soulive's 1 in 7 on top of his other stuff. His band is also incredible.

Bisco was nuts, and really got the crowd amped up for Moe. The first night of Moe. was good, but not great. The second night was quite possibly the best Moe. show I've ever seen (after seeing 10+). Wind It Up had me smiling and hugging the people all around me, and Al's Bisco-esque solo in the Road was just insane (with the fastest strobe light going I've ever seen). All-in-all the best weekend I've had in a very long time!

  3. Those are the kinds of shows that usually get "good" reviews ... mainly because they are mainstream pop. Get that same reviewer out to some lesser-known, non-label, grassroots band (like the ones we all listen to) and you'd get something completely different.

I do understand that the kid does have talent ... just not a talent that I would enjoy experiencing :P

After living in Montreal for five years and reading T'cha Dunlevy's reviews frequently, he is usually pretty bang on. And he DOES in fact review a lot of lesser known gigs and certainly gives props only when props are due.

  4. Quite frankly, I think U-melt is one of the up-and-coming bands in the scene. At Coventry (before they were well known), they were set up in the middle of the tents and played from about 2-5 am, 2 nights in a row. If you check out their myspace page, they have a video of them playing schizophrenia, which has some crazy wonky time signatures, as well as an infectious groove. It would be pretty hard not to get up and dance if you see them live. They're playing late night shows in Albany after the Trey show (on the 29th or 30th), and again in NYC on NYE at 1 or 2 am. I'm pretty sure they haven't gotten up to Canada yet, but they are definately worth checking out.

  5. I'm pretty sure I don't want to be flogged with an organic carrot.....or do I? Thanks for the heads up. I've searched pretty hard online and know about Irene's Thurs and Saturday (is it a set crew, or can I sit in too?), Rainbow thrice weekly (is Saturday better than Sunday or Tuesday? and a number of others at the Royal Oak (Monday at one, Thursday at another), the Thirsty Toad Mondays (more of an 'open mic' for bands), etc. What I'd really like, is a place where there's a rotating group of musicians, and just a constant jam session going, with no set arrangments, and just a ton of improvisation...maybe it's wishful thinking. But if anyone knows of something like THAT, that would be sweet.

  6. I'm just wondering if anyone has been to any of the open JAMS (not open mics) in Ottawa. As a drummer, it's a little difficult to get up on stage and just bust out solo stuff. I have some hand drums, but would love to just show up with some sticks and have a chance to sit and play. Hit me with some knowledge.

  7. What's up everyone. Just moved to Ottawa from Montreal and I'm struggling to find out if and where the Ottawa jam scene exists. In Montreal it seems there's a million plus one shows and musicians all over, while here I'm struggling to even find a band to play with! So, if anyone's got any info on where I should be looking, PLEASE let me know...oh, and if you need a sick drummer, hit me up for sure. Peace!
