  1. I appreciate the effort, and you have a good point Alabama Man. Artists do need to adapt to current times; I recorded an album with my father, and I have to admit he's still in the basement in alot of ways. Including his adaptation to the internet. He had a Myspace addiction for a bit, just going crazy on adding friends (I swear there's got to be an automated way of adding friends).

Neil Young is an excellent example, I don't know why that didn't click in when I was browsing his site awhile back. Not enough artists are adapting to this new net-industry. But one thing I think we're trying to do is put our name out on Itunes, and sell the tracks for a buck or two a piece.

Because you're essentially right when it comes for new musicians to get they're name out- do whatever it takes.

I agree with you on the giving part to make money Jonyak, but I suppose that depends on the artist. Most people won't justify buying a CD unless they really feel for the artist. IF that. There's no key to sucess in this industry, unfortunately. You just have to hope you played your cards right. But I think we've got a few essentials down pat, let me know where I'm going wrong here for the 'Live with Album' types:

    1) Give people a few demo tracks (or complete album) to get hooked on.

    2) Get out and play routinely.

    3) Promote your shows using word-o-mouth, posters, the internet, and maybe the papers.

    4) Enjoy yourself.

  2. Some very serious thinkers here, though. Some good points too. It's hard for an indie artist, who's put at least a few pennies into the production of his album, to just give it out. When it comes to promoting music, it seems justifyable to write them off to radio stations, producers, and web developers ; ). But I think because of how easy music is access, you need to play it the economic way; supply and demand.

It's a tough call, because you can do 1 of 2 things. 1) make your music hard to obtain, selling hard copies only at live shows, and hope that it doesn't leak on the internet, or 2) Sell your live performances, and hope that your fans like the music enough to check those out.

I mean, unless your album goes platinum, an aspiring musician can only hope to rack in money from doing live shows. That's alot of eggs in one basket. I myself, find it daunting when trying to imagine a career in music. Either it happens, or it doesn't.

I know one thing for sure, though. It's not the money that brings me out to do a show, but a love of performing and sharing my energy through music.

  4. Yea I saw Jim Bryson randomly at BSI's Cancer Charity event. haha you wouldn't believe what this guy does to improvise- without his drummer, who took a sick spell that dya, he used a variety of effects, percussion instruments, and just natural humour to make his show one I'll never forget. The music wasn't bad either XD

  5. yea, AD I got to admit you've done a great job; but the research can be daunting sometimes in a busy lifestyle. I barely have enough time of my own nowadays; i agree that opening it up to members, and have several people routinely update it and administrate the site so people do follow the format (sticky!)

  6. That sounds like a fun show, man I might just check that out. I'm actually settling on a gig there at some point!

Checking out that 9 Piece Funk group in montreal Saturday though; wouldn't mind checking out The Hammerheads too because they've rock'd that place every saturday for awhile now.

  7. This is kind of random, but i want to install the Japanese language pack on my computer @ work and I can't due to lack of a Windows 2000 CD.

I was hoping some kind person out there could possibly lend me, or send me a URL to get my hands on an image of it for these purposes only.

I"ll mention that I work in the Minto Place (Suites) building, as I know some of you who strut about the premises.

    Thanks a buncha,

    J.P.

  8. Thanks again guys, I love having good resources on this. My and my pal Shaun (from the Semantics) made a silent vow together (guess it wouldn't be silent then...) to see at least unknown (to us) group /month.

Great way to stay on top of it.

  9. We all advertise our favs, or talented musicians, for whatever reason. But does anyone know of a good website (sort of like XVI.com for rockers) that advertises/promotes local or Ontario venues?

I will always check this site (because I trust most of you guys) however!

  10. Awesome points guys, I think I'll have fun yelling "Punch Buggy" and the such in the middle of a Foo or Mayer tune.

Either way, I just like playing people music. If there's people to hear it, it's worth my time. If theres a burger in it for me (maybe), I'll make sure I ask the cook for any requests.

I've always just wanted to throw away inhibitions and just play music. Gigs are always fun, but there's something carefree about doing public music just for the hell of it.

I'd love to play in some of the parks in BC; vancouver and victoria has got a bunch of them, full of tourists. Any recommendations in Ottawa? I was thinking Britania beach, Andrew Hayden; I'd like to have a output for the amp though, as it does not have a battery.

  11. I was wondering, because it's been an interest of mine, what the rules were on street performing downtown Ottawa.

I see bums do it all the time, and the last thing I'd want to do is trek on their territory. I'd like to set up an amp outside too, but I doubt I'd find an outdoor outlet in alot of places (anyone know some good spots?)

I've also seen the market have some life performers with electronic or acoustic instruments, usually on a nice Sunday.

Again, is this something you set up with the city? Or is it a first come first serve sorta deal based on a common rule?

Again, if anyone knows some good spots, all I think I'm going to do is with or without an amp, acoustic guitar. And maybe the occasional bagpipes XD
