I'm sure any potential scheduling and staging dilemmas have all been well sorted out to make this happen smoothly for Phish's debut at the Roo.

Bring on Phish at the 'Roo. Bring on Springsteen. Bring on acts I don't like or care about. Just keep shaking up the deck, I say.

Just like Trey said about the Dead - "if you really take from them what you should, you won't sound anything like them"..... well, Bonnaroo should (and has) expanded far away from the Phish Festival paradigm, to it's ultimate credit. As dimafleck said, Phish always was about live music, and merging together all sorts of musics. That seems to be what Bonnaroo is about.

Sure Phish was influenced by the Grateful Dead. They also had Jay-Z sit in. Music is a big umbrella. You don't have to personally embrace it all but drawing lines in the sand is, well, close-minded.

by "different" I mean at least two things:

to let go of a lot of the old catalogue in favour of new(er) stuff, for better or for worse. I couldn't get excited about the prospect of "nostalgia Phish" in 2009 anymore than I could after Miami for New Years 2003.

secondly, to do things like...... I dunno, play Bonnaroo?!?

create new paradigms. a new normal.

I think MoMack is referring Bob Lefsetz's e-mail newsletter - presented in its entirety by brother "hamilton" above.

Lefsetz thinks Phish shouldn't play Bonnaroo because their reputation has been built on doing things independently. As much as I love Bob, I'd remind him that Phish enjoyed a major label record deal for most of their career and - apart from Bonnaroo - will probably spend most of the rest of Summer '09 playing corporate sheds, as they have for a decade at least. Further, I'd remind him that Bonnaroo is the child of Phish festivals (Limestone, Oswego, Cypress, etc) both in philosophy and in actual execution (personnel). Therefore, there is no contradiction in Phish playing Bonnaroo. It's a no brainer, as much of a homecoming as anything really radical. If fucking Widespread Panic can headline two nights there, Phish should just headline all three nights and seal the deal.

Love Lefsetz, not with him on this one. Phish v.3 BETTER be different from all sorts of perspectives, otherwise I'll be really disappointed.

I can't think of a more perfect band to headline Bonnaroo than Phish.

the power going out must have been a highlight but I wouldn't know. 20 minutes into the second set, Laurie and I left this gig and drove back to Hamilton, we just coudn't take anymore of this bullshit jamband nonsense. We exited outside and laughed out loud in relief.

This was perhaps the worst music I've ever paid more than $15 to go see. Fuck the Disco Biscuits.

And I'm not just saying this to extend the bitterness but the crowd we experienced was absolutely vile too. Disgusting strung out kids.

Me, I went to Toronto night 2. It was a good show. Nothing was particularly bad, nothing was particularly great - and maybe that was the problem. Neil played it safe, save for a string of three new songs, which all passed by like markers in time. Still, at least they were curveballs, sustaining interest.

It's perplexing to me why Neil would take an A+ country band on the road and then focus on balls out Crazy Horse material. Watching Ben Keith spend half the night playing inaudible rhythym guitar was - weird. But, then again, Neil Young is weird, so no sweat.

It's never a problem being in the same room as Neil Young, but I'll call it as I see it. This was a Neil Young show that gave the people what they wanted and therefore not particularly memorable.
