  7. Themasses bringin' a little more of the West Coast vibe out East for evolve this year!!

All you evolve folk will not be diappointed.

Here's a band that exemplifies evolve's unique marriage between live bands & electronic music... Themasses are the BOMB!!

So Weez... you guys jammed with Fareed at Bonfire, does Kimock get the call at evolve? ;)

  8. Thank God we didn't ask for your dollar's worth Stephen!! ;)

I know you've been busting ass working all these angles, as very few others have, and that is abundantly clear in your knowledge of the shitstorm that is involved in touring down South.

Our High Sierra angle would be done directly through an inside contact, not just by contacting the festival producers... and even still there's obviously no guarantees, just a hope.

For 2 countries that are supposed to have free & shared trade practices, we both sure give the fuckstick to artists of all kinds who are trying to ply their trade.

It's music for Christ's sake... IMO that is something that should travel freely the world over, and most notably between Canada & the US.

Bureaucrats have no business in our business... but I guess they're afraid Stephen Franke & Noises from the Toolshed may carry some kind of 'Mad Musicians Disease' across the border, eh?

    Phuck...

  9. The bands I'll probably be pitching for this potential opportunity would be...

    Brickhouse (www.brickhousetheband.com)

    Blue Quarter (www.bluequarter.com)

    Themasses (www.themasses.ca)

    Slammin Jack (www.slamminjack.com)

    Wassabi Collective (www.wassabi.net)

Note: I'm from Vancouver, so I have my finger on the pulse of the West Coast scene far more than the East... plus these are bands I've worked with many times.

I know JSB & BNB are more than ready for High Sierra, and would fit into the Canadian showcase very well... but California is a LONG way to travel for any East Coast band.

Stephen's a possibility as well, for sure.

We'd probably look at loading everyone up into a single tour bus and making the trip South to High Sierra together... or in some sort of convoy.

It's a cool idea and would be an interesting attraction for High Sierra which, I would imagine, would be very weel supported down there (curiosity?), so I'd be inclined to go with that which I know... Western Canadian talent.

  10. Ridley kicked ass.

He had members of The Seams sitting in (www.tractorgrease.com) and they gave us a wicked little Sunday afternoon dose of the hick-hop!!

Both of those bands are on fire right now... and you can check out all sorts of great trucker & cowboy hat wearing roots grooves from BC at that above listed website!!

  11. Good points all-round folks.

I think one of the other more important things that needs to happen falls on Canadian promoters & managers such as myself... not just on the bands themselves.

When we bring up the American talent, a lot of times Canadian promoters aren't using this to their advantage and showcasing Canadian talent in support (though I myself always do this)... so there are no relationships being built up between the Canadian artists & the US bands/management/booking agents.

IMO, networking is definitely the key... not just for the Canadian bands, but for the Canadian promoters who continually book these US acts North of the border.

Building up the business contacts and relationships with our friends South of the border is HUGE to the potential growth of the Canadian scene and the future success of Canadian bands in the US.

I know that at Bonfire, Garaj Mahal & their management were extremely impressed with the Canadian talent, and the way they were treated by us. So, following up on that and continuing to build that relationship is something that falls in my hands, not necessarily the bands'.

Some of the best jams this year involved collaboration between the Canadian & Yankee bands. Fareed sitting in with Themasses & Five Alarm Funk joining in with Garaj for the Saturday late-night jam. The seeds have been sown, now they need nurturing to help them grow.

If the relationship is nurtured, than maybe there's a chance that Themasses, Slammin Jack, Brickhouse, Blue Quarter or any number of Canadian acts may be able to do a US tour in support of Garaj... or one of the other stable of artists under their management/booking agent.

Or with the managers/booking agents knowing & having relationships with the promoters up here, maybe we can have some pull in getting some of our acts onto event lineups at festivals like High Sierra & Bonnaroo. We know some of our acts are good enough to be there, we just need to stress that to our friends down South.

We will definitely be staying in contact and doing whatever is in our power to help these Canadian bands, as any success South of the border will clearly help our cause in Canada.

High Sierra kicks off on Canada Day every year... so it would be brilliant if we could talk with our friends in California and maybe have some kind of Canadian band showcase on Canada Day, eh?

With hard work, commitment & good contacts... anything is possible.

    Vive Canada!!

  12. Touring, touring, touring.

If any Canadian "jambands' really want to "make it" in this scene, the only way to do that is to play in the States... and play A LOT!

Even the Yankee jammers that have made it toured tirelessly for many years before they made any kind of blip on the radar screen.

You're looking at 200 shows a year, coast-to-coast North, South, East & West... festivals, opening slots, empty rooms, starving, homesick & broke.

Making it in any music scene is all about hard work, sacrifice, persistence... and even then you need a bit of luck too.

In the "jamband" community, it's even more so.

All the bands that are on the top of their game & the scene right now definitely put in the work... just look at how many years, shows and road miles bands like String Cheese, Sound Tribe, moe., Umphrey's & Steve Kimock have worked their asses off.

If Canadian bands really want to succeed, they'll bite the bullet, do the research, get their paperwork in order, fork over the fees and get their asses down South for extended tours criss-crossing the country that really counts in the world of music.

Also... hooking up networks with some of the current American jambands/supporters never hurt either.

I heard a rumour that Stephen Franke may be touring the States with Vorcza Trio in the Fall... so there's one Canadian act that did their homework and are willing to risk taking the plunge.

It's commitment, sacrifice & a serious work ethic... which I'm not sure many of our Canadian acts have... but I love them & their music nonetheless and will continue doing what I can to help them grow.

We have the talent for sure... there just seems to be a little too much apathy towards our bands on the whole, and weak support of live music & live musicians in our country.

    Too bad, eh?

  13. Hello everybody.

I just wanted to pass along a HUGE thank you to everyone that made this inaugural year of Bonfire a most memorable experience.

We're still working away at wrapping things up, and I had to thank all the fans, bands, volunteers, staff... everyone that made this event come together.

I can't even begin to try listing ALL the things that supercharged my spirit this weekend... but I do have a few things that certainly stood out.

    - Five Alarm Funk cruising through the campsite with a megaphone calling everyone out for their Friday night set

    - Themasses with Fareed... say no more.

    - Friday night's fire ceremony in the rain and all the people steam drying their wet clothes!

    - Garaj Mahal playing two, 2 hour sets in the HEAVY rain on Friday night... ending at 3:30 AM with just as many folks partying then as there was at midnight

    - Everything all day Saturday as the crowds start to pour in... incredible set after incredible set with Blue Island Trio, Duran Duran Duran, Grames Brothers, Slow Nerve Action, Stephen Franke

    - Kindvibes' mouth harp solo into my radio being aired across the grounds

    - Blue Quarter's set... WOW! Double bass playing jam action with Olivier & Stephane, Bitou's drum solo!!!!! and that tripped out shit they ended their set with... mind blowing

    - Slammin Jack's set from start to finish and the SUPER extended version of 'Lucy'. "Holy Crap!! That was 90 minutes?!!!"

    - Saturday's fire ceremony to '2001' and hooking Kindvibes up with a beautiful Larrivee guitar!

    - Garaj's MONSTER set on Saturday night and the late-night jam with Garaj MaFive Alarm Funk (among others... Slippy!!) that went till 5 AM!!!!!

    - The surprise Acoustic Mayhem set for breakfast on Sunday... was there anyone with an acoustic instrument there that didn't sit in?

    - Dark Star's set with a China>Rider & a Scarlet>Fire

    - Brickhouse closing out the festival jamming with Slammin's Rich & Jeffrey (plus Slippy again too... I think the Slipster takes the band slut award for the weekend!). That Brickhouse Sunday night closing set was the icing on the cake... so sweet!

    - The Spirit of the Rainforest Amphitheatre... my new favourite venue ANYWHERE!!

... and of course all the good friends, new friends, old friends, comical moments, big smiles, hula hoopers... I really couldn't have asked for it to go off any better.

That was a truly magical weekend... and there will DEFINITELY be another Bonfire Music Festival in 2006!!!

Thank you all... we love you and we will see you soon!

    Peace.

    Keither
