  1. Well, I thought I'd post this up here for any folks who may be looking for a little "Crabgrass" for their NYE celebration.

The Ramblers have been giging throughout Toronto for the past several months and they'll be hosting a little NYE celebration at The Duke of York on Prince Arthur @ Bedford in the basement at the Original Pub. The Ramblers will have special guests stopping by from local Toronto acts like Ultra Magnus...you may even see someone from WCO there...

So if you feel like a little Bluegrass/Country/Gospel stew to bring you into the New Year, make your way to The Duke of York for about 10pm, NYE. No Cover.

    May The Blessings Be,

    Gawpo Giggles :D:D:D

  2. My band does a few Townes tunes...I'm right with Steve Earle in my opinion of Townes as a great (THE GREATEST) songwriter in Americana...and "Be Here To Love Me" will really let people know what sort of tormented and beautiful man Townes was...it was all for the music for Townes...

And, that would be none other than Marty Stewart on the Mando...

  3. Good luck Cully! Avenue Roofers took...Uuummmm...oh about 8months (that shit is NOT a typo) to get my wee, tiny roof done at my appartment. We tried to have other people come in and they were shit...all shit...and SUPER expensive. I did roofing for a number of years with my uncle in the Ottawa Valley and our prices were no where near this Toronto shit...ouch....

    Anyways, Best O' Luck Cully,

    Gawpo Giggles :P:P:P

  4. I've watched the front, back and centre! Your right, you could watch the first and third and get that whole story no problem. Makes me really appreciate the writing as one has sooooo much to be involved in...second season is sorta like an amazing break from the main theme of all of Avon's shit. And Omar is UNREAL. My favourite character for sure! The shit when the fuck up trying to take him out and get his Granny's hat...and Avon knowing the rules and letting everything take place that need to. Thug Love...

  5. So last night was the Halloween extravaganza with Kevin Breit and The Sister's Euclid @ The Orbit Room. It also marked the 10yr anniversary of the beloved Sister playing at The Orbit.

As always, Kevin and Crew were otherworldly! He simply is the finest guitar player the world has to offer and I am so greatful I get the chance to see him so often. He even took the time to tip the hat to those of us who have been making the trip to see him for some years...getting us up "on stage" to say thanks.

    Much Love Kevin,

    GG :D:D:D

  6. I've been watching this show for some time now and IT IS THE FUCKING SHIT!!! Deadwood and The Wire are the most balls out, hardcore, kick shit shows that tele has aired. Luke you Silly Fuck, you should have started from the beginning! The story is so fucking good all the way through and the climax in season 3 (Avon & Skinner climax) is crazy!!!

    Watch this show Y'all

    GG

  7. Hey folks, just wondering if anyone has any spare tix for the Ratdog Buffalo show at the end of the month? A good buddy of mine JUST asked me yesterday if I could look into it and I thought I'd check with my dear skankolicious friends. He's looking for three, but two would be amazing too.

If anyonme can help me out, please reply to this A.S.A.P

    Cheers,

    Gawpo Giggles :D:D:D

  11. I was there too...front row...I'll have some pics up soon (next day or so...)...and I got lots!!!

The show was nuts...this Trapp cat is really, REALLY slick...I shot out front before the show and got talking to me buddy; Kevin Breit...oh GOD, the thought of Kev and Jerry ripping slide style on something like "she makes me want to sing" was just killing me...but alas, instead we got this mystery Trapp kid who was also phenominal...and the rest of the band too!!!

    Great Night!!!

    May The Blessings Be,

  12. Don't know if theres been anything posted yet about his passing...Toure was a great musician and I will miss his sweet Mali-Blues greatly...His Album with Ry Cooder - "Talking Timbuktu" is a staple for me...

BAMAKO, Mali - Grieving friends and relatives buried African musical legend Ali Farka Toure Thursday in the two-time Grammy winner’s hometown on the edge of the Sahara Desert, participants said.

Toure’s body was borne on a government-supplied truck to his hometown of Niafunke after heavy sandstorms across West Africa grounded the plane meant to bring him to the Timbuktu region just south of the Sahara.

Toure melded traditional Malian stringed instruments and vocals with the American blues guitar tradition he considered firmly rooted in West Africa, from where most North American slaves were shipped.

Best known overseas for his 1994 collaboration with American guitarist Ry Cooder on “Talking Timbuktu,†which netted him his first Grammy, Toure was a local giant who helped bankroll a production company that has nurtured Mali’s young talent.

Toure, in his late 60s, won his second Grammy this year in the traditional world music album category for “In the Heart of the Moon,†performed with fellow Malian Toumani Diabate.

Toure died early Tuesday at his home in the capital, Bamako, of bone cancer.

He was born in 1939 in the northern Sahara Desert trading post of Timbuktu. Like many Africans of his generation, the exact date of his birth was not recorded.

He learned the traditional single-stringed gurkel at an early age, later taking up the guitar. He cited many Western musicians as inspiration, including Ray Charles, Otis Redding and John Lee Hooker.

Toure spent many of his later years in Niafunke, near Timbuktu, which has become a pilgrimage site for many music-loving Africans and tourists seeking one of the originators of a genre that has become known as Mali Blues.

  13. Buy it! Crafter is the most distinguished(?) guitar manufacturer in Korea and they make a fine instrument...I am quite familiar with their line, but not of the model you mentioned...I would however guess that it would be of a mahogany (M) back & sides, dreadnaught (D) body style and for $75 I would maybe say a solid top, likely the engleman spruce they are accustomed to using. It may not be a solid top, but still easily worth the $75 US. Kim Breedlove of Breedlove guitars (and other well respected, boutique U.S guitar companies) has chosen Crafter as the company to produce their Atlas series...I know this because I am a Breedlove dealer.

    Happy pickin'

  14. Just wondering who might be in attendance for this show....

This evening will be a celebration of Mr. Coleman's 75 years in life. I will be front row centre for this with my friend Harvey Cowan, a former band mate(violinist)of Mr. Colman's. I have been told that Mr. Coleman is composing a piece of work that will be performed at this event only, for the special celebration.

I am so excited about this, I'm hardly able to contain myslef. Through a series of fortunate events, Mr. Cowan approached me to build him a 6-string electric violin...earlier this week he called to invite me to this show...I hope some other skanks can make it to this once in a lifetime event...

    May the blessings be,

  15. Hi Ad,

Here at my store, the most moderatly priced out-fit (cello, gig-bag, bow) is $1299+tax new. They are made in Korea and properly set-up. Being here in Toronto as well as being Remenyi, may even put the price a little high, so possibly look into paying $1000-$1300 for a Chinese or Korean. Korean made is better, but if properly set-up, Chinese instruments are OK too.

    Hope that helps...

    May the blessings be,

    Gawpo Giggles :P:P:P

  16. Hey AD,

Working for a music shop that specializes in violin family instruments (being world renound for it) as well as being a luthier doing the set-ups for such instruments, I would say be thankful that you arn't able to get one of these "musiciansfriend.com" cello's! Aside from being the cheapest quality Chinese made instrument, they are not set-up what-so-ever. And trust me, setting-up a stringed instrument is both costly and difficult...not simple like a guitar or bass guitar. There are several aspects to the acoustic vln/vla/cello/bass that must be taken into consideration to do a proper set-up and for a cello, your looking at about $400...a violin set-up at my store is $275+tax.

Be weary...trust a store with a good reputation and stay the hell away from L&M...some of the saddest work I've seen on a violin family instrument in my life has been from the L&M here in Toronto...

    May the blessings be,

    Gawpo Giggles :P:P:P

  17. The Ibaez guitars of the mid 70's to the early 80's were absolutly destroying virtually anything coming out in the US at the time...and with MUCH better pricing. Truely handmade guitars with much more care for detail and attention than the Gibson's and Fender's that by that time were only name sakes to what sort of time and effort was originally put behind their name...

There is a reason why Bob Weir and Jerry Garcia both had their hand at helping design guitars for Ibanez...Bob, of course designing the Weir Artist and lesser know fact, Garcia help design the Musician...

$6000+ is one bitch of a price tag though, but I doubt their'll be any left 6 months after the release...I think 6 months is even stretching it...

    May the blessings be,

    Gawpo Giggles

  18. Hey kids, BSS and others will be playing for free as part of the Toronto Street festival. I could give a shit about the rest, but BSS WOOOOHOOOOOOOO

    Location: DUNDAS SQUARE

    Times for BSS: 10PM

    Gawpo Giggles :):):)

-should be noted that the beautiful ladies will be absent...Leslie' on tour, Metric too and same with the stars...

  19. Thanks Jay for the feedback...the Montreal gig isn't actually 'till the second week of Aug so maybe I'll see about that. I spoke with Adam first 'cause I thought Ottawa would really enjoy the fury that is UM...Adam suggested the 27th of this month...I then got a hold of a friend booking in Montreal who has ties with the WMF and he gave me a bunch of dates for UM and was SUPERSTOKED...but the festival is in August so...I was trying to see if this show on the 27th would still be worth it for the band...working backwards to try and please a bunch of people...

NNNNNNNNNNEEEEEWAAAYYYYY, thanks for the insight and I'll see whats up with the band...it's also REALLY hard to get a band of 10 plus members (some with jobs, some whose job is being in 4 or 5 different bands) together for a little run...almost had it worked out...

    Gawpo Giggles :P:P:P

  20. the email i got from the band last week didnt even have dates in it, despite billing this band as great stuff.

i didnt get a reply when i wrote back asking about that, but i aint bitter.

I don't know who sent you that, and I didn't recieve your email...Magnus has been asked to refrain from his duties with bookings as he's too busy with all his work in music...the dates are sent out to people who make it to the shows and sign email lists...other shows are listed on the website...

plus, the phrasing "real afrobeat", is kind of a drag to read when mr somethingsomething do a great job at what they do, and publcize what they do so that people can actually go and see em.

    .02

A few years back I was the guy that was helping out Canned Beats with shows at an establishment in London...an establishment that housed Mr. SomethingSomething...I have been a serious fan of Afrobeat music for YEARS...probably as long as I've been listening to "jamband" music...I've also been involved in the social awarness that the originator Fela Kuti was involved in, although my close involvment came as my relationship with animal rights issues and what arose from that (all types of injustice throughout Africa)...I didn't mention anything in regards to Mr. SomethingSomething althoug I find it funny you would take "real Afrobeat" as a poke at them...YES, there is a reason I referred to UM as the "real Afrobeat" and it may be more than Magnus' study of the art of Afrobeat, his work with founding members of the Afrobeat movment and the entire message UM presents with their high energy Afrobeat...

I see you almost every Monday night and I don't recall hearing where UM is playing in T-Dot
COPer, I mentioned to you my Bday show (this entire board as well) and another future date as well...your a busy guy COPer...what can I say?

I put this up to see if any of these people I've known for years would into something like this...35 views and not 1 reply...no "sounds good", "too busy", no nothin'...I dunno, take em some place where the crowd will appreciate them and it would be worth their while to go...Montreal for the WMF I guess...

and a question was raised as to why some hard working Canadian bands can't do anything but play a few shows here and there throughout their local area (and not break into the U.S)...sh!t local support was it?!?!?!

maybe harsh, but if the shoe fits...summer smummer...
